Download or read book Projecting A Nation written by Jubin Hu and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major work on pre-1949 Chinese cinema in English. As such, it represents a major contribution to existing discussions of both Chinese cinema and national cinema, and is an indispensible basic resource for scholars interested in Chinese film history. The book analyses the wide variety of conceptions of "Chinese national cinema" between the early years of the 20th century and 1949, and contrasts these to conceptions of national cinema in Europe and China. After years of exhausting primary historical research, the author has been able to bring to light sources hitherto not widely available. The author argues that questions and debates about the status and meaning of the "national" in "Chinese national cinema" are central to any consideration of cinema during this period, and addresses the issue of Chinese nationalism as part of a complex history of cinema within the early modern Chinese nation.

Book Synopsis The Art of Impermanence by : Adriana Proser
Download or read book The Art of Impermanence written by Adriana Proser and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book includes works ranging in date from the Final Jomon period (ca. 1000-300 B.C.E.) to the 20th century. This dazzling range of art reflects the broad, yet nuanced ways that the notion of impermanence manifests itself in the arts of Japan. That the world is constantly in flux is a basic tenant of Japanese philosophy and recognizing the aesthetic or symbolic suggestion of ephemerality is key to the appreciation of much of Japan's artistic production. In Buddhism, which has had a major impact on Japanese culture, the concept of impermanence is closely related to the desire to escape the cycle of rebirth and death through enlightenment. During the Heian period (794-1185), courtiers regularly incorporated allusions to impermanence into literature and other arts. By the sixteenth century, tea masters commonly organized Chanoyu, the Way of Tea, to stimulate participants to tap into feelings of wistfulness associated with the transience of life.
