From his days serving the rich and famous as a young man on Fire Island in New York to working his way up the Air Force ladder to become an Air Force flight attendant on the president's plane, this is Howie's amazing story. In an attempt to avoid being drafted into the Army during the Viet Nam War Howie signed up for the Air Force to work in food service. He was counting the days until his time was up when he was offered the chance to work as a flight attendant. He became a world-traveler working on flights with high-ranking military officials and government leaders, including Dr. Henry Kissinger during his famous shuttle diplomacy days. Before he knew it, he was part of the famous 89th Wing and working aboard Air Force One. You feel as if you're riding along on presidential missions and experience the behind-the-scenes life aboard the plane carrying the leader of the free world.

Book excerpt: When framers of the American Constitution debated the document (and form of government) in 1787, they chose not to adopt the British system as they knew its flaws. In 230 years, USA has grown beyond what the framers could have envisioned, but the Constitution has endured. The American President has far less powers than the British PM. British PM William Evert Gladstone had said: “Nowhere is there a man who has so much power with so little to show for it in the way of formal title or prerogative.” British historian Sir Sidney JM Low wrote in 1904: “An English Prime Minister, with his majority secure in parliament, can do what the German Emperor, the American President, and all the Chairmen of all the Committees of the United States’ Congress, cannot do (together).” India was already the world’s largest democracy on August 15, 1947, but, for almost 2½ years, we followed the British Constitution. The 6-member Constitution Drafting Committee, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as Chairman, prepared a draft Constitution. This was debated and 2000+ amendments were moved over two years. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. The committee had several choices in which model to follow. In 1947, USA’s population was about 44% of India, but we still chose to adopt a system from a country which was just 15% our size. ALL BECAUSE OF ONE MAN WHO HAD VERY CAREFULLY READ SIR LOW’S WORDS AND WANTED THAT ABSOLUTE POWER FOR HIMSELF. Has the parliamentary form of government worked for us over the past 68 years?

Book excerpt: A bracing amalgamation of devastating humor and brilliant cultural observation, in which Gabe Hudson fearlessly explores the darker implications of American military power. "Weird, wonderful, and worrisome.” —The Washington Post Book World “Dear Mr. President is a war book like no other. It’s as if Salvador Dali had rewritten All Quiet on the Western Front.” —USA Today Everybody’s Gulf War Syndrome is a little bit different. Or so believes Larry, who returns home from Desert Storm to find his hair gone and his bones rapidly disintegrating. Then there’s Lance Corporal James Laverne of the US Marines, who grows a third ear in Kuwait. And in the audaciously comic novella “Notes from a Bunker Along Highway 8,” a Green Beret deserts his team after seeing a vision of George Washington, only to find a new calling—administering aid to wounded Iraqi civilians; he’s hindered only by the furtive nature of his mission and an unruly band of chimpanzees.

Book excerpt: A man and his son dreamed of America’s freedom, but the dream became a nightmare when they ended up at Guantánamo Bay. Hasan Makari and his son, Najib, both Lebanese nationals, have dreamed of the day they would experience the shining freedom of America. But when they arrive in the US, they are arrested, accused of terrorism, and incarcerated at the Guantánamo Bay Prison Camp in Cuba, all on false charges. Suddenly, they face the nightmare of death by execution. Their only hope is Navy JAG Officer Matt Davis, who has been assigned to the case of his life—to defend the Makaris in court at Guantánamo Bay. Matt believes his clients are innocent, but he faces monumental opposition—not only from powerful federal prosecutors with a huge agenda and an unlimited budget, but also from the woman he loves who, as a fellow JAG officer, has been ordered onto the prosecution team to convict the Makaris. As the drama unfolds in Cuba, Emily Gardner, a top-ranking TSA lawyer, has just received a larger-than-life nomination as General Counsel for the Department of Homeland Security. While preparing for confirmation by the US Senate, she discovers a shocking scheme that will turn her life upside down. Can Emily expose the truth in time to save the lives of those being accused—and escape with her own life? Somewhere between the war-torn plains of Northern Lebanon and the secret torture chamber of Guantánamo Bay lie the keys to justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The 14th Day will have you on the edge of your seat while tugging at your heart strings.” Stefan Adamek, a CIA spy based in Cuba in 1962, has grown weary of the espionage business. Although still yearning for revenge against Communists for killing his father, the loneliness that comes from working as a spy has begun to take its toll. But when he uncovers a plot by anti-Communist rebels to fire a Soviet missile at the U.S. mainland, he knows he must act – even if it means remaining in Cuba and risking his life. Led by a disillusioned former friend of Fidel Castro, the rebels hope to trigger a U.S. invasion, topple Castro’s regime, and install a democratic form of government. The stakes rise when a U-2 spy plane discovers Soviet missile sites under construction in the Cuban countryside, triggering the thirteen days known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. As Cuba’s secret police close in on him, Stefan receives help from an unexpected source: Sara Sanabria, a beautiful, young widow pressured by Castro to support his regime, denounce her late husband, and become his lover. As the Cuban Missile Crisis heads toward war between the two superpowers, will Sara reach Stefan in time to save his life, and will Stefan prevent the rebels from shattering the negotiated peace? The events of the fourteenth day will answer both questions.
