Download or read book Your Negro Neighbor written by Benjamin Griffith Brawley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-08-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our country is still in the midst of the greatest war in the history of mankind. Already our sons and brothers have died in Europe. While the sacrifice is great, and each day comes home more closely to us, there must be no ceasing of the conflict until victory is assured. The principles of Christ must prevail, and democracy must be given some chance in the world. Because we believe this, because we love our country, because we wish to see our country truly noble and great, I am once more asking your attention to the vital subject of the place of the Negro in our American life. We feel that we may not unreasonably ask a hearing at this time. In the war now raging we have fully done our part, if indeed any American could venture to say that he has done his part. Whether as officers or stevedores our men have borne their share of the brunt of battle. Let it not be supposed that many of them did not enter the conflict with misgiving. They could not readily forget that under our country's flag crimes unspeakable had been committed against them. They could not help remembering that even as they went forth to fight, their sisters and their wives did not have the full protection of the law. They still had faith, however, in the great heart of the American people; and they could not believe that when the nation's finest manhood was being given for the principles of democracy and Christianity, deliberate injustice would indefinitely be tolerated.

Download or read book Oreo written by Fran Ross and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.
Book Synopsis My Neighbor Raymond, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) by : Paul De Kock
Download or read book My Neighbor Raymond, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) written by Paul De Kock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Neighbor Raymond, Vol. 1 Why don't you take care, monsieur? - you are very awkward, said a low, sweet voice, which anger even had not deprived of its charm. I have always had a weakness for agreeable voices, and quickly descending from the ethereal regions, whither I had mounted only for lack of something better to do, I looked at the person who had addressed me. It was a young girl of from sixteen to eighteen years of age, who was attired in a little cap tied under the chin and a neat gown of cotton print, as well as a modest apron of black bombazine - all of which gave her the appearance of a little working girl who was coming from her day's work and returning home. Quickly I looked at her face; my word, it was charming eyes lively and mischievous, a small nose, beauti ful teeth, black hair, an agreeable expression of countenance and a certain grace of bearing. I must confess that I had seen nothing so charming in the moon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Not in My Neighborhood by : Antero Pietila
Download or read book Not in My Neighborhood written by Antero Pietila and published by Ivan R. Dee Publisher. This book was released on 2010 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baltimore is the setting for (and typifies) one of the most penetrating examinations of bigotry and residential segregation ever published in the United States. Antero Pietila shows how continued discrimination practices toward African Americans and Jews have shaped the cities in which we now live. Eugenics, racial thinking, and white supremacist attitudes influenced even the federal government's actions toward housing in the 20th century, dooming American cities to ghettoization. This all-American tale is told through the prism of Baltimore, from its early suburbanization in the 1880s to the consequences of "white flight" after World War II, and into the first decade of the twenty-first century. The events are real, and so are the heroes and villains. Mr. Pietila's engrossing story is an eye-opening journey into city blocks and neighborhoods, shady practices, and ruthless promoters. -- Book jacket.
