This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic, New York Times-bestselling book on the psychology of racism that shows us how to talk about race in America. Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? How can we get past our reluctance to discuss racial issues? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about communicating across racial and ethnic divides and pursuing antiracism. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand dynamics of race and racial inequality in America.

Book Synopsis Sitting Hours and the Parliamentary Calendar by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Procedure Committee

This book was released on 2012-06-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a huge in increase in the constituency workload over the past few years adding to the pressure on Members of Parliament. Each Member has a different way of working which means in considering sitting hours there are no mainstream options which are necessarily right or wrong. The evidence suggests that the current balance of about 150 days over 34 weeks per year is broadly correct and should remain approximately as is. The Committee recommends that the House should be given the opportunity to vote on whether the House should continue to sit in September from 2013 onwards. There is widespread recognition that there is no scope for any diminution in the time available to the House for debate and scrutiny of legislation. The current pattern of 8 sitting hours on each sitting day between Monday and Thursday should therefore also continue, subject to future decisions concerning Friday sittings. Suggestions were heard that the House should sit normal working hours but that could be ill-suited to the transaction of other important Parliamentary business and needs of Members whose constituencies are some distance from Westminster. The House should be enabled to come to a decision in respect of each different day. The Committee is also currently considering whether consideration of private Members' bills should be moved from Fridays; and programming of legislation. The proposal of 'injury time' to compensate for time spent on oral statements was deemed undesirable but the Committee suggests that there should be a mechanism for backbenchers to question a Minister between 11.00 and 11.30 on Wednesdays

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the correspondence between Valentin Dewaele, a Belgian First World War volunteer, and his mother, a refugee in North Wales. It is complemented by extracts from his diaries and letters from friends and other family members. It describes the extraordinary life in the trenches at the front in Western Flanders and Northern France. It a striking account of the long moments of boredom and discomfort, followed by episodes of intense drama. The letters and diaries continue to February 1919, when Valentin is demobilised. The correspondence with family and friends grows after the German capitulation as communication lines are re-established and people take stock of what has happened, seek out who has survived, gossip about who has collaborated with the Germans. Another important topic is the Dewaele family business, a prominent draper shop in Ostend, left in the hands of staff as the family fled to the UK before the Germans moved in.

Download or read book As Long as I'm Sitting Here written by Robert Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever attended a seminar where the facilitator paces back and forth to a preset rhythm of words, poignant breaks, and crescendos all while referring to a pile of well-rehearsed notes? If so, As Long as I'm Sitting Here will teach you how to have fun as you navigate your way through any seminar. Robert B. Smith will have you laughing out loud as he cleverly summarizes a day in the life of a seminar attendee. You will learn how to overcome boredom as the speaker rambles on about his life story, attempts to use humor to teach valuable workplace lessons, and encourages participants to eat five-thousand-calorie sticky buns during breaks. Smith reflects on his own experiences as a seminar leader as he pokes fun at the entire process, including how speakers work the room, how they single out the hecklers, and how they incorporate the "hard sell" of their books and audio tapes throughout the day. All kidding aside, Smith's message is clear. Attending a self-help seminar cannot change you unless you choose to be changed. As Long as I'm Sitting Here will show you a whole new way of looking at a day spent out of the office-sticky buns and all!
Book Synopsis You Can't Get There... by Sitting Here by : Chuck Sink
Download or read book You Can't Get There... by Sitting Here written by Chuck Sink and published by . This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an entertaining story of a normal couple, almost normal couple, who fulfilled their lifetime dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail. We started March 1st at Springer Mountain near Dahlonega, Georgia hiking through fourteen states to finish the trail and attain the designation of "ThruHiker" atop Mt. Katahdin near Millinocket, Maine on October 12th. The story will describe the peaks and valleys of emotions we experienced as we hiked over 2,175 challenging miles. It will talk about our fear as we get caught above tree line on Mt. Lafayette in New Hampshire as life threatening winds of over 80 miles per hour from Hurricane Katrina pummel us into the rocks. You will feel the best and worst weather that Mother Nature hurled at us including 20 degrees below zero wind chills in Georgia and over 100 degree heat in New York. You will read about the different problems we solved relying on nothing but each other and what we carried on our backs. You can laugh with us as we describe our hitchhiking adventures with our good hiking buddy, Mayfly. We hitchhiked into and out of towns so we could pick up our mail drops, replenish supplies, shower and sometimes to find a buffet to satiate our enormous appetites. You can identify with us as we relate the many different relationships we had with the great people we met on the trail. There are wonderful anecdotes of "Trail Magic" that family, friends and total strangers created for us by giving unselfishly of themselves to help us along the trail. We hope the story will make you feel that "you" have hiked the Appalachian Trail with us. So, c'mon, lace up your boots, strap on your pack, grab your hiking sticks and let's hike north to Mt. Katahdin!

Download or read book Cry Father written by Benjamin Whitmer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second novel from the critically acclaimed writer of Pike, which was nominated for France’s prestigious Grand Prix de Littérature Policière crime fiction award and “easily rivals Larry Brown’s most renowned novels” (Spinetingler Magazine). In the tradition of Cormac McCarthy and Larry Brown comes a haunting story about men, their fathers, their sons, and the legacy of violence. For Patterson Wells, disaster is the norm. Working alongside dangerous, desperate, itinerant men as a tree clearer in disaster zones, he's still dealing with the loss of his young son. Writing letters to the boy offers some solace. The bottle gives more. Upon a return trip to Colorado, Patterson stops to go fishing with an old acquaintance, only to find him in a meth-induced delirium and keeping a woman tied up in the bathtub. In the ensuing chain of events, which will test not only his future but his past, Patterson tries to do the right thing. Still, in the lives of those he knows, violence and justice have made of each other strange, intoxicating bedfellows. Hailed as “the next great American writer” (Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana), Benjamin Whitmer has crafted a literary triumph that is by turns harrowing, darkly comic, and wise.
