Download or read book Subpar Parks written by Amber Share and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **A New York Times Bestseller!** Based on the wildly popular Instagram account, Subpar Parks features both the greatest hits and brand-new content, all celebrating the incredible beauty and variety of America’s national parks juxtaposed with the clueless and hilarious one-star reviews posted by visitors. Subpar Parks, both on the popular Instagram page and in this humorous, informative, and collectible book, combines two things that seem like they might not work together yet somehow harmonize perfectly: beautiful illustrations and informative, amusing text celebrating each national park paired with the one-star reviews disappointed tourists have left online. Millions of visitors each year enjoy Glacier National Park, but for one visitor, it was simply "Too cold for me!" Another saw the mind-boggling vistas of Bryce Canyon as "Too spiky!" Never mind the person who visited the thermal pools at Yellowstone National Park and left thinking, “Save yourself some money, boil some water at home.” Featuring more than 50 percent new material, the book will include more depth and insight into the most popular parks, such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Acadia National Parks; anecdotes and tips from rangers; and much more about author Amber Share's personal love and connection to the outdoors. Equal parts humor and love for the national parks and the great outdoors, it's the perfect gift for anyone who loves to spend time outside as well as have a good read (and laugh) once they come indoors.

Book Synopsis Yellowstone National Park by : Suzanne Silverthorn
Download or read book Yellowstone National Park written by Suzanne Silverthorn and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Yellowstone is one of America's best known national parks.... Steeped in history, this national treasure is brought to life through the photography of I-Ting Chiang, whose work has been paired with historic postcards to showcase the enduring qualities of America's first national park. Scenes include the parks's famous geysers and mud pots, canyon waterfalls, lakes, valleys, and wildlife, plus the most renowned of all the lodges in the national park system, Old Faithful Inn. Where stagecoaches were once the primary mode of transportation and luxury hotels were built to serve wealthy train travelers, this book shows how the automobile and the park's Grand Loop Road system expanded the park's accessibility and affordability. Here too, the resurgence of the largest free-range buffalo herd is celebrated while paying homage to the U.S. Calvary that restored order in the park after rampant poaching and vandalism."--Jacket.
Book Synopsis Yellowstone National Park by : Lee H. Whittlesey
Download or read book Yellowstone National Park written by Lee H. Whittlesey and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yellowstone National Park is one of the earth's most famous places. Established in 1872 as the world's first national park, it has preserved remarkable natural wonders like Old Faithful Geyser and cultural icons such as Old Faithful Inn. For centuries, it was home to the Shoshone, Crow, Bannock, Blackfeet, and other Indian tribes, but these groups were banished in the 1870s by park promoters who feared that tourists would not visit if American Indians lived there. Almost immediately after its establishment, Yellowstone became the primary destination for tourist travel to the American West following the Civil War. By 1900, it was a vast tourist success, and today it is both a world biosphere preserve and a world heritage site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating new history of Nashville, Tennessee, showcases more than two hundred of the best vintage postcards available.
Book Synopsis Windows into the Earth by : Robert B. Smith
Download or read book Windows into the Earth written by Robert B. Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-25 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of years ago, the North American continent was dragged over the world's largest continental hotspot, a huge column of hot and molten rock rising from the Earth's interior that traced a 50-mile wide, 500-mile-long path northeastward across Idaho. Generating cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and large earthquakes, the hotspot helped lift the Yellowstone Plateau to more than 7,000 feet and pushed the northern Rockies to new heights, forming unusually large glaciers to carve the landscape. It also created the jewel of the U.S. national park system: Yellowstone. Meanwhile, forces stretching apart the western U.S. created the mountainous glory of Grand Teton National Park. These two parks, with their majestic mountains, dazzling geysers, and picturesque hot springs, are windows into the Earth's interior, revealing the violent power of the dynamic processes within. Smith and Siegel offer expert guidance through this awe-inspiring terrain, bringing to life the grandeur of these geologic phenomena as they reveal the forces that have shaped--and continue to shape--the greater Yellowstone-Teton region. Over seventy illustrations--including fifty-two in full color--illuminate the breathtaking beauty of the landscape, while two final chapters provide driving tours of the parks to help visitors enjoy and understand the regions wonders. Fascinating and informative, this book affords us a striking new perspective on Earth's creative forces.

Book Synopsis Railroad Postcards of Yellowstone by : Frank Ferris
Download or read book Railroad Postcards of Yellowstone written by Frank Ferris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fastest way to travel long distances in the beginning of the 20th century was by railroad. Railroad companies competed to attract business and vacationing travellers by advertising in brochures and issuing postcards. The postcards included railroad logos and descriptions of Western adventures that travellers would experience by booking with a particular rail line. The Northern Pacific Railroad and Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad have provided some of the most captivating images of the unique Yellowstone National Park (YNP) hydrologic, geologic, and geothermal features. The Union Pacific Railroad built the full-scale Old Faithful Lodge at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915; the National Park Service data show the YNP attendance more than doubled in that year. Both the Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Route provided high-quality postcards to promote their routes to visit YNP. The Burlington Route and Northern Pacific Railroad included American Indian-related postcards for diversity.
