Through an analysis of the international actorness – the inherent characteristics of a subnational entity as an international player – of Yunnan and two other geographically peripheral provinces, Guangdong and Guangxi, the domestic, economic, and legislative circumstances that motivated these provinces to conduct transboundary engagements are determined. The book is based on an extensive field study including interviews with those involved in the implementation of Yunnan’s foreign agenda, representatives from province-owned enterprises, universities and think tanks, and officials and experts from the countries neighboring Yunnan. Acknowledging the role of external geopolitics, the authors analyze the efforts of these border provinces to incentivize neighboring countries to cooperate with them on areas of trade, investment, and nontraditional security. Book excerpt: The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw the turbulent end of China's imperial system, violent revolutionary movements, and the fraught establishment of a republican government. During these decades of reform and revolution, millions of far-flung "overseas Chinese" remained connected to Chinese domestic movements. This book uses rich archival sources and a new network approach to examine how reform and revolution in North American Chinatowns influenced political change in China and the transpacific Chinese diaspora from 1898 to 1918. Historian Zhongping Chen focuses on the transnational activities of Kang Youwei, Sun Yat-sen, and other politicians, especially their mobilization of the Chinese in North America to join reformist or revolutionary parties in patriotic fights for a Western-style constitutional monarchy or republic in China. These new reformist and revolutionary parties, including the first Chinese women's political organization, led transpacific movements against American anti-Chinese racism in 1905 and supported constitutional reform and the Republican Revolution in China around 1911, achieving transpacific expansion through innovative use of cross-cultural political ideologies and intertwined institutional and interpersonal networks. Through network analysis of the origins, interrelations, and influences of Chinese reform and revolution in North America, this book makes a significant contribution to modern Chinese history, Asian American and Asian Canadian history, and Chinese diasporic scholarship.

Book excerpt: Highly contiguous reference genome sequences are a prerequisite for genomics research and for the optimal utilization of plant species. However, whole-genome duplication events and subsequent chromosomal rearrangements and losses shape the complex features and extensive diversity of plant genomes, and hinder their highly contiguous assembly. With the advent of single-molecule, long-read sequencing technologies, such as PacBio High-Fidelity (HiFi) and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), as well as Bionano genomics and high-throughput chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C), many highly complex chromosome-level genomes have been revealed, even with phased haplotypes. These advanced sequencing technologies, coupled with improvements in assembly methods, have greatly improved the quality of the assembled genomes. Transcriptomics and metabolomics are playing an increasingly important role in research into genetic variation and functional genes, and enable their combination with other omics studies. For example, in studies of plant stress resistance, the application of transcriptomics and metabolomics technologies allows comprehensive and dynamic detection of the spatial and temporal changes in plant genes/metabolite expression under stress, enabling functional genes to be “mined” and the regulatory mechanism underlying stress responses to be analyzed, providing a molecular genetic basis for the breeding of stress-resistant varieties.
