Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of sexual abuse on males who were sexually abused as adolescents. the standardized open-ended interview questions were designed to provide information centering on the effects of sexual abuse. the research focused on three interrelated questions: (1) to what extent and in what way did male victims who were sexually abused during their adolescent period experience shame? (2) to what extent and in what way do they continue to experience shame? (3) What have been and what are the effects of this experience of shame? Four instruments were completed by each man. They were: Kern's Lifestyle Scale; Internalized Shame Scale (Cook); Family of Origin Scale (Cook); and the Willhite and Bartholow Form of the Adlerian Lifestyle. Results from the instruments indicated that seven of twelve men experienced internalized shame, nine of twelve perceived themselves as adopting the victim lifestyle belief and eight of twelve experienced parental homes where the father was perceived in a negative way. the interview responses of the men indicated that the healing and recovery following the sexual abuse will be an on-going process for them. They regretted and mourned postponement, if not the loss of positive outcomes in their lives in the areas of self-esteem and intimacy. the sexual abuse experiences elicited a whole range of feelings from numbness to revenge. the effects of the sexual abuse were expressed in terms of distrust, guilt, fear, confusion, anger, self-blame and shame. Shame was experienced by each man and continues to be felt in varying intensity by five of the twelve men. Just as the sexual abuse of each young man affected his total being, the on-going recovery affects his total personhood. Victims do become living persons again.
