Download or read book Copper King in Central Africa written by Hyden Munene and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper King in Central Africa offers a detailed account of the corporate history of the Rhokana/Rokana Corporation and its Nkana mine. Thematically and chronologically organised, it explores the discovery of viable ores on the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian Copperbelt in the late 1920s, which attracted foreign capital from South Africa, Britain and the USA, prompting the development of the Nkana mine and the formation of the Rhokana Corporation in the early 1930s. It follows through the evolution of the copper mining industry up to the re-privatisation of the Zambian mining sector in 1991. The book ties into a single narrative the disparate themes of corporate organisation, labour relations, and profitability of Rhokana, demonstrating how the firm was, for a time, the most important mining entity in the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian mining industry. Rhokana was both an investment firm on the Copperbelt and a mining company through Nkana mine. Thus, the Corporation was central to the development and profitability of the copper industry in Zambia. Its corporate and labour policies influenced the Copperbelt as a whole. Employing the largest labour force in the mining sector, Rhokana spearheaded the labour movement on the Copperbelt. Its Nkana mine was also the largest producer of copper in the Northern Rhodesian mining industry between 1940 and 1953, and contributed hugely to the war economies of Britain and the USA. Throughout its history, Nkana was also a major source of cobalt. After nationalisation of the mining sector in 1970, Rhokana surrendered its investments in the wider copper industry, but remained central to the Copperbelt’s smelting and refining operations, owning the biggest metallurgical facilities in the industry.

Book excerpt: SAFEGUARDING THE ENVIRONMENT IN MINING DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS Safeguarding the Environment in Mining Development gives a description of the role the extractive industry plays in the economic sector of most developing countries. It also describes the activities of Transnational Corporations (TNCs) in this sector. Topics explored include the impacts on the economy, employment generation, technology transfer and environmental damages as a result of poor mitigation measures to address externalities as a result of improper effluent disposal. This Manuel (Book) further indicates that TNCs must come to realize that environmental regulations should not only become a payment part of the business climate of industrialized countries, but must also be a part of the developing countries and that in the long run cooperation is more productive than opposition. The Author, a Professor of Geological and Environmental Sciences, also emphasizes that cooperative or bilateral efforts by both TNCs and governments of developing countries are absolutely necessary for the effectiveness of safeguarding the environment. Download or read book Education to Address Negative Impacts of Copper Copper Mining written by Lillian Chipatu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the resultant negative impacts on the environment, the mining industry in Zambia is the economic blood of the country. It offers a source of foreign exchange earnings and an important source of income for people. Negative impacts of copper mining are aggravated by lack of environmental awareness among the local community, especially among adults with low literacy levels. Scavenging in the mine dumpsites by the local people is common and the polluted streams and rivers that are known to be the main recipients of mine effluent continue to be utilized by subsistence anglers. The results are poor health conditions on both the local people and the physical environment .Environmental Education could help them to become aware of the impacts of mining, avoid negative impacts of mining activities and to take better care of their environment. This book is useful to researchers, mining industry, policy makers, educators and personnel in non-governmental organisation
