Book Synopsis The Chemistry Between Us by : Larry Young PhD
Download or read book The Chemistry Between Us written by Larry Young PhD and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much control do we have over love? Much less than we like to think. All that mystery, all that poetry, all those complex behaviors surrounding human bonding leading to the most life-changing decisions we’ll ever make, are unconsciously driven by a few molecules in our brains. How does love begin? How can two strangers come to the conclusion that it would not only be pleasant to share their lives, but that they must share them? How can a man say he loves his wife, yet still cheat on her? Why do others stay in relationships even after the romance fades? How is it possible to fall in love with the “wrong” person? How do people come to have a “type”? Physical attraction, jealousy, infidelity, mother-infant bonding—all the behaviors that so often leave us befuddled—are now being teased out of the fog of mystery thanks to today’s social neuroscience. Larry Young, one of the world’s leading experts in the field, and journalist Brian Alexander explain how those findings apply to you. Drawing on real human stories and research from labs around the world, The Chemistry Between Us is a bold attempt to create a “grand unified theory” of love. Some of the mind-blowing insights include: Love can get such a grip on us because it is, literally, an addiction. To a woman falling in love, a man is like her baby. Why it’s false to say society makes gender, and how it’s possible to have the body of one gender and the brain of another. Why some people are more likely to cheat than others. Why we sometimes truly can’t resist temptation. Young and Alexander place their revelations into historical, political, and social contexts. In the process, they touch on everything from gay marriage to why single-mother households might not be good for society. The Chemistry Between Us offers powerful insights into love, sex, gender, sexual orientation, and family life that will prove to be enlightening, controversial, and thought provoking.

Book Synopsis Pictures from Home by : Larry Sultan
Download or read book Pictures from Home written by Larry Sultan and published by Mack. This book was released on 2017 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work -- Provided by the publisher.

His passion is helping others achieve a better return on life through strategic planning. Jim is committed to providing clarity to his clients so they can retire with confidence. AUTHOR'S MESSAGE From birth to age 5, a child's brain develops faster than any other time in life. As a lifelong learner, I read a lot of books and among my favorite topics to learn about is the psychology of the brain and how we are wired for behaviors. Since behavior is the primary determinant for financial success this is an important topic as studies have shown 85% of Americans are ill-prepared for the retirement they envision. 95% of our brains are formed by age 6 and many of our unconscious habits are created by this time. A light bulb went off in my head when I read that.I have a 4- and a 6-year-old at home. I read to them every night and thought, why would I not start planting that 'savings chip' in their brain as early as possible, when their brains are developing at the fastest rate of their life and when their habits are being formed? I started looking for books to teach children under age six how to save. I couldn't find any that fit.And that is how "Larry the Bunny Saves his Money" was created. If you have little ones in your life who you love, this book is for them -- and you.

Download or read book Undoing Monogamy written by Angela Willey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Undoing Monogamy Angela Willey offers a radically interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of monogamy in U.S. science and culture, propelled by queer feminist desires for new modes of conceptualization and new forms of belonging. She approaches the politics and materiality of monogamy as intertwined with one another such that disciplinary ways of knowing themselves become an object of critical inquiry. Refusing to answer the naturalization of monogamy with a naturalization of nonmonogamy, Willey demands a critical reorientation toward the monogamy question in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The book examines colonial sexual science, monogamous voles, polyamory, and the work of Alison Bechdel and Audre Lorde to show how challenging the lens through which human nature is seen as monogamous or nonmonogamous forces us to reconsider our investments in coupling and in disciplinary notions of biological bodies.
