Download or read book The Future of Law and Economics written by Guido Calabresi and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a concise, compelling argument, one of the founders and most influential advocates of the law and economics movement divides the subject into two separate areas, which he identifies with Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. The first, Benthamite, strain, “economic analysis of law,” examines the legal system in the light of economic theory and shows how economics might render law more effective. The second strain, law and economics, gives equal status to law, and explores how the more realistic, less theoretical discipline of law can lead to improvements in economic theory. It is the latter approach that Judge Calabresi advocates, in a series of eloquent, thoughtful essays that will appeal to students and scholars alike.

This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the credit for this open-access book should go to Bilal Kargi, the Editor of KSP Journals and KSP Books. KSP Journals has published several of my articles on economics and diplomatic history, including in the Journal of Economics Library, the Journal of Economics and Political Economy, the Journal of Social and Administrative Sciences and the Journal of Economic and Social Thought. Bilal asked me in late summer 2021 if I would put these articles and others that had appeared elsewhere, or that I might want to publish for the first time, into a collection. I told him I would consider it – noting that past articles would need revisions if they were to appear again, and to have a longer shelf-life. I heard back from him within a day or two advising me that he was “waiting impatiently” for my Word updates. The collection here also includes “A different Cold War? The European Settlement of 1963 and Aftermath” and “Inflation Policy, 2022: Background,” both of which I have prepared during the last few months.

Book Synopsis The Work of the University by : Richard C. Levin
Download or read book The Work of the University written by Richard C. Levin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-11 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging collection of speeches and essays, published on the occasion of Richard C. Levin's tenth anniversary as president of Yale University, reflects both the range of his intellectual passions and the depth of his insight into the work of the university. By turns analytical, reflective, and exhortatory, Levin explores what it means to be a world-class university, how the university intersects with local and global communities, and why a liberal education matters. He offers personal recollections of schools, teachers, and traditions of particular importance in his own life. And, returning to his roots as a professor of economics, he discusses the competitiveness of American industry and the relations between the market economy and American democracy. Throughout these writings Levin illuminates and inspires. Always his affection for the university shines through. Whether greeting incoming freshmen, meditating on September 11, remembering an intellectual hero, saluting graduating seniors, addressing the League of Women Voters, or celebrating Yale's Tercentennial, Levin, by example, shows what a liberal education can achieve.

Book Synopsis Money, Trade, and Competition by : Herbert Giersch
Download or read book Money, Trade, and Competition written by Herbert Giersch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 1, 1990, Egon Sohmen would have reached the age of 60 had he not suffered from a fatal illness. It demanded his death at the early age of 46. If he were still with us, he would playa prominent role in the current debate on monetary arrangements and on allocation theory, perhaps in cluding environmental issues and urban economics. His contributions are well remembered by his colleagues and friends, by his former students, and by many in the economics profession on both sides of the Atlantic. In extrapolating his great achievements as a scholar and teacher beyond the time of his death, one is inclined to suppose that Egon Sohmen's name would figure high on many a list of candidates for honors and awards in the field of international economics. For the reconstruction of economics in the German language area Egon Sohmen was invaluable. Born in Linz (Austria), he studied in Vienna at the Business School (Hochschule fUr Welthandel, now Wirtscha!tsuniversitiit), then went to the US as a Fulbright scholar (1953), returned to Europe to take his doctorate in Tiibingen, Germany, (1954) and crossed the Atlantic again to teach at MIT (1955-58) where he obtained a Ph. D. (1958) under Charlie Kindleberger. He might have stayed permanently in the US, con tinuing a career that he started as Assistant Professor at Yale University (1958-61), if the US visa provisions had been applied in a more liberal fashion.

Book Synopsis Policies for Prosperity by : James Tobin
Download or read book Policies for Prosperity written by James Tobin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these timely essays, Nobel prizewinning economist James Tobin shows how Keynesian economics offers corrective treatment for the economic ailments we have faced under the Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations.Essays in the first part of the book focus on theory and policy in Keynesian economics, particularly on the modern anti-Keynesian movements of the 1970s and 1980s. Tobin's writings on the events, controversies, doctrines, and policies of the Reagan era make up the book's second section, Essays in part three continue to discuss the Reagan revolution, focusing on fiscal policies and presenting some general macroeconomic principles that can be invoked to remedy the situation; those in part four are concerned more specifically with the conduct of monetary policy. A fifth section addresses inflation stagflation, and unemployment, recommending income policies that Tobin believes must become a "permanent tool of macroeconomic policy." The book concludes with several essays on various aspects of political economy, including a timely reminder that economic policies should serve ethical values.James Tobin, who received the Nobel prize in economics in 1981, is Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale.
