Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christology is crazy. Its rather absurd to identify a first-century homeless Jew as God revealed, but a bunch of us do anyway. In this book, Tripp Fuller examines the historical Jesus, the development of the doctrine of Christ, the questions that drove christological innovations through church history, contemporary constructive proposals, and the predicament of belief for the church today. Recognizing that the battle over Jesus is no longer a public debate between the skeptic and believer but an internal struggle in the heart of many disciples, he argues that we continue to make christological claims about more than an event or simply the Jesus of history. On the other hand, C. S. Lewiss infamous liar, lunatic, and Lord scheme is no longer intellectually tenable. This may be a guide to Jesus, but for Christians, Fuller is guiding us toward a deeper understanding of God. He thinks its good newsgood news about a God who is so invested in the world that God refuses to be God without us.

And Bible students at all levels will appreciate his sparkling interpretations. This selection is from Gundry's Commentary on the New Testament.

Book excerpt: Are you tired of living a defeated Christian life? Are you sick of trying to overcome the same things as if they are stronger than your God? Well, I have good news. You don't have to be what you are, Christ died to make us free from the law of sin and death. So many believers live beneath their privilege simply because they have not come into the full knowledge of what Christ did at Calvary. They go to church week in and week out hoping for some hocus pocus action from the pulpit or during the praise service that will catapult them from one dimension to another. More often times than not they leave inspired, but not motivated to attack their lives with Godly fervor. We are told to live holy but how. "Why Praise" is an attempt at that process. We are free! Alvin J. Summers is the proud Pastor of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Martin, TN where he has served for eleven years. A man after God's own heart, he encourages all to "love God in honesty and integrity." Alvin has a B.M.E. from Henderson State University and a M.Div. from Memphis Theological Seminary. Alvin's quiet humility gives way when he is given the opportunity to share the Gospel. "I am unashamedly Christian," he declares. "Gods been good to me and I am not ashamed to tell the story" is his personal testimony. He and his wife Colleen have been married for 18 years and have two children. But most of all, he has taken upon himself the responsibility of studying to show himself approved unto God a workman that needs not to be ashamed, but one that tries to rightly divide the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is God's description of His creation from the beginning of time to the end of time. Amid all the pages, of wonder and mystery, are people like you and me. AIM to Be Like Jesus describes the thread God has woven around human lives""a thread by which He calls out to mankind. His words are simply, "Here I am! I stand by the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20). While writing the book The BE Attitudes for Christians, I very clearly observed the many characters, whose lives God has given us as examples. It was these characters who inspired me to write my next book, AIM to Be Like Jesus. There were many characters I could have chosen, but I chose people who, in my opinion, portrayed a unique quality. These Bible characters have human attitudes that they purposely chose to use for God. This book begins with Abel, who was considered righteous because of his pleasing sacrifice to God. It ends with Jesus, who was righteous, perfect, and was used as the final sinless sacrifice for mankind. The acronym "AIM" is to help the reader focus on: the attitude to be developed, instruction about the characters, and meditation on Scripture about the characters. When characters in the Bible come alive, I often wonder, "Could I be like that?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to combine Christian and queer-affirming attitudes in a counseling context? This book provides concrete case studies to show that it is indeed possible and shows how this connection can be touching and liberating. Kerstin Söderblom explains the meaning of queer-affirming pastoral care, using narrative miniatures of counseling sessions. The basis for this is the evaluation of case studies from pastoral care and casual services. Moreover, it presents queer-friendly impulses for pastoral care sermons, queer "re-readings" of biblical texts, prayers and rituals. The book shares exciting and touching stories from a pastoral-theological world that is usually still completely ignored. It combines professional pastoral care work with the question of how it can be offered to queer people in an appropriate and respectful way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary opportunity to understand the vision of Pope Francis Pope Francis is a first in many ways: the first pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit, the first Francis, the first child of immigrants from the Old World, nurtured and transformed by the New World, and returned to lead the whole world. His eloquent homilies and speeches have inspired the faithful of Argentina for decades, largely through his gift of oratory, tracing back to his time as a bishop, archbishop, and cardinal in his home country. Published in English for the first time in their entirety and with contextual annotations, In Your Eyes I See My Words, Volume 1 collects his homilies and speeches from 1999 to 2004. Volume 2 spans from 2005 to 2008, and Volume 3, from 2009 to 2013, concludes with his prophetic last homily before his election to the papacy. This illuminating collection presents an extraordinary opportunity to understand the vision of a great pastor. His words bear witness to the deep experience of faith among God’s people while also showcasing his own extraordinary ability to connect with communities of faith. Through these homilies and speeches, Pope Francis humbly displays his abilities as a wordsmith, a patient and attentive teacher, an inspired and faithful theologian, and a sensitive pastor uniquely attuned to his people, offering ready guidance for their journeys, but also journeying with them. The first of a three-volume translation of Pope Francis’s theological, pastoral, anthropological, and educational thought provides rich insights into the mind and theological unfolding of a spiritual leader who has become beloved all across the globe. Within it we see Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio—later Pope Francis—ministering to the needs of the people while also engaging with the political, technological, and societal forces affecting their daily lives. Here is an ecclesial voice not afraid to challenge the politicians, the culture-makers, and media moguls—even his own ordained and lay church ministers—to live a life of faithfulness marked by justice, equality, and concern for the needs of everyone, urging all to rely on the “vitality of memory” and the “recovery of hope.” In Your Eyes I See My Words also provides a glimpse into the political, social, and religious environment of Argentina and Latin America, providing a unique perspective on the issues confronting the faithful and how those issues motivated and nurtured Pope Francis’s understanding of the Church’s mission to all segments of society—particularly to those underrepresented and on the margins of history.
