Book excerpt: A Shakespeare-loving criminologist investigates a tragic case of murder in a “fast-paced tale that gets both the intellect and the heart racing” (Louise Penny, author of Still Life and Dead Cold). A Halifax criminologist, Rosalind has an unquenchable love of drama. Perhaps that’s why she continues to work for the cranky private investigator McBride. Over the years, their association has led her from one sordid foray to another in the world of crime. But when real-world drama gets to be too much, she escapes into the world of theater. Lately Ros has been helping a company of local actors put on a small production of Hamlet. She finds the poetic language a perfect distraction from her job . . . until uncanny parallels between life and art become too unnerving to ignore. When environmental lawyer Peter King suddenly, his son Daniel suspects murder. As Roz and McBride delve deeper into the case, it becomes all too clear that there are those who will stop at nothing to ensure their foul deeds stay buried.

Book excerpt: Ever wonder what your parents were like before you got to know them? When you were a kid, did you ever long for someone to tell you who you really were? Then meet Preston Stoner. The year is 2004, and he is a somewhat bemused fifty-eight-year-old Nebraskan living in exile on Pioneer Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, when his past abruptly reasserts itself into his life. Orphaned at five and reawakened by memories of death and betrayal often so faint as to be almost nonexistent, this devoted husband and father shares the dilemma of every saint, sinner, wise man, fool, or dullard who has spent the better part of an adult life pretending the early events of one’s childhood doesn’t matter. Bestirred by equal portions of courage and fear, born of love and contempt, this novel invites the reader to come along for the ride as events contrast back and forth between Preston’s inalterable, virtually unknowable childhood past in Beatrice, Nebraska, and his painfully all-too-knowable, somewhat-humdrum, somewhat-chaotic present-day life in Brooklyn.

Vampirology charts the murky waters of the vampire myth – from stories found in many cultures across the globe to our sympathetic pop-culture renditions today – to investigate how a scientific interpretation may shed light on the fears and phenomena of the vampire myth.

Mankind has always had a morbid fascination with poisonous plants. Over the centuries, poisonous plants have been used to remove garden pests—as well as unwanted rivals and deceitful partners. They have also been used for their medicinal qualities, as rather dangerous cosmetics, and even to help seduce a lover when perceived as an aphrodisiac. Some of these and other uses originate in a medieval book that has not yet been translated into English. This book delves into the history of these plants, covering such topics as: How shamans and priests used these plants for their magical attributes, as a means to foretell the future or to commune with the gods How a pot of basil helped to conceal a savage murder The truth about the mysterious mandrake A conundrum written by Jane Austen to entertain her family—the answer to which is one of the plants in this book These stories and many more will enlighten you on these treacherous and peculiar plants, their defensive and deadly traits, the facts behind them, and the folklore that has grown around them.

Book excerpt: The Wages of Virtue is one of the early novels by P. C. Wren. Sir Montague Merline and his platoon get into a bloody combat in Africa and they are all massacred except for one man. Since her husband is presumed dead, Lady Merline remarries, but Montague emerges a couple of years later in some African village, with no memory. After finding out about his wife's new life, he decides not to ruin her happiness and goes off to join French Foreign Legion. The descriptions of Legion garrison life closely match those contained in the autobiographical In the Foreign Legion by ex-legionnaire Edwin Rosen. Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.
