Book excerpt: Beautiful. -Recommended by Tân, City Lights Books A man drives his truck up to a cliff's edge. Unable to go any further, he opens the back door of his truck and a flock of birds flies out, but, as the man soon discovers, a small timid bird remains. Surprised and delighted, the man acts kindly towards the bird and an intimacy develops. After lunch, the man tries to show the bird that he should fly off and join his friends. The man's comic attempt at flight deepens the encounter between these two very different creatures. Soon the bird flies off and the man drives away, but in a surprise twist the bird and his friends return, and in a starkly lyrical moment we see them all experience something entirely new. Germano Zullo is a prolific writer and poet who lives in Geneva, Switzerland. He writes for adults and children alike, and has written many popular children's comics and stories. Albertine has illustrated loads of children's books and also illustrates for many of the daily French newspapers in Switzerland. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts in Geneva.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fly Home, Little Bird is Beverly's memoir, which focuses on the unexpected consequences of her parents becoming evangelical missionaries. The story arc includes living in a residential school spanning ten years where she was abused by the school nurse and other dorm parents. As an adult she also became a missionary. In her mid-thirties she had the agency to leave the church and create a life outside evangelical communities. Beverly became an activist for reform and change in the policies and practices of reporting abuse of children in mission agencies in both the U.S. and Canada. This included holding a "prayer vigil" at the C&MA's annual conference to put public pressure on them to investigate allegations of abuse (it worked). She has co-founded on-line Facebook groups which have many members from a plethora of mission boarding schools and agencies. And she is one of eight former MK's featured in a documentary, All God's Children. The documentary has been widely viewed in communities of former MK's and their families as well as in churches. Perhaps the most important thread in Fly Home Little Bird is how, with therapeutic help, she changed the web of intergenerational trauma within her immediate family.

"I suppose it’s now or never…" But one of Baby’s wings is twisted and shrunken and not at all like the other one. Instead of flying, Baby plummets to the ground. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author of H is for Hawk explores the human relationship to the natural world in this “dazzling” essay collection (Wall Street Journal). In Vesper Flights, Helen Macdonald brings together a collection of her best loved essays, along with new pieces on topics ranging from nostalgia for a vanishing countryside to the tribulations of farming ostriches to her own private vespers while trying to fall asleep. Meditating on notions of captivity and freedom, immigration and flight, Helen invites us into her most intimate experiences: observing the massive migration of songbirds from the top of the Empire State Building, watching tens of thousands of cranes in Hungary, seeking the last golden orioles in Suffolk’s poplar forests. She writes with heart-tugging clarity about wild boar, swifts, mushroom hunting, migraines, the strangeness of birds’ nests, and the unexpected guidance and comfort we find when watching wildlife.

He realized the birds had no songs. He devised a challenge and told the birds who ever could fly the highest, would receive a very beautiful song. But not all the birds were honest. In his desire to win the game, the small hermit thrush jumped on the back of the great eagle. The eagle flew higher than any of the birds, but when he came back to land, the Great Spirit said the hermit thrush had gone the highest since he was on eagle’s back. Hermit Thrush was awarded a beautiful song, but in his shame for not being honest, he flew into the deep woods. To this day, you may hear the lovely song of the hermit thrush, but you may not ever see him.

Book excerpt: This is a little book about two big questions, the two greatest questions in all of Western theological thought. Does God exist, and is Jesus God? There are no easy answers to these questions and, certainly, they cannot be addressed in such a small work. The answers are a work of a lifetime. Mr. Jungers has devoted twenty-one books to this subject so far, and he feels that he is only skimming the surface. Thomas Aquinas wrote twenty-one large volumes in Latin trying to answer these questions, and, at the end, said that all his writings seemed like straw. Like the Angelic Doctor, Mr. Jungers attempts to answer both questions in the affirmative. Most of the eight billion people in the world would answer the first question, "Does God Exist", with a yes; however, only about one-forth of the people in the world have ever even entertained the second question, "Is Jesus God"? Certain highlights stand out in this book: a series of e-mails on the birth and early years of the life of Jesus of Nazareth (written around the 2004 Christmas season); Jesus in the eyes of the Jews and the Romans; and the meaning of the Lord's Prayer, when it was said early on by his own disciples. One is invited to read this book with the eyes of faith, in the spirit of St. Paul: "If you confess with your lips That Jesus is Lord And believe in your heart That God raised him from the dead, You will be saved." (Rm 10:9)
