Book excerpt: Though numerous studies have been conducted regarding perceived racial bias in newspaper reporting of violent crimes, few studies have focused on the intersections of race and gender in determining the extent and prominence of this coverage, and more specifically how the lack of attention to violence against women of color reinforces their invisibility in the social structure. This book provides an empirical study of media and law enforcement bias in reporting and investigating homicides of African American women compared with their white counterparts. The author discusses the symbiotic relationship between media coverage and the response from law enforcement to victims of color, particularly when these victims are reported missing and presumed to be in danger by their loved ones. Just as the media are effective in helping to increase police response, law enforcement officials reach out to news outlets to solicit help from the public in locating a missing person or solving a murder. However, a deeply troubling disparity in reporting the disappearance and homicides of female victims reflects racial inequality and institutionalized racism in the social structure that need to be addressed. It is this disparity this important study seeks to solve.

Molested as a child and subsequently forced into prostitution by her drug-addicted mother, she learned at an early age that men were not to be trusted. Being constantly preyed upon taught her to be a predator. Her target was women—straight or married. As the headliner at a local strip club, Samantha capitalizes on the gifts she was cursed with. In turn, her life quickly spirals down a dangerous path of violence, seduction, and exploitation. When Sasha is brought on as the new bartender, she becomes Samantha’s newest target. The last thing Samantha anticipated was falling in love. When tragedy strikes, what was once a challenge may prove to be her downfall. Can Samantha heal from her abusive past . . . or will she always be Wounded? “This book will keep you hoping that love will finally show up and conquer all. When you think it finally has, unseen twists will have you reeling.” —literarytitan.com

Yet she’s unwelcome with the locals and grows close to Archana, her maid, who reminds Margaret of the beloved sister she lost in the great war. Overjoyed with her pregnancy, Margaret could stay forever, sipping tea, chatting with Archana, painting in the sun beside the stream full of water lilies. But when Archana finds herself in danger and Margaret makes the choice to save her, she doesn’t realise the devastating consequences that will tear her and Archana apart, destroy her marriage, and haunt her for the rest of her life... England, 2000: Emma’s relationship is falling apart, and her beloved grandmother, Margaret, is dying. Margaret has one last request: find Archana. It’s the first time Emma has even heard the name, but desperate for an escape and to bring Margaret closure, she travels deep into the heart of the Indian hills, to a crumbling house overgrown with vines, searching for answers. The more Emma learns, the more she sees of herself in her grandmother, and the stronger her need to uncover Margaret’s secret. But if she finds Archana and the truth is finally revealed – the story of a day spent painting by a stream, and a betrayal that tore three lives to pieces – can it help each woman find peace or are some rifts too deep to heal…? Book excerpt: Come away with the perpetual wanderer on a journey through ice! In defiance of her mother, Tierahna (Tierney, if you want to stay in her good graces) runs away from the Keep. For the first time, she strikes out on a journey for self-fulfillment alone. Or else she will become a victim to her mother's machinations. Traditions, restrictions, and oh yeah, a mother stronger than gale-force winds have held her back all her life, making her greener and pricklier than thistledown. A scheme to open the borders of their isolated land is the catalyst to her meeting an exile. One who is an anathema to every rule she’s been taught and sets her on a course no one foresees. The pampered princess of the land has not had enough experience to know how to handle a foreigner who has already snaked across their border. He comes crashing into her life and deceives her in everything he does. On a harrowing trip across the lands, she picks up hangers-on and endures conflicts and other lands with agendas that can kill them, which forces her to rely on him against her better judgment—all while in a body advancing with powers that she has no control over, her family’s secrets unraveling and everything she’s ever known changing. Tierney latches on to the foreigner as the fate of her land is thrown into her hands.

Deep in the recesses of my heart the Lord said, "It's not my time." ''Not Your time? Why have I been working so hard.? Your timing?", I asked, almost irritated. The Lord answered, ''There is still much for you to walk through then you'll write. There are more trials to overcome, but I will bring you through; some good, some difficult." "What more trials? More suffering? 0 Lord, haven't I gone through enough? And my Dear husband? The good I'll take, but more suffering?" No need to argue with the Lord, He knows what He has purposed. In submitting to the Lord on His timing and will I felt His peace and knew His timing of 'my story in waiting ' would be for His glory and my victory.

Book excerpt: At the heart of The Three Lands, there is a paradise, filled with beauty and wonders of all kinds. A lush and vibrant place, it stands in sharp contrast to the baseness and squalor of the world outside the walls of Osrakum. But this beauty comes at a cost. The Masters who rule the world are driven by sadistic dreams and mythic charms. They use their vast powers to leech the resources of the world unto themselves, to create an artificial haven where they play out twisted games of power amid a decadent splendor. Within the inner circle of power lies a glittering court where the royal houses plot vile atrocities, and madness and bestiality hold sway. The Masters are nothing less than gods in this realm and their plans (or whims) can bring either perfect pleasure... or death. Young Carnelian has spent his entire life in exile with his father, a nobleman who rejected the evil ways of his people and fled to the ends of the known world. But forces conspired to change all that, and Carnelian returned to his homeland. He is a sheep among wolves, and it has taken every ounce of his strength to resist the temptations of power that threaten to seduce his very soul. What Carnelian could never have imagined was that he would fall in love with none other than Osidian, one of the twin Gods, ruler of his world--or that forces far darker than he thought possible would use him as a weapon. When the young lovers are kidnapped by the Empress Ykoriana and forced from the safety of the empire, it appears that their lives are forfeit. But Carnelian and Osidian fall into the hands of barbarians from the southern plain they call the Undersky. These raiders manage to elude the legions of the Masters, and after enduring terrible hardships, they succeed in bringing their prizes home to their tribe. Carnelian comes to realize that the world is much more bizarre than he could ever imagine, that love can sometimes blind you to things that may destroy you, that the simple things the heart can teach you will prove to be the most true.... And that he holds in his hands the potential to save or doom all of his world. The Standing Dead is the powerful sequel to Ricardo Pinto's first novel The Chosen, and it continues this unique fantasy series about power, eros, and madness...and the depths a man will go to for love. It is the second volume in The Stone Dance of the Chameleon series, and he is currently at work on the third. Ricardo Pinto resides in Edinburgh, Scotland.
