Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apparent history of the duck decoy may be described in terms of a series of transformations from hunting tool to collectible artifact to commodity. This transformational trajectory may be viewed, moreover, in an economic light: the decoy originally functions to provide ducks for subsistence or profit; it next enters collections which are at first owned by individuals who had some connection to the decoy as hunting tool, and where it begins to acquire associations with (market) price and to become dissociated from social and cultural relations of value; and it finally becomes a more or less "pure" commodity, where price (based on provenance) figures almost exclusively in defining its identity. This dissertation traces these transformations of the duck decoy, but does so by uncovering its dynamic history and displaying this as a part of the mentalite of coastal New Jersey in the last half of the nineteenth century. The argument is grounded in a close reading of three distinct but related bodies of material: (1) nineteenth century published sources such as sportsman's manuals and ornithological literature; (2) nineteenth century primary source materials generated locally along the New Jersey coast, such as newspaper accounts, census records, diaries, business ledgers, and related materials; and (3) interview materials collected ethnographically with twentieth century decoy carvers, hunters, collectors, haymen and local residents of the coastal towns. These materials collectively suggest that the decoy was part of a society and culture that actively resisted the penetration of capitalism and capitalist relations. It is on this ground that the decoy is a highly contested object today.

Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of 2018 by Fast Company, this is a "sharply written and brilliantly reported" (Shelf Awareness) look inside Reddit, the wildly popular, often misunderstood website that has changed the culture of the Internet. Reddit hails itself as "the front page of the Internet." It's the third most-visited website in the United States -- and yet, millions of Americans have no idea what it is. We Are the Nerds is an engrossing look deep inside this captivating, maddening enterprise, whose army of obsessed users have been credited with everything from solving cold case crimes and spurring tens of millions of dollars in charitable donations to seeding alt-right fury and landing Donald Trump in the White House. We Are the Nerds is a gripping start-up narrative: the story of how Reddit's founders, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, rose up from their suburban childhoods to become millionaires and create an icon of the digital age -- before seeing the site engulfed in controversies and nearly losing control of it for good. Based on Christine Lagorio-Chafkin's exclusive access to founders Ohanian and Huffman, We Are the Nerds is also a compelling exploration of the way we all communicate today -- and how we got here. Reddit and its users have become a mirror of the Internet: it has dingy corners, shiny memes, malicious trolls, and a sometimes heart-melting ability to connect people across cultures, oceans, and ideological divides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William McInnes' bestselling memoir, A Man's Got To Have A Hobby, takes us back to the long summer holidays of the 1960s and 70s, and the last of the baby-boomer childhoods. William writes with humour and affection about his family, and especially his mum and dad, who talked to the TV set and enjoyed life in their house near the bay. William McInnes is a talented writer and a natural storyteller. A tail-end baby boomer, he recalls summer holidays that seemed to go on forever, when he and his mates would walk down to fish in the bay; a time when the Aussie battler stood as the local Labor candidate and looked out for his mates; and a time when the whole family would rush into the lounge room to watch a new commercial on TV. He writes about his father - a strong character who talks to the furniture, dances with William's mother in the kitchen, and spends his free time fixing up the house and doing the best for his family. In William's writing you can hear his father speaking and listen to his mother singing. This is a book about people who aren't famous but should be. It's about cane toads and families, love and hope and fear, laughter, death and life. Most of all, it is a realistic, down-to-earth book by a man who had a great time growing up. His warmth and humour come through on every page. This Australian memoir tells of a time that will be familiar to many readers and a delight for all. 'McInnes applies a deft touch to a swag of recollections, shaping a yarn that should be listed with the national treasures' - The Courier Mail 'This will make you laugh till you cry' - The Age 'A perfect balance between humour, humility, seriousness and light, laughter and tears' - Sunday Telegraph

But there’s more than just rum-running going on these days; there’s a growing trade in opium and people, as McCloskey finds out when he rescues the survivor of a bad smuggling deal. As if this wasn’t enough, McCloskey is also trying to get his dinner club back on its feet, while his girlfriend, the indomitable Vera Maude, has a wedding to plan ... and it’s not her own. He’s trying to hold things together while police corruption and domestic strife threaten to pull it all apart. Then, a series of murders brings powerful groups into conflict and may drag McCloskey into the fray.

Book #1 — Riverside Drive Jack McCloskey returned to Windsor, Ontario, from the Great War lost in a battle with his inner demons. When he channels his energy into amateur fights, he's noticed by a gangster moonlighting as a boxing promoter. After a brief professional stint, Jack is invited to join the crew in the early days of Prohibition along the Detroit River. Book #2 — Maiden Lane It's the winter of 1923 and the border towns are under a deep freeze. As if the police didn't have their hands full, drug-smuggling, human trafficking, and a grisly find in the river steer them into unfamiliar territory, and a whisper of the occult brings a wholly unexpected twist. Book #3 — Prospect Avenue For bootleggers like Jack McCloskey, Prospect Avenue is just another dead end, and not even one of the better ones, but at least it’s away from prying eyes. But Jack is about to learn that what goes on in the shadows isn’t at all as “nice” as what he does, as the trade in opium — and people — picks up in Windsor. Nora Blackbird--pregnant at last --is spending summer afternoons wallowing in the Bucks County pool of her best friend, Lexie Paine, who has just been released from prison. At night, Nora is covering Philadelphia's high-society events for the local newspaper. And this time she doesn't have to look far for a good story. Next door, a Broadway show is in rehearsal at the estate of Toodles Tuttle, the long-deceased but ever-legendary composer. Reigning over the estate is Toodles's diva widow, Boom Boom. The demanding old broad still rules with an iron fist, and considering the chorus line of enemies she's racked up over the years, her death has been a hotly anticipated event. So imagine everyone's dismay when it's her beloved daughter, Jenny, who drops dead--from a cause that is anything but natural--just as the lights are set to go on for the lucrative new Toodles musical. Yet murder is only an overture to the drama to come.... Nora's sister Libby, a soon-to-be-grandmother, has gotten herself into a sticky situation, wooed by both a lowly bug exterminator and a cheesecake-loving Broadway impresario. Edgy sister Emma has a dangerous new boyfriend who may jeopardize her show-jumping exploits. And the love of Nora's life, Mick Abruzzo, has been desperate to prevent Nora from meeting the most notorious member of his mobbed-up family--his mother. Now Nora has to deal with the bump-and-grind of her personal life, and also bring the curtain down on a daring killer--before he forces her to exit stage left, permanently.
