Book excerpt: Ally Lane is the pilot and navigator of the The Betty Loo, a search and rescue submarine. She took refuge from her demons on the sub a decade ago. Brian Kingston, a captain with good intentions but a heavy drinking problem, jumps at the opportunity to make more money than he can imagine on a deep-sea dive aboard the search and rescue submarine, The Betty Loo. He quickly discovers just what he’s gotten himself, and his crew, into. The Betty Loo will be going to suicidal depths on a mission to rescue The Peacemaker, a sub once thought to be unsinkable. After receiving an anonymous threat on the day of departure, Brian is left with no choice but to continue on the mission. But the depths of the sea aren’t the only problems ahead. New crewmembers arrive, and seeds of distrust are sown within hours. And, upon arrival to The Peacemaker, he realizes that though not all the bodies are dead, there is no one to rescue. The crewmembers, both old and new, have to trust one another and fight for their lives against the adapting undead or join them in the floating graveyard that is The Peacemaker.

Book excerpt: Ally Lane survived the sinking of the Betty Loo, escaped imprisonment, and averted an all-out war between the nations that would have destroyed the world. Now she is faced with her greatest challenge. She must cross the country, avoiding hordes of the undead and groups of people willing to do anything to survive. While she travels with a rag tag group of survivors and new additions, the reality of their situation hits home. There are worse things out there than the zombies, and she can only think of one solution for them to live. After a close encounter with a maniac convinced the zombies can be tamed and made into a new breed of soldier, Ally implements her plan. With only a handful of people left from her group, they make the trek to the coast where they find the rusting metal hulks of what used to be grand floating cities. When they board them, they discover they are not alone. Forced to make a choice between the lives of those she cares about or death, she does the only thing she can. Ally forges a shaky alliance with a man she doesn’t trust, but it will get her one step closer to her goal. The voyage is filled with peril and danger, but they reach their destination. Midway Island. Soon after, they discover there is something deadlier than zombies. As their time ticks away, Ally's strength, determination, and will are tested.

Book excerpt: Firm leaders are dying, being taken out by an unknown enemy. The epidemic created by greedy corporations has grown out of control and the world is now a zombie utopia. Ally Lane wakes up aboard a cargo ship dazed and confused. She has survived the explosion of the Betty Loo only to discover she's in more danger than ever. The captain has a hold full of zombies and the doctor on board is out for himself. The reality of what is happening hits her when she sees a map of the infected areas. Armed with the truth, Ally must find a way to let as many people know what is really going on. She runs into a snag when the captain betrays her, turning her over to an enemy from a past she'd rather not remember. Mark Richards, the man responsible for who she is, takes her to his compound. She ignores his attempts at talking, the anger inside bubbling over when she realizes he is the one responsible for the death of all her friends and her fiancé, Marcus, on the Betty Loo. She fights her way free, only to find herself in the middle of hell. Charlie Myers, a former friend turned enemy from her past shows up and with the help of him and his men they escape. Ally doesn’t know who to trust, but has to play the game long enough to stay alive, figure out what's happening, and get a message out to those left. Joseph Erdman is the head of the Israeli Firm, but abandons his post when the undead close in. He heads for America and the one person who can help him, Ally. In a remote location, several forces collide and Ally must side with former enemies and turn her back on friends in order to save what's left of the world. Joseph has a plan, but he doesn’t share all of the details. While Ally and a team of mercenaries try to get him to the Old House so he can claim the Presidency and give people guidance in the time of crisis, another foe is heading directly for them. Ally finds the Old House and another structure where men in uniforms are taking a stand. Joseph has gone missing and her opportunities to broadcast the truth are gone. She knows nuclear weapons were part of the plan and decides to get to them first.

Book excerpt: “A well-written yet concise history” of Hitler’s plan to build a massive naval fleet, why it failed, and how it may have affected the outcome of WWII (Nautical Research Journal). Except for the strength of the U-boat fleet at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic, the German Navy, or Kriegsmarine, was never a match for the Royal Navy, even though the latter was overstretched and fighting in the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Arctic. It was not supposed to be that way. Hitler and his naval staff had a vision for a large and well-balanced fleet, including aircraft carriers. Plan Z was the name given for the massive fleet that Germany intended to build. However, the Plan relied on the outbreak of the war not occurring until at least 1942. This book examines the way in which such a fleet could have influenced the major battles between the Royal Navy and the Germans. Plan Z starts by looking at Germany’s history and ambitions as a maritime power. The relationships among the three armed forces, and between them and the Fuhrer, are also examined, along with the country’s economic and industrial position. Thanks to the author’s detailed research, Plan Z considers whether the Nazis’ ambitions could ever have been realized even if the war had been delayed due to the resource and manpower limitations—and also considers what the Royal Navy’s response could have been. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book with no practical purpose whatsoever. As any fan of Dave's would probably guess, a book by him won't make you a better sailor, and it won't provide any instruction on boat maintenance. But it will entertain – his light but observational writings tap the rich well of all those things that sailors know but few dare admit. The Impractical Boat Owner is a collection of Dave's columns for Practical Boat Owner magazine, expanded for the book, and with additional 'Lessons Not Learned' hints and tips boxes, all accompanied by Jake Kavangh's wonderful cartoons. Taking us from Dave's first flounderings afloat to more recent, er, flounderings afloat, themes covered include: - first attempts at sailing - how not to sail singlehanded - mysteries of maintenance - how not to sail with a dog - the impenetrable mysteries of navigation and weather - how not to race The Impractical Boatowner is an antidote to all that's written about expensive shiny new yachts, self-improvement, the quest for qualifications and practical skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No weapon platform sank more U-boats in the Second World War than the Allied aircraft. Whether it was an American ’plane operating from American escort carriers, US aircraft from Royal Air Force bases, or British aircraft from bases throughout the world, these officers and men became the most decisive factor in turning the tide of the Battle of the Atlantic against the German submarine threat. While the German crews could threaten escort vessels with torpedoes, or avoid them by remaining submerged, their leaders never developed an effective strategy against aircraft. However, the Allied aircraft did not enjoy much early success. British, Canadian and Australian air crews that fought the U-boats from 1939 until 1941 achieved few triumphs. They possessed neither the aircraft nor the bases necessary to deliver consistent lethal attacks against German submarines. In 1941, the Royal Air Force finally began implementing an effective aircraft response when it initiated training on the American-built Consolidated B-24 Liberators. Supported by other types then in service, these four-engine bombers would prove to be decisive. With America’s entry into the war, the United States Navy and the United States Army Air Forces also began employing Liberators against the U-boats so that by mid-1943, the Admiral Karl Dönitz, commander of U-boat forces, withdrew his submarines from the North Atlantic in recognition of the Allied aircraft’s new dominance. From Dönitz’s retreat to the end of the war, Allied aircraft continued to dominate the U-boat battle as it shifted to other areas including the Bay of Biscay. Dönitz eventually ordered his U-boats to remain on the surface and engage Allied aircraft as opposed to submerging. This approach did lead to the demise of some Allied aircraft, but it also resulted in even more U-boat being sunk. Most critically, Dönitz acknowledged with his new policy that he knew of no tactics or weapons that would defend his submarines from Allied aircraft. In the end, it was a matter of choosing whether his submariners would die submerged or die surfaced. Either way, Allied aircraft prevailed. The Allied Air Campaign Against Hitler’s U-Boats is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of this most crucial battle which helped turn the Battle of the Atlantic irrevocably in favour of the Allies.
