Book Synopsis The National Lottery and Its Regulation by : Andrew Douglas
Download or read book The National Lottery and Its Regulation written by Andrew Douglas and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of a National Lottery into the United Kingdom created a unique regulatory challenge. The response to this challenge is embodied in arrangements informed not by international precedent but by privatisation policies pursued by successive Conservative governments between 1979 and 1994 when the Lottery was launched. Dr Douglas assesses the success of the Lottery's regulation against the objectives set out in the enabling legislation: the upholding of the Lottery's propriety, the protection of the players, and the maximising of the funds to be applied to the Good Causes. Lessons learned during the initial Licence period will inform the new seven year Licence from October 2001, the operator chosen for the new term, and in particular the role of the profit motive within the new arrangements.

Book excerpt: The extent to which government should be involved with regulation in the private sector is much debated. More fundamentally, one might ask exactly what is regulation, why is it needed, how is it formulated, and how is it enforced? These questions are especially relevant at a time in United States history when federal involvement in spheres traditionally left to individuals is being widely debated on all sides of the political spectrum.
Book Synopsis Ethnicity and Territory in the Former Soviet Union by : Dr James Hughes
Download or read book Ethnicity and Territory in the Former Soviet Union written by Dr James Hughes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the Soviet empire in 1991 removed a decades-long system of successful control of potential ethnic and regional conflict . The result was the eruption of numerous conflicts over state-building, some of which degenerated into violence and some of which were resolved or prevented by strategies of accommodation. This volume explores the common trends and differences in the responses of the new post-Soviet states to the problems of state-building in ethnically and regionally divided societies, focusing on the impact of ethnic and regional conflicts on post-communist transition and institutional development. The book will be essential reading for specialists and students alike who are interested in conflict regulation and post-Soviet politics.

Book Synopsis Rethinking the Union of Europe Post-Crisis by : Giandomenico Majone
Download or read book Rethinking the Union of Europe Post-Crisis written by Giandomenico Majone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new book, Giandomenico Majone examines the crucial but often overlooked distinction between the general aim of European integration and the specific method of integration employed in designing an (ill-considered) monetary union. Written with the author's customary insight and precision, this highly topical and provocative book reviews the Union's leaders' tradition of pushing through ambitious projects without considering the serious hurdles that lie in the way of their success. Regional and European integration topics are discussed, including credibility of commitments, delegation of powers, bargaining and influence activities, adverse selection and moral hazard. The author also offers a deeper examination of the specific crisis of monetary integration, arguing that it might be more effectively achieved with inter-jurisdictional competition and suggesting how integration should be managed in the globalized world.
