In 1966, the total irrigated land in Washington was 1,495,000 acres of which 505,000 acres (34%) is in the Yakima Basin. In contrast, approximately 43 percent of the value of the agricultural production from irrigated land is from the Yakima Basin. The value of production in the basin average $385 per acre, with a range of $67 to $834 per acre. This high yield of agricultural production has not been accomplished without some loss to other uses of the water resources of the basin. The pre-1890 anadromous fish runs have been estimated to be 515,500 fish per year while the present runs average 20,100 fish per year - - a loss of 96 percent - - and even the present runs are considered to be endangered. The quality of the waters of the Yakima River has been modified by irrigated agriculture by an increase in nutrient load (nitrogen and phosphorus), total dissolved salts, and sediment... The purpose of this report is to review the status of water resources management planning in the Yakima Basin and to identify the nature of some of the specific water resources management problems in the basin...
