Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ornamental Gardening in Florida Florida, especially the southern part of it, is really so new that we know but little as to what we can or can not do in the matter of growing ornamental plants, or making and decorating homes within its borders. The writer has had over thirteen years of experience in cultivating plants in Dade County and four in Manatee County and yet he feels that he is not competent to teach. Many things that he once supposed he had learned he has later been compelled to unlearn, and every day new problems are coming up which must be solved, problems for which the books on gardening give no help whatever. This little work is written, then, more as a set of suggestions than of instructions. I said in my paper on Dade County plants that it was a sort of first aid, and the same remark may be applied to this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida Fruits and How to Raise Them In laying the present revised and enlarged edition of "Florida Fruits and How to Raise Them" before the public, the writer gives tangible expression to the growing belief that not in the citrus fruits alone will Florida find the Alpha and Omega of her horticultural wealth. While oranges are now, and will probably continue to be, the chief staple in such sections of our great State as are best suited to their culture, there are numerous other fruits making, year by year, rapid strides to the front. A few years ago the question was, "What can be grown in Florida?" To-day the question is, "What can not be grown in Florida?" For instance, it was said that strawberries could not be raised in quantity; already, in the last three years, they have won recognition as one of the most profitable quick crops that can be raised any where. "Peaches could not be grown in Florida" was the assertion only four or five years ago, and now it has been proven that peaches can not only be grown over nearly the whole State, but grown in abundance and in perfection. The peach crop is already a very important item in the western and central sections, and yearly becoming more extended both in quantity and area. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Long's Garden Book: Spring 1930 The kind of soil, its mechanical condition and fertility, is another important matter. Here again we have to work with the material at hand, as a foundation. Unfortunately, the soil near the average] house and just where you want your finest display of posies, is the 'worst on the premises. This because much of it has been placed there in excavating for the basement of the house. But there is nothing serious about all this. I've taken the most wornout and unpromising soil and brought it up to a high state of friability, fertility and productiveness. Takes some time, work and expense, to do a good job. If top soil is too light and sandy (which is seldom the trouble) you can improve it by having some stiff or clayey soil hauled in and mixed with it. If the reverse is the case (and more often it is), then you can subdue it and make it easier to handle, in several ways. If to be had get some very fine sand, or silt, and put this on your garden 3 to 6 inches deep. Then plow or spade it under and turn it up again and keep working it over and into the native soil. The beneficial effect will last for years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Summer in a Garden Inness (the best American painter Of Nature in her moods of real human feeling) once said, NO man can do anything in art, unless he has intuitions; but, between whiles, one must work hard in collecting the materials out of which intuitions are made. The truth could not be bit off better. Knowledge is the soil, and intui tions are the flowers which grow up out of it. The soil must be well enriched and worked. It is very plain, or will be to those who read these papers, now gathered up into this book, as into a chariot for a race, that the author has long employed his eyes, his ears, and his under standing, in Observing and considering the facts Of Nature, and in weaving curious analogies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of our finest writers on one of her greatest loves. Jamaica Kincaid's first garden in Vermont was a plot in the middle of her front lawn. There, to the consternation of more experienced friends, she planted only seeds of the flowers she liked best. In My Garden (Book) she gathers all she loves about gardening and plants, and examines it generously, passionately, and with sharp, idiosyncratic discrimination. Kincaid's affections are matched in intensity only by her dislikes. She loves spring and summer but cannot bring herself to love winter, for it hides the garden. She adores the rhododendron Jane Grant, and appreciates ordinary Blue Lake string beans, but abhors the Asiatic lily. The sources of her inspiration -- seed catalogues, the gardener Gertrude Jekyll, gardens like Monet's at Giverny -- are subjected to intense scrutiny. She also examines the idea of the garden on Antigua, where she grew up. My Garden (Book) is an intimate, playful, and penetrating book on gardens, the plants that fill them, and the persons who tend them.

These first cattleyas are the classic cattleyas, whose form defined the essence of tropical orchids for generations to come. Indeed, the color of their flowers became known as "orchid." In this helpful and informative book, each classic Cattleya species is described in fascinating detail, and its role in breeding programs is elucidated. All that is required to appreciate and grow the large-flowered cattleyas successfully is included. Cultivation, humidity and watering, fertilizing, propagation, and diagnosing and treating problems are detailed, making this volume valuable for both veteran orchid enthusiasts and those who simply love these beautiful flowers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Garden in Summer The garden gave me a curious effect of the over lapping Of Spring and Summer this season in an unusually early offering of Sweet Peas, from plants raised in pots and planted out betimes, while I was still able to gather a good bunch of Daffodils, and for over a fortnight I had these unusual companions side by side on a flower table. Of course the first Sweet Peas are generally the best; on the other hand these last Daffodils were the worst Of the season, but were Of great interest to me, for they represented an experiment I had undertaken to find out what is the best way to treat bulbs from New Zea land, and how soon they can be acclimatised to our seasons and fit for the Show table.
