Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to research how a school district can benefit by making a transition from a traditional nine-month calendar to a year-round calendar. The project provides information to the reader on academic, financial, and social aspects of a change to a year-round school calendar. The pros and cons of all stakeholders is discussed as well as best practices for starting a transition for a traditional calendar to a year-round calendar. Research shows that increased student achievement can result from the use of a year-round school calendar. The goal of public education is to provide the best education possible for students. As educators in the twenty first century, it is important to start thinking differently in order to provide the best education possible. Good habits are developed through repetition of good practices. If learning is to be a life-long process, it would be more beneficial to have year-round schooling.
