Book Synopsis Canada's Changing North by : William C. Wonders
Download or read book Canada's Changing North written by William C. Wonders and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Canada's Changing North was first published in 1971, it quickly became a popular and reliable overview of the geography and culture of the Canadian North. In the three decades since it first appeared, great changes have occurred in this huge region that makes up two thirds of Canada's total area. This revised and expanded edition provides a new generation with a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the Canadian North and outlines how this region has become increasingly integrated into both the Canadian national fabric and the world.Among the many recent developments explored in Canada's Changing North is the legal recognition of aboriginal rights by the Canadian state, which has led directly to significant increases in their political and economic power. It also examines how economic development, which has long focused on non-renewable natural resources, particularly minerals, has grown to an enormous scale. Development of arctic oil and gas, which hinges on world supplies and national and international politics, has meant major changes across the North. Some of the new national parks in the Canadian North are already under threat from mineral development. Northern tourism has made it possible for a wide variety of affluent visitors to visit hitherto remote areas, affecting the ecology. The final selection, on northern challenges, discusses critical issues such as the impact of climatic change, the social needs (e.g. housing, education) of a rapidly increasing aboriginal population, environmental protection of unique regions, and defence of Arctic sovereignty. Of the sixty-two readings in this edition, forty-one are new.

Book excerpt: An examination of how America can strengthen its approach to China by building on its existing advantages “This book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding how the United States can renew its advantages in its competition with China.”—Ambassador Susan E. Rice, former U.S. National Security Advisor “Ryan Hass has provided an indispensable and timely contribution to understanding our critical path forward with China.”—Jon M. Huntsman, former U.S. Ambassador to China and Russia Ryan Hass charts a path forward in America’s relationship and rivalry with China, a path rooted in the relative advantages America already possesses. Hass argues that while competition will remain the defining trait of the relationship, both countries will continue to be impacted—for good or ill—by their capacity to coordinate on common challenges that neither can solve on its own, such as pandemic disease, global economic development, climate change, and nuclear nonproliferation. Hass makes the case that the United States will have greater success in outpacing China economically and outshining it in questions of governance if it focuses more on improving its condition at home than on trying to impede Chinese initiatives. He argues that the task at hand is not to stand in China’s way and, in the process, turn a rising power into an enemy but to renew America’s advantages in its competition with China.

Download or read book East Asian Visions written by Indermit Singh Gill and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the diversity in income levels, languages, culture, resource endowments, and political systems, the countries of East Asia are more integrated now than they have ever been. Goods, money, and ideas are being traded across the region. East Asia is redefining itself from a collection of disparate nations that looked mainly to markets in the west, to a more self-reliant, innovative, and networked region. Countries in this region are strengthening ties with each other and seeking more strategic partnerships with the rest of the world. 'East Asian Visions' is a collection of essays that convey, firsthand, how some of the most influential thinkers in East Asia view these challenges. The writers are eminent policy makers, statesmen, and scholars. They write about how competition with the west has bred success; how crises in the region have provoked introspection; and how the rise of China is catalyzing change.

Book Synopsis Arctic Tourism in Times of Change:: Dimensions of Urban Tourism by : Müller, Dieter K.
Download or read book Arctic Tourism in Times of Change:: Dimensions of Urban Tourism written by Müller, Dieter K. and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2020-529/ Tourism has grown in many Arctic peripheries of northern Europe and North America, particularly among international markets interested in unique Arctic nature and culture-based assets. In this context, urban places have remained relatively neglected. The report brings together case studies from several northern peripheries to illustrate the diversity of urban Arctic tourism and to identify implications for sustainable tourism development across the North. The case studies indicate that the Arctic dimensions of urban tourism are not always self-evident and tourism has not developed in relation to the northern culture of these places. However, in a global competition for capital and people, urban places seem to be increasingly using the Arctic as a way to boost local economies and reimage their places in order to achieve individual, local, regional, and national development goals.
