Book Synopsis A Yorkshire Lass at the Court of Thatcher by : Elizabeth Peacock
Download or read book A Yorkshire Lass at the Court of Thatcher written by Elizabeth Peacock and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Peacock served as MP for Batley and Spen for 14 years and was one of the most outspoken politicians during her time at Westminster.??Famed for her 'no nonsense, just common sense' approach, Elizabeth won many admirers along with a reputation for being difficult. Not afraid to vote against her own party, the Conservatives, Elizabeth genuinely said and did what she thought was right for all Britain, but especially her local constituents.??At the time she became an MP, she was one of very few women to do so but quickly made her mark in a very male dominated environment. She was the first woman MP to take part in the Lords v Commons charity motor race at Brands Hatch in which she more than held her own. ??Elizabeth was heavily involved in the Miners Strike of the 80's and was one of the few to vote against her own government as well as meeting regularly with Arthur Scargill, an unthinkable thing to do for a Conservative MP. She would go on to vote against the Major government too, never to be difficult, but just because she thought their actions weren't in the best interest of the nation. Her outspoken views on the IRA would lead to an unsuccessful but extremely frightening attack on her car whilst parked outside her home.??In this candid, honest and often very funny autobiography, Elizabeth reveals what it was like to work at Westminster during those turbulent years. She offers frank assessments of the men and women she worked with including Margaret Thatcher, John Major and many others.??A completely absorbing and insightful read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Yarns of a Professional Gongoozler", or "Tales of English Canal Life at Dixie's Marina", is a series of eight short stories set around a fictionalised canal boat marina in the North-West of England. The British canal system stretches over two thousand miles, much of it passing through some of the most attractive and peaceful areas of countryside to be found in England and Wales. Occasional urban sections provide a wealth of historical detail relating to an industrial heritage long passed into the pages of history. Canal boating and boat ownership is a rapidly developing industry, and inland waterways marinas are continually being constructed throughout the system to accommodate the steadily increasing numbers of steel narrowboats and GRP cruisers that abound. R J Adams entered the business both as a marina manager and narrowboat dweller. During the course of some twelve or so years he met some amazing people, saw some incredible sights, and laughed uproariously at a plethora of amusing incidents. Each of the eight stories, though self-sufficient, are interlinked and best read consecutively. They are based on the author's own personal experiences over twelve years as an inland waterway's marina manager. Most of the events described in this book actually occurred, but with the exception of 'Molly", characters have been fictionalised and bear no relation to anyone, living or dead.

Book Synopsis The Yankee Yorkshireman by : Mary H. Blewett
Download or read book The Yankee Yorkshireman written by Mary H. Blewett and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a textual and contextual appraisal of the writings of Yorkshire-born Hedley Smith (1909-94) whose depiction of the fictional mill village of Briardale, Rhode Island, captures an early twentieth-century labor diaspora peopled with textile workers. Enraged and embittered at the transformatory experience of his own emigration, Smith used fiction to explore Yorkshire immigrants' culture and stubborn refusal to assimilate, their vital sexuality, and their vivid social customs. As Smith's writings reveal, emigration involves grief and anger, often universally concealed and problematic. Adopting a transnational perspective, Mary H. Blewett links Smith's fictional community to empirical data on the substance of working-class lives both in Yorkshire and in New England's worsted textile industries.
