Book Synopsis A History of Japan’s Government-Business Relationship by : Phyllis Genther
Download or read book A History of Japan’s Government-Business Relationship written by Phyllis Genther and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the economic and political importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship and the extensive attention paid to automotive trade, few American scholars or policy makers are familiar with the history of Japanese government-business relations, either generally or for specific industries such as passenger cars. This book hopefully helps in a small way to fill that gap in our knowledge and, thus, to help strengthen the foundation from which we make public policy decisions about bilateral trade. [ix]
Book Synopsis America's Trade Policy Towards Japan by : John Kunkel
Download or read book America's Trade Policy Towards Japan written by John Kunkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a few years, the United States has gone from worrying about Japan's economic might to worrying about its meltdown. The rise and fall of America's 'results-oriented' trade policy towards Japan captures this turnaround. John Kunkel traces this Japan policy to a crisis in the institutions, laws and norms of the US trade policy regime in the first half of the 1980s. This arose from the erosion of America's post-war international economic dominance (especially vis-à-vis Japan) and the unintended consequences of Reaganomics. The crisis in turn led to the progressive ascendancy of a coalition of 'hardliners' over 'free traders' after 1985. Kunkel combines research in economics, politics and history - including interviews with key policy-makers - to illuminate this important case study of American trade policy. His book offers theoretical insights and practical lessons on the forces shaping US trade policy at the start of the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Modeling Japanese-American Trade by : Peter A. Petri
Download or read book Modeling Japanese-American Trade written by Peter A. Petri and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines, in rigorous, quantitative detail, the structure of trade between Japan and the United States, tracing the evolution of trade interdependence and the causes of its increasing intensity. It also looks at sectoral differences in interdependence--at the patterns behind changes in the composition of trade and the complex factors that determine how individual sectors of each economy respond to economic change in all the others. In the first part, the author designs and estimates a multicountry, multisectoral general equilibrium model. The model is operationalized with careful estimates of the parameters that govern demand, production, and trade in both economies. In the second part, the model is employed to explore various aspects of interdependence and commercial policy. Peter Petri's findings indicate, among other things, that the American and Japanese economies are more closely related than one might judge from the size of their trade. As a result of differences in the structures of the two economies, their interdependence is sharply asymmetric, with economic events in the United States having a greater impact on Japan than vice versa. The study also shows that the roots of bilateral conflict can be traced to structural causes, and suggests that recent structural changes may have increased the incentives for protectionism.
Book Synopsis Japan's Unequal Trade by : Edward J. Lincoln
Download or read book Japan's Unequal Trade written by Edward J. Lincoln and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2001-06-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With all the rapid economic success in Japan, it is easy to forget just how insular the nation has been, and how strikingly different its trading patterns remain from those of other industrialized nations. Japan is moving into an era of greater interaction with the world, but Lincoln contends that this does not mean the United States and other nations can end their pressure on Japan to continue opening its markets. "Now is the time to bring Japan into the fold," Lincoln writes in his introduction. Lincoln focuses on the question of access to Japanese markets, Japan's pattern of trade on imports, and the consequences of large trade and current-account imbalances. He argues against the United States abandoning its free-trade ideal and offers suggestions for applying pressure to encourage greater real access to Japanese markets.

Download or read book Japan's Quest for Comprehensive Security written by J. W. M Chapman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the key elements which together comprise a viable national security policy. The emergence of the concept of 'comprehensive security' in Japanese national security policy led to the creation of a Ministerial Council on Comprehensive Security. This body was expected to provide the impetus for a more co-ordinated, comprehensive and rational approach to Japan's security needs than was evident in the past. First published in 1983, this title is part of the Bloomsbury Academic Collections series.

Book Synopsis The Japan-US Trade Friction Dilemma by : Karen M Holgerson
Download or read book The Japan-US Trade Friction Dilemma written by Karen M Holgerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this study of Japan-U.S. trade friction and the role perceptual differences have played in its evolution differs from its predecessors in key ways. First, it is interdisciplinary, drawing on the research of anthropologists, area specialists, intercultural communication specialists, linguists, sociologists, and social psychologists as well as that of political scientists and economists. Second, it both identifies and quantifies perceptual differences between Japanese and American opinion leaders regarding the large bilateral trade imbalances, the bilateral relationship, and national negotiating styles. Third, original data were collected from completed questionnaires sent to 230 American and 230 Japanese opinion leaders from business, government, academia, and the media, who had been involved in some way with the rice, automotive, or semiconductor sectors. Fourth, the three case studies of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction are representative of three differing mixes of trade friction causal factors and perceptual dynamics. Finally, based on the findings of this study, modest suggestions are offered on how the bilateral perceptual gap might be narrowed and trade friction diminished so that the structural and sectoral problems might more effectively be addressed. This book should be of interest to scholars, government officials, and business leaders in Japan, the United States, and other countries in the global community who are interested in bilateral relations, international economic and political affairs, and trade friction. It should also be of special interest to social psychologists and cross-cultural scholars and researchers.
