Book excerpt: Arlington County, Virginia's oldest African American community, the Nauck community, which dates back to 1844, is rich in history and abundant with bridge builders, both past and present, who have made local and national contributions while fighting for their right to experience a good quality of life. Bridge Builders of Nauck/Green Valley: Past and Present is a compilation of the stories, interviews, and biographies of these extraordinary African Americans who pursued and found success, despite the laws at the time that limited their access to everything from home loans to education. The perseverance of the pioneers of Nauck is alive through their accomplishments, triumphs, and achievements. Whether in their own words, the words of their loved ones, or through history books, Taylor's labor of love seeks to memorialize the important work these African Americans have achieved and the legacy they leave for future generations. Said Taylor, "Ordinary Nauck/Green Valley residents surviving Jim Crow Laws, lacking financial backing, becoming economically independent, educating themselves and their children, fighting for freedom, and remembering from whence they came should be an inspiration to all to celebrate and continue sharing future, ordinary resident's accomplishments." About the Author Dr. Alfred O. Taylor Jr. was born and raised in Arlington County, Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Technical Teacher Training, a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision of Adult Education, and a Doctorate of Education from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Administration of Higher Education. Taylor served as Assistant Dean for the College of Professional Studies (and was later named Acting Dean). Taylor retired from the University of the District of Columbia after thirty-one years of service. Taylor is still active in his community and religious community, serving as President of the Nauck Civic Association and as Chairman of the Deacon's Ministry at the Macedonia Baptist Church, among many others. Taylor and his wife, Delores, a retired D.C. Public Schools teacher, have two children, three grandsons, and two great-granddaughters. He hopes that Nauck/Green Valley: Past and Present will become a living document that will be continuously supplemented as future generations of "Nauckians" make their contributions to society.

By 1781, the Revolutionary War's final siege had been staged, and the British were caught without resources to win the final battle against the American and Allied forces. Freedom was won for America, but Yorktown would continue to see war. In 1862, the Peninsula Campaign of the Civil War led to a monthlong battle near the site of the previous conflict. In 1917, World War I brought the embarkation of the Atlantic Fleet, and within a few decades, World War II would change Yorktown and the nation forever. These historic postcards portray the first family houses, the churches, the courthouses, the military, the battlefields, and the commemorative memorials of the area, showing the town's progression through time, from the 18th century through the present day.

Book excerpt: Yorktown, Virginia, first came to prominence in American history when the Revolutionary War brought the final battle to the city. Once a battlefield and later planned to be a golf course and grand hotel, the site today is a historical monument maintained by the National Parks Service. The history of this colonial town has evolved tremendously from the 17th century through the present. Focusing on the period of 1900 through the 1940s, Images of America: Yorktown highlights the places, people, and times before the area's designation as a historical monument. Among the photographs contained within this volume are those illustrating Yorktown's bustling port, preWorld War business development, and celebration at the conclusion of the Great Depression that characterize some of the area's proudest times.

Book excerpt: For the fiftieth anniversary of the completion of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, a beautifully produced, heavily illustrated edition of Gay Talese's classic history of the iconic structure, now with a new introduction by the author. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, linking the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Staten Island, is an engineering marvel. At 13,700 feet, it is the longest suspension bridge in the United States and the sixth longest in the world. But the sheer size of the bridge is only one part of its complicated, fascinating history. Renowned journalist Gay Talese chronicled the human drama the bridge's completion: from the construction workers high on the beams to the backroom dealing that displaced whole neighborhoods to make way for the bridge, through to the opening of this marvel of human ingenuity and engineering. Now in a new, beautifully packaged edition featuring dozens of breathtaking photos and architectural drawings, The Bridge remains both a riveting narrative of politics and courage and a demonstration of Talese's consummate reporting and storytelling that will captivate new generations of readers.

Book excerpt: In the year 1868, in Brooklyn, young Jacob Knickerbocker is torn between two loveshis wife Nelly and building a bridge across a treacherous river. Employed as Scribe to a famous bridge builder, he has no idea that his journey through hell is about to begin. Jacob is thrust into a world of steam-powered engines and political corruption. After quicksand is found under the river bed, he takes it upon himself to study caissons disease as men descend nearly sixty feet beneath the surface. Despite the horrors of work, Jacob and Nelly are thrilled when she becomes pregnant. But Nelly and her newborn son die horribly in childbirth. Grief-stricken, Jacob creates an imaginary world, writing to his deceased wife in a secret journal. Drinking laudanum (opium), disillusioned and dissolute, he walks the streets of New York and disappears. Will the disheartened Scribe return to his Brooklyn Bridge? How will his monumental endeavor find footing in those wild and turbulent waters?
