Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the emergence of the civil rights movement with black churches at its center, African American religion and progressive politics were assumed to be inextricably intertwined. In her revelatory book, Barbara Savage counters this assumption with the story of a highly diversified religious community whose debates over engagement in the struggle for racial equality were as vigorous as they were persistent. Rather than inevitable allies, black churches and political activists have been uneasy and contentious partners. From the 1920s on, some of the best African American minds—W. E. B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, Benjamin Mays, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Mary McLeod Bethune, Charles S. Johnson, and others—argued tirelessly about the churches’ responsibility in the quest for racial justice. Could they be a liberal force, or would they be a constraint on progress? There was no single, unified black church but rather many churches marked by enormous intellectual, theological, and political differences and independence. Yet, confronted by racial discrimination and poverty, churches were called upon again and again to come together as savior institutions for black communities. The tension between faith and political activism in black churches testifies to the difficult and unpredictable project of coupling religion and politics in the twentieth century. By retrieving the people, the polemics, and the power of the spiritual that animated African American political life, Savage has dramatically demonstrated the challenge to all religious institutions seeking political change in our time.

Book excerpt: This edition of House of Spirits and Whispers features a new preface from the author, photographs, and bonus material We had been instructed to enter by the back door. That's the part of the house where the old man had lived. It was where he still lived. Turns out he was watching us that day, too, silent and heavy as the air, bound to the earth and his former home.We had been instructed to enter by the back door. In 1994, Annie Wilder and her children moved into a 100-year-old house in a historic Mississippi River town. Beautiful but spooky, the house had been on the market for six months with no offers. It felt like-and proved to be-a very haunted house. Essentially the story of a remarkable old Victorian house that seems to be a threshold to the spirit world and the astral realm, House of Spirits and Whispers has a backstory of the Wilder family's relationship with the ghost of the home's previous owner, an old man named Leon. Covering a decade's worth of ghostly activity and supernatural encounters, from whispering radiators to visits and appearances from all manner of spirits and entities, this unusual story is the true account of Annie Wilder's experiences living in a haunted house.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What's wrong, Mommy?" Even a five-year-old could tell something was wrong. There she was-the same little girl I had seen years ago. She was standing at the front window of Duncan's nursery, holding the rag doll from the old toy box in the attic, silently saying, "It's me, it's me..." A true ghost story that will give you chills and warm your heart In 1971, Kathleen McConnell and her family moved into a historic home known as the Fontaine Manse. Two days after moving in, she and her husband had an extraordinary experience that left them with no doubt that unseen residents occupied the house, too. This is the true story of how Kathleen McConnell came to know and care for the spirit children who lived in the attic of the mansion-Angel Girl, Buddy, and The Baby. From playing ball with Kathleen, to saving her son Duncan from drowning, the spirit children became part of the McConnell family in ways big and small. Finally, a heart-wrenching decision triggered an unexpected and dramatic resolution to the spirit children's plight. Don't Call Them Ghosts is the inspiring story of the transcendent and lasting power of a mother's love.

The broken find hope and healing for a new beginning. But how do we trust a Spirit we struggle to know and understand? Story of the Spirit breaks down barriers of confusion and controversy by exploring his partnerships with real people in the Old Testament. Through the eyes of leaders like Moses and Gideon and lesser known heroes like Jephthah and Bezalel, we discover a Spirit who -champions second chances -emboldens the insecure -restores lost peace and purpose -transforms places of wounding into places of worship It's time to turn the page in our perception of the Holy Spirit and awaken his powerful presence in our lives. He is more than a riddle to unravel or mystery to solve. He is a Person we were always meant to know. Knowing him inspires trust. Trusting him transforms the unfolding chapters of our own story with potential made possible only in relationship with the whole of who God is--Father, Son, and Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even in small towns, restless spirits and malevolent forces walk the streets. Oscar Mendoza knows this from personal experience. Mendoza can't remember a time when he couldn't see the spirits all around him. He does remember, however, when he first became unsettled by the experience. The year was 1980, and he was only four years old. He had been warned by his parents to never go down a certain alley in their town, but Mendoza decided to ignore their warning. When he walked down the street, he saw a crooked man slithering out from under an abandoned house. Mendoza escaped from the haunting's malevolent grasp but came away from the experience respecting the intense power of spirits. Mendoza inherited his remarkable abilities from his parents, and in this collection, he includes stories about their supernatural experiences as well as his own. Mendoza's father tells a story of encountering a baby-stealing witch in his house one dark night. His mother describes a hate-filled intruder fascinated with her brother. The Book of the Dead is the first of a series on Mendoza's supernatural experiences. Readers can look forward to the next volume about the spirits he encountered later in his life.
