Book Synopsis Handbook of Finnish by : Jukka K. Korpela
Download or read book Handbook of Finnish written by Jukka K. Korpela and published by Suomen E-painos Oy. This book was released on with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an extensive manual of the Finnish language. It is an ideal source of information when you wish to learn about some specific features of Finnish, such as pronunciation, word formation, notational conventions, or verb forms, even with minimal or no previous understanding of the language. It is intended primarily for people who study, learn, or use Finnish as a foreign language. It is particularly useful to advanced language learners, translators, and linguists. The book covers · all the major features of Finnish grammar, including both standard written language, common spoken language, and features of major dialects · treatises of key specialties of Finnish such as idiomatic uses of locational case forms · in-depth look at some topics largely ignored in Finnish grammars, such as compositive forms of words and “passive” forms of verbs · punctuation rules and rules for writing numbers and special notations · issues in writing and processing Finnish-language texts in the modern world, with computers The book is also useful to people with Finnish as their native or second language, because it gives them a different look at the language. The approach in the book partly deviates from the tradition of Finnish grammars, Finnish style guides, and teaching of Finnish at schools. It treats Finnish as a world to be explored, rather than something we know all too well, and it treats it like any other language, using international concepts and terms.

Book Synopsis The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal by : Duane Richard Karna
Download or read book The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal written by Duane Richard Karna and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The fusion of text with music is one of the most powerful methods by which a composer can express emotion to an audience, yet, all too often, the diction of choral groups is lacking to such a degree as to make the text unintelligible.” So argues Duane R. Karna, who in The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal brings together 30 essays by experts from around the world to describe how the character symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can be used by singers in the choral rehearsal. In an effort to conquer one of the greatest challenges facing choral directors and their choirs, contributors explore the use of the IPA system in a vast range of languages. Readers will find essays devoted to the use of IPA on matters of lyric diction for the following tongues: Baltic Languages, Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, Ecclesiastical Latin, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Germanic Latin, Greek, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish. Holding firmly to the belief that basic instruction in IPA character is part of a choir's training, Karna and his contributors see enormous potential for choirs to expand considerably their foreign-language repertoire and save considerable rehearsal time. The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal is the ideal primer for choral directors and choirmasters as well as choir members.

Book Synopsis The Triumph of the Innocents by : William Holman Hunt
Download or read book The Triumph of the Innocents written by William Holman Hunt and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flight into Egypt I have assumed to have occurred about sixteen months after the birth of Jesus. Guided by Christian tradition, and holding the birth of our Lord to have taken place in December, it follows that the period which I have assigned to the Flight into Egypt is the second April in His life. During the spring-time, rich in flowers and first-fruits, the Holy Travellers are represented as passing across the Philistine plain on the road to Gaza at a distance of about thirty miles from their point of departure. The night is far spent. While the declining moon sheds its last rays on the natural objects in the picture, unearthly light reveals the embodied spirits of the martyred Innocents advancing in procession. The Virgin is seated on a she-ass of the breed now known as the Mecca race, and the foal follows its mother, as is seen to this day in the East. Signal fires—still lit in Syria in time of trouble—are burning on the slope looking down from the tableland. St. Joseph is watching these fires intent on discovering any signs that may present themselves of a movement of soldiery upon the road. Of the trees that enrich the landscape, the nearest ones shelter a water-wheel used for the irrigation of the land. The more remote group clusters round a village, with its few huts visible by the lights that burn within. Having left the colder climate of the high country, then thickly populated and well cultivated, the fugitives have descended into the rich and more balmy atmosphere of the plain. As they advance nearer and nearer to a place of safety they feel the blessed relief of a sense of peace after disturbance and terror.

Book Synopsis States of Decadence by : Guri Barstad
Download or read book States of Decadence written by Guri Barstad and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: States of Decadence is a two volume anthology that focuses on the literary and cultural phenomenon of decadence. Particular attention is given to literature from the end of the 1800s, the fin de siècle; however, the essays presented here are not restricted to this historical period, but draw lines both back in time and forward to our day to illuminate the contradictory multiplicity inherent in decadence. Furthermore, the essays go beyond literary studies, drawing on a number of the tropes and themes of decadence manifested in the arts and culture, such as in music, opera, film, history, and even jewelry design.
