Book excerpt: Legendary yoga teacher Vanda Scaravelli, who died in 1999 at the age of 91, developed an approach to yoga that is radically different from most forms of yoga taught today. The nature of the practice she taught is subtle, and therefore difficult to grasp, and her own book, Awakening the Spine, inspires through its philosophy and images but does not go into detail when describing the practice of asanas. Notes on Yoga is the first book to explain Scaravelli's approach in full, and is bound to be an indispensable guide to Scaravelli yoga for both students and teachers.During Scaravelli's 40 years of practice she accepted only a small number of individual students, all of whom were teachers. Diane Long and Sophy Hoare were both long-term students; Diane Long was the first of Scaravelli's regular students and studied with her for 23 years.

Anyone who has read more than a few books on Tibetan Buddhism will have encountered references to the Six Yogas of Naropa, a preeminent yogic technology system. The six practices—inner heat, illusory body, clear light, consciousness transference, forceful projection, and bardo yoga—gradually came to pervade thousands of monasteries, nunneries, and hermitages throughout Central Asia over the past five and a half centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an integrated approach to pain rehabilitation and combines pain science, rehabilitation and yoga with evidence-based approaches from respected contributors. They demonstrate how to integrate the concepts, philosophies and practices of yoga and pain science in working with people in pain. An essential and often overlooked part of pain rehabilitation is listening to, working with, learning from, and validating the person in pain's lived experience. The book expounds on the movement to a more patient-valued, partnership-based biopsychosocial-spiritual model of healthcare where the patient is an active and empowered participant, as opposed to a model where the healthcare provider is 'fixing' the passive patient. It also explains how practitioners can address the entire human being in pain, and how to include the person as an expert for more effective and self-empowered care.

Sanderson Despite yoga's huge global popularity, relatively little of its roots is known among practitioners. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pop Culture Yoga: A Communication Remix was born out of a series of questions about the paradoxical nature of yoga: How do individuals and groups define yoga? What does it mean to “practice yoga,” and what does this practice involve? What are some of the most important principles, guidelines, or philosophical tenets of yoga that shape people’s definitions and practices? Who has the power and authority to define yoga? What are the limits, if any, of shared definitions of yoga? Kristen C. Blinne explores the myriad ways “yoga” is communicatively constructed and defined in and through popular culture in the United States. In doing so, Blinne offers insight into the many identity work processes in play in the construction of yoga categories, illuminating how individuals’ and groups’ words and actions represent practices of claiming—part of a complex communicative process centered around membership categorization—based on a range of authenticity discourses. Employing popular culture writing styles, Blinne ultimately contends that the majority of yoga styles practiced in the United States are remixes that can be classified as pop culture yoga, a distinct way of understanding this complex phenomenon.

Book excerpt: The book Sahaja Yoga: Healing and Integration of Your Subtle Energy System, written by Saraswati Raman, describes at length the process of activating the dormant Kundalini energy lying within the sacrum bone in each one of us and raising it upward through the chakras along the spinal column through the Sushumna Nadi until it reaches the Sahasrar, or the fontanel bone area, where it unites with the cosmic energy. She speaks of the various healing benefits of Sahaja Yoga: stress management and its utility in attaining an emotional balance. The second part of the book deals with the use of sound, musical notes, and ragas in the activation and energizing of chakras. Music also has been widely used as therapy through its impact on the energy vortices and, thereby, its influence on the various glands and systems within the body. The third part speaks about incarnations and how the various Avataras incarnated to give an impetus to evolution on earth more particularly toward helping the momentum in the evolution of humanity. The work is the outcome of her own application of Sahaja Yoga and its impact in bringing about an all-around integration of the personality—physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.

Book excerpt: The popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program, largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali, a careful examination of the key elements, overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.

Book excerpt: Translation and commentary of one of the most important texts of the Kashmirian Shivaism tradition of Tantra • Author was a student of the late Kalu Rinpoche • Explores the transmission of Mahamudra, the Great Cosmic Gesture • Includes the Vijnanabhaïrava Tantra, which contains the totality of the oldest source text on Yoga The Spandakarika, the "Tantric Song of the Divine Pulsation," is said to have been transmitted directly to the sage Vasugupta from the hands of Shiva on Mount Kailas. In his commentary on these fifty-two stanzas, the sage Ksemaraja described them as the heart of the Mahamudra. The oldest masters of Spandakarika viewed everything in the universe, including matter, as consciousness and created a yoga practice in accordance with this realization. The sacred dance of Yoga Spandakarika, Tandava, is extremely subtle and difficult, requiring thousands of hours of practice to master, yet it surpasses any other physical practice, allowing the practitioner to touch the divine inner pulse. Once its third stage has been mastered, the yogi or yogini is able to manifest the dance of Shiva in space, a tradition visible in the statuary of Tantric temples in India and Tibet. Energy is no longer contracted by the perception of duality, and the mind and body become unbounded, forming a sphere that contains all that was formerly outside. In Yoga Spandakarika Daniel Odier passes on these vanishing teachings as he received them from his Tibetan master, Kalu Rinpoche, and Kashmiri yogi Lalita Devi.
