Book excerpt: Child/adolescent development and behavior have been a traditional "concern" of prima ry health care providers. However, it was not until the mid-1960s that attempts were made to consolidate developmental-behavioral issues into an identifiably distinct fund of medi cal knowledge. During the ensuing two decades, developmental-behavioral pediatrics was recognized as a clinical and research subspecialty, within the framework of compre hensive health care for children. The influence of public advocacy groups, topic-dedicated journals, national professional specialty societies, subject-related continuing education programs, and federal legislation (PL94-142) has served to crystallize developmen tal-behavioral pediatrics as a specialized field of study. As a consequence, during the past ten years significant modifications have restructured medical student and pediatric resi dent education, providing an emphasis on developmental-behavioral issues. The focus on neurodevelopmental, educational, and psychosocial issues reflects changing priorities in traditional health care for children. The postgraduate training of pediatric fellows, in two and three-year training programs, was initiated to accommodate professional manpower needs in both academic and practice settings. Many of the problems in childhood development and behavior frequently span the traditional areas of child neurology, child psychiatry, and general pediatrics. As a result there has been some confusion in demarcating professional responsibilities in diagnosis and management, as well as poorly defined terminology and classification schemas. With the birth of developmental pediatrics as a pediatric specialty, a more cohesive fund of knowledge has been accumulated and more meaningful strategies have been designed for prevention, diagnosis, and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fetal and Neonatal Pathology presents in one volume an account of the pathological findings encountered when examining fetuses from the second and third trimester of pregnancy as well as in neonatal death. It provides essential clinical and physiological information and discusses the pathogenesis of pathological findings as a guide to the formulation of the appropriate method of investigation. The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with examination of the products of conception after termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly. The range of pathological abnormality is described and its relevance discussed. Attention is drawn to the differences in pathological findings in specific conditions between the second and third trimester. The second part of the book is system orientated and describes and illustrates those pathological problems which are likely to be encountered in the fetus and neonate. Each chapter is introduced by a concise account of the development of that system. Where relevant there is also discussion of changes at birth as well as changes in normal function that may occur during the neonatal period. Fetal and Neonatal Pathology is primarily written for the morbid anatomist and histopathologist. It also provides a valuable source of reference for obstetricians, neonatologists and paediatricians. Its value as a working tool of reference is enhanced by effective cross-referencing between sections by both chapter and page number. 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this volume was published in 1976, interest in the problem of intelligence in general and infant intelligence in particu lar has continued to grow. The response to the first edition was hearten ing: many readers found it a source of information for the diverse areas of study in infant intelligence. Because of the success of that volume, we have decided to issue a second edition. This edition is in many ways both similar to and different from the first. Its similarity lies in the fact that many of the themes and many of the contributors remain the same. Its difference can be found in the updating of old chapters and the addition of several new ones. Taken together, the chapters present a rounded picture of the cen tral issues in infant intelligence. Because the aim was to present a picture of the issues, no attempt, other than the selection of authors and themes, can be made to integrate these chapters into a single coherent whole. In large part, this reflects the diversity of study found in the area of early intellectual behavior. Rather than having a comprehensive theo ry of infant intelligence, the field abounds with a series of critical ques tions. To unite these chapters into some coherence, it will be necessary to articulate what these issues might be. Five major themes run through out the field of infant intelligence and thus through this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurocutaneous Diseases is a systematic presentation limited to diseases that affect both of the nervous system and skin of humans. Neurologists and dermatologist will find knowledge of these diseases of real clinical value. Many of the diseases described in these pages do not affect the skin and nervous system simultaneously. Many of these diseases, mostly not well understood, may stimulate new lines of scientific inquiry, for understanding of a pathologic change in easily accessible dermal cells that promises to clarify a more recondite brain disease. This book is organized into five main parts. The chapters describe different types of diseases including those with autosomal dominant inheritance, those with autosomal recessive inheritance, those with x-linked inheritance, those with unknown or multiple inheritance and congenital and vascular anomalies. These diseases include neurofibromatosis, Cockayne's Syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy, albinism and neurocutaneous melanosis. This book will be of interest to dermatologists and neurologists.

Organized by anatomic site of disease rather than by infectious agent, the book takes a problem-oriented approach to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious syndromes. It guides clinicians step by step through the process of classifying the illness, developing a differential diagnosis, establishing the definitive diagnosis, treating the patient, and anticipating and recognizing complications and life-threatening emergencies. This Fourth Edition has a greater focus on treatment and includes new chapters on HIV infection and AIDS and congenital immunodeficiency syndromes.
