Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monsters, ghosts, fantastic beings, and supernatural phenomena of all sorts haunt the folklore and popular culture of Japan. Broadly labeled yokai, these creatures come in infinite shapes and sizes, from tengu mountain goblins and kappa water spirits to shape-shifting foxes and long-tongued ceiling-lickers. Currently popular in anime, manga, film, and computer games, many yokai originated in local legends, folktales, and regional ghost stories. Drawing on years of research in Japan, Michael Dylan Foster unpacks the history and cultural context of yokai, tracing their roots, interpreting their meanings, and introducing people who have hunted them through the ages. In this delightful and accessible narrative, readers will explore the roles played by these mysterious beings within Japanese culture and will also learn of their abundance and variety through detailed entries, some with original illustrations, on more than fifty individual creatures. The Book of Yokai provides a lively excursion into Japanese folklore and its ever-expanding influence on global popular culture. It also invites readers to examine how people create, transmit, and collect folklore, and how they make sense of the mysteries in the world around them. By exploring yokai as a concept, we can better understand broader processes of tradition, innovation, storytelling, and individual and communal creativity. Ê

The absurd and surreal world of Yokai is back full of stories to tell Following the success of Yokai Museum and Yokai Wonderland, we are proud to publish Yokai Storyland, the third book from Yumoto Koichi, a renowned Yokai art collector who collects around 4,000 artworks ranging from paintings, sculptures, books, magazines, toys, and many more. In response to great demand from readers wanting to know more details about the meaning, background, and stories behind each illustration, this time we have focused on collecting Yokai story books and manga. Very rare, never-before-seen materials (books/manga) are showcased in an immersive full-size, full-page format to give a more realistic feeling. They are all accompanied by full translations and notes to make the content of the manga more accessible to readers. Yokai Storyland will be a treasure trove of information for those who are eager to know everything in detail about Yokai stories. It also presents Japanese culture from a whole new and different perspective. This book is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 explores the world of Yokai stories in the Edo and Meiji periods by introducing seven stories. Chapter 2 sheds light on a quirky manga from the Edo period titled “Jinmen-Zoshi (The Book of Faces)”. This manga was briefly introduced in Yokai Wonderland but only on a few pages with small images. But in this book, it is introduced in a full-size, full-page format and with a full translation. All the characters have the same comical look, which is supposed to be cute but actually gives an uncanny, strange, and even frightening impression. The artworks show these strange characters entertaining themselves in the city of Edo, but little is actually known about The Book of Faces beyond these depictions, including the origins of these characters. Chapter 3 is a Yokai encyclopedia featuring around fifteen characters selected from the book, fully introduced and explained. About the author Koichi Yumoto (b.1950): Collector and researcher of Yokai art. Now he has broken free . . . But she has a new enemy now, more dangerous than any she has yet faced. The demon Hakaimono is free at last, and he has possessed the very person Yumeko trusted to protect her—Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan. Book excerpt: Lewis Carroll (the pen name of Charles Dodgson) was inspired to write down the now classic tale of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" after regaling several young children with it while on an outing. Not long after, the book was published with 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. While it wasn't an immediate success, it has since become a favorite of young people over the generations. It has been released in various other forms since then, with Hollywood taking several cracks at it. But wouldn't you like to read it almost exactly how it was first release? We all know how movies alter books somewhat, and sometimes they make the original book unrecognizable. Here is your chance to read the book as Carroll intended it to be read! This edition is derived from an 1869 reprint of the original 1865 text, making it almost as close as you can get to the original! Imagine sitting down with your children or grandchildren and reading this classic almost exactly as it would have been read more than one hundred years ago. Dodgson was prompted by his friend, George MacDonald (another famous author of the 1800s), to publish this book. Read it yourself, to find out why!

His works are now considered treasure trove of historical significance, and their emphasis on nature, the simplicity of daily life, spirituality, and morality teaches lessons that are just as relevant and important for readers today. Judith Gustafson has painstakingly translated these classic stories into English, making them available for worldwide enjoyment. Her goal was to present them as authentically as possible, bringing out the meaning, tone, and scriptural message that Topelius originally intended. Reading for Children is the perfect collection of stories to be read to or by children. I was pleasantly surprised by the innocence and beauty of Judith's translation. One can sense the poetic art of Zacharius Topelius in the phrasing and stories. It is not easy to translate the intent of the author when many years have passed and the language has evolved. Mrs. Gustafson has performed a difficult task well. -Dwight Gunberg, educator"

Book excerpt: From the co-authors of the classic Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: A fascinating oral history of record spinning told by the groundbreaking DJs themselves. Acclaimed authors and music historians Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton have spent years traveling across the world to interview the revolutionary and outrageous DJs who shaped the last half-century of pop music. The Record Players is the fun and revealing result—a collection of firsthand accounts from the obsessives, the playboys, and the eccentrics that dominated the music scene and contributed to the evolution of DJ culture. In the sixties, radio tastemakers brought their sound to the masses, while early trendsetters birthed the role of the club DJ at temples of hip like the Peppermint Lounge. By the seventies, DJs were changing the course of popular music; and in the eighties, young innovators wore out their cross-faders developing techniques that turned their craft into its own form of music. With discographies, favorite songs, and amazing photos of all the DJs as young firebrands, The Record Players offers an unparalleled music education: from records to synthesizers, from disco to techno, and from influential cliques to arenas packed with thousands of dancing fans.

Despite hesitancy at first, the subject is now examined by scholars of various academic interests and backgrounds. However, the dominant monster investigations are from the post-1900s. This volume focuses on Premodern monsters. The purpose of this volume is to examine various monsters from diverse cultures in order to indicate how each monstrous discourse derives from their mythology’s socio-cultural context. The volume examines several Monsters within their socio-cultural matrix. This includes a variety of monstrosities from diverse cultures and periods. Namely, the examined creatures, or perceived creatures, stem from the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament (Pauline epistles), Reformation England, the Japanese Noh play Dōjōji, Yamauba Myths, and Yōkai Relics from early modern Japanese Buddhism.
