Book excerpt: '¬SI'¬"ve reached a point in my life where it would be a burden to consider what other people think about me. I can no longer afford to carry around the weight of the world and their opinions. I'¬Üm going to be happy with who I am and give myself permission to be free.'¬This is what Mary said on the morning she turned 30. After living a life trying to please those around her and completely ignoring her own feelings, she decided that day to simply stop. Gone were the days that other people could tell her how she should look, how much she should weigh, and who she should love.Scattered Tears is a poetic depiction of Mary'¬"s life. It describes her climb up from low self esteem and the challenges she faced trying to live up to everyone'¬"s standards but her own. Each chapter reveals a tear that has been scattered and a new scar that has been healed. For every tear that she scatters, Mary in turn plants a seed to embrace a new outlook on life. From breakups to triumphs; from laughter to heartache; from pain to pleasure - this book will celebrate it all. Life is a journey and it is meant to teach us to adapt, accept, and embrace. Join Mary as she learns how to love and accept herself for who she is and emerges a new creation in the process.

Book Synopsis The Archive and the Repertoire by : Diana Taylor
Download or read book The Archive and the Repertoire written by Diana Taylor and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Archive and the Repertoire preeminent performance studies scholar Diana Taylor provides a new understanding of the vital role of performance in the Americas. From plays to official events to grassroots protests, performance, she argues, must be taken seriously as a means of storing and transmitting knowledge. Taylor reveals how the repertoire of embodied memory—conveyed in gestures, the spoken word, movement, dance, song, and other performances—offers alternative perspectives to those derived from the written archive and is particularly useful to a reconsideration of historical processes of transnational contact. The Archive and the Repertoire invites a remapping of the Americas based on traditions of embodied practice. Examining various genres of performance including demonstrations by the children of the disappeared in Argentina, the Peruvian theatre group Yuyachkani, and televised astrological readings by Univision personality Walter Mercado, Taylor explores how the archive and the repertoire work together to make political claims, transmit traumatic memory, and forge a new sense of cultural identity. Through her consideration of performances such as Coco Fusco and Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s show Two Undiscovered Amerindians Visit . . . , Taylor illuminates how scenarios of discovery and conquest haunt the Americas, trapping even those who attempt to dismantle them. Meditating on events like those of September 11, 2001 and media representations of them, she examines both the crucial role of performance in contemporary culture and her own role as witness to and participant in hemispheric dramas. The Archive and the Repertoire is a compelling demonstration of the many ways that the study of performance enables a deeper understanding of the past and present, of ourselves and others.

Book Synopsis Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples by : Adrienne Edgar
Download or read book Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples written by Adrienne Edgar and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples examines the racialization of identities and its impact on mixed couples and families in Soviet Central Asia. In marked contrast to its Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union celebrated mixed marriages among its diverse ethnic groups as a sign of the unbreakable friendship of peoples and the imminent emergence of a single "Soviet people." Yet the official Soviet view of ethnic nationality became increasingly primordial and even racialized in the USSR's final decades. In this context, Adrienne Edgar argues, mixed families and individuals found it impossible to transcend ethnicity, fully embrace their complex identities, and become simply "Soviet." Looking back on their lives in the Soviet Union, ethnically mixed people often reported that the "official" nationality in their identity documents did not match their subjective feelings of identity, that they were unable to speak "their own" native language, and that their ambiguous physical appearance prevented them from claiming the nationality with which they most identified. In all these ways, mixed couples and families were acutely and painfully affected by the growth of ethnic primordialism and by the tensions between the national and supranational projects in the Soviet Union. Intermarriage and the Friendship of Peoples is based on more than eighty in-depth oral history interviews with members of mixed families in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, along with published and unpublished Soviet documents, scholarly and popular articles from the Soviet press, memoirs and films, and interviews with Soviet-era sociologists and ethnographers.

Book Synopsis How Often I Have Chosen Love by : Xiao Yue Shan
Download or read book How Often I Have Chosen Love written by Xiao Yue Shan and published by Discover New Art LLC. This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color and light and life invigorate Xiao Yue Shan's de- but chapbook--or, in her own words: "a thrill of poppy and chrysanthemum". How Often I Have Chosen Love explores the rediscovery of her nuanced and complex family, her nuanced and complex sense of home, the nuanced and complex history of China. From the flag in Tiananmen Square to the apartments of San Francisco, Shan complicates our sense of home and history by filling every reflection and every moment with the bursting blue light of Hong Kong, the delicate sprawl of blooming vegetation--envisioning a creation myth that seeks to have "no tale of falling." In the voice of a modern woman of two nations, Shan's work finds her deepest authenticity. Her rich palette of color, of flower and nation and jewel, is an achievement only Shan's unique perspective could conceive. Xiao Yue Shan is an emerging poet whose words and heart beat with the exact rhythm of our times.
