Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corbin's Advice, or the Wolf Hunter's Guide: Tells How to Catch 'Em and All About the Science of Wolf Hunting I have always loved nature and stuck close to her, and I will try to do it in this book. If I have read my Bible correctly, Abraham was one of the first shepherds. In Genesis we read that he was rich in cattle, in silver and in gold - something like the ranch men and stockmen of North Dakota. Indeed the pastoral life preceded every other profession. The: Patriarchs were all shepherds. Every prayer to the Lord was accompan ied by a sacrifice from the ocks and herds. When Abra ham dug a well, and there was a dispute about it, he set tied the whole thing with seven ewe lambs, and called the '3 place An Oath. Those shepherds wandered from place to place wherever there was the best pasture, just as we do in Dakota, any more than the land of Canaan was nothing to be compared with Dakota for grazing. When Jacob went a courting, he hadn't a thing but a shepherd's crook, but before he return-ed he had two wives, and ocks and herds beyond computation. Even in later times a young fellow, who was out tending a ock, was called to be King of Israel, about the only good king we ever had - that was David. He was keeping sheep that very day. He had guarded the ocks from the ravages of bear and wolf and lion, and slain them with his own hands, and yet he made a goodsoldier, a peerless king, and the greatest poet that ever lived. Later on, we should never forget that the Star of Bethlehem was first seen by rthe shepherds, tending their ocks by night. Virgil first sang the praise of shepherd life in his bucolics, before he sang the praise of the arms and the man. All sacred and classic history is replete with descriptions of Pastoral Life. All the world knows that astronomy was first made: a science by the shepherds, watch ing the moving grandeurs of the skies. Book excerpt: In Through Wolf's Eyes, Jane Lindskold introduced Firekeeper, the young girl raised by intelligent, language-using wolves. Abducted back into human society, Firekeeper found that, in the world of deadly human political intrigues, her training as a pack animal served her well. Later, in Wolf Captured, Firekeeper and her lupine companion Blind Seer found themselves kidnapped and dragged overseas, to the unfamiliar land of Liglimon, where humans have a different relationship to intelligent animals. Now, still in Liglimon, Firekeeper and Blind Seer respond to a request for assistance from Truth, the soothsayer-jaguar. Then, while helping Truth, Firekeeper and her companion come across evidence of elaborate investigations into kinds of ancient magics taboo in Liglimoshti culture. It appears more people in Liglimon are willing to flout this taboo than anyone cares to admit, and Firekeeper and Blind Seer decide their duty is to find out more. But Truth knows more than she's telling. She can see and trace future timelines for particular individuals, which in the past has led her into madness. Since then, the Voice that guided her out of that madness has continued to speak to her, and it's not her friend. Eventually Truth realizes that her Voice may well be a person the Liglimoshti call "The Meddler" -- a dangerous trickster figure. But Truth doesn't own up to this until far too late... Compellingly told, rich with real people and real animals, WOLF HUNTING is the latest and strongest in an increasingly and rewarding sequence of fantasy epics. Book Synopsis The Wolf Hunters by : James Oliver Curwood

Download or read book The Wolf Hunters written by James Oliver Curwood and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by James Oliver Curwood was originally published in 1908 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. "The Wolf Hunters" sees an American boy who has become friends with a Native American boy, together they discover a mysterious cabin, and stumble upon a secret that has lain hidden for half a century. "The Wolf Hunters" is the prequel to "The Gold Hunters." James Oliver 'Jim' Curwood was an American action-adventure writer and conservationist. He was born on 12th June, 1878, in Owosso, Michigan, USA. In 1900, Curwood sold his first story while working for the Detroit News-Tribune, and after this, his career in writing was made. By 1909 he had saved enough money to travel to the Canadian northwest, a trip that provided the inspiration for his wilderness adventure stories. The success of his novels afforded him the opportunity to return to the Yukon and Alaska for several months each year - allowing Curwood to write more than thirty such books. Curwood's adventure writing followed in the tradition of Jack London. Like London, Curwood set many of his works in the wilds of the Great Northwest and often used animals as lead characters (Kazan, Baree; Son of Kazan, The Grizzly King and Nomads of the North). Many of Curwood's adventure novels also feature romance as primary or secondary plot consideration. This approach gave his work broad commercial appeal and helped drive his appearance on several best-seller lists in the early 1920s. His most successful work was his 1920 novel, The River's End. The book sold more than 100,000 copies and was the fourth best-selling title of the year in the United States, according to Publisher's Weekly. He contributed to various literary and popular magazines throughout his career, and his bibliography includes more than 200 such articles, short stories and serializations. Curwood was an avid hunter in his youth; however, as he grew older, he became an advocate of environmentalism and was appointed to the 'Michigan Conservation Commission' in 1926. The change in his attitude toward wildlife can be best expressed by a quote he gave in The Grizzly King: that 'The greatest thrill is not to kill but to let live.' Despite this change in attitude, Curwood did not have an ultimately fruitful relationship with nature. In 1927, while on a fishing trip in Florida, Curwood was bitten on the thigh by what was believed to have been a spider and he had an immediate allergic reaction. Health problems related to the bite escalated over the next few months as an infection set in. He died soon after in his nearby home on Williams Street, on 13th August 1927.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wolf is an adept killer, able to take down prey much larger than itself. While adapted to hunt primarily hoofed animals, a wolf - or especially a pack of wolves - can kill individuals of just about any species. Combining behavioral data, thousands of hours of original field observations, research in the literature, a wealth of illustrations, and - in the e-book edition and online - video segments from cinematographer Robert K. Landis, the authors create a compelling and complex picture of these hunters.
