Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dream of a Slave Son Slave Son tells much about the early Africans and their slave ancestors. In the novel, a child is born and later at the age of eighteen is captured into slavery to continue life in the new world as a slave. Before his birth, the author narrates the processes to include every aspect of the African social fabric and culture based on the rules and regulations their ancestors instructed. A family among the Akans of Ghana is used as a base to tell the story, which is almost true of every family in Africa. Most African families emigrated due to family disputes, lack of procreation in marriage, puberty rituals before a girl could be given to marriage, and the rule by elders, chiefs, and queen mothers. The life of the ancestors before the slave trade is still practiced today by many cultures in Africa today. On the contrary, the African prince, who was shipped to the plantations in the New World, lived a horrible life as a slave under his owner who gave him his name. The type of life the slaves lived before emancipation and immediately after emancipation is addressed in Slave Son to educate the readers, especially those in the nonslave-holding countries to be more aware of what the African ancestors endured as slaves. By reading Slave Son, people of African descent would understand and respect each other as people of the same blood belonging to the same ancestry tree. ?

" -- Research in African Literatures "I would recommend Speaking for the Chief not only to students of West African culture, by whom it should be greatly welcomed, but also to anyone intersted in issues surrounding specific genres of discourse in relation to cultural organization." -- Journal of American Folklore "Drawing on the interdisciplinary modes of sociolinguistics, political anthropology, and the ethnography of speech, Yankah allows the reader to hear a little-known and even less studied 'voice' integral to Akan chiefly power. This book deserves the serious attention of Akan and Africanist scholars alike." -- Choice "... an unprecedented opportunity to understand West African oratory from the point of view of a native Akan speaker who is also a gifted linguist and ethnographer.... [Yankah] shows with elegance the connections between verbal strategies and the cultural organization of West African social systems." -- Alessandro Duranti "This study is clearly important in ethnographic terms... But it equally throws new light on more general aspects of verbal and political processes.... will stimulate both specialists and students far beyond the confines of its specific ethnographic setting." -- American Anthropologist "... an immensely valuable book which deserves a wide and appreciative readership." -- Journal of African History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and popular epic honors the legendary warrior prince of Kaabu and Mandinka cultural hero, Kelefaa Saane. A standard of the griot repertoire, the epic of Kelefaa Saane is customarily taught to young performers at the beginning of their careers. Sirifo Camara's masterful recitation was recorded in Dakar in 1987. It has been transcribed in Mandinka and is translated into English here for the first time. The epic, as it describes Kelefaa's life and exploits, relates what it means to be Mandinka. Kelefaa's extraordinary prowess and virtue derive from the political, social, moral, and theological founding myths of the Mandinka people. This beautiful and engaging performance provides a unique perspective on the intellectual and literary heritage of West Africa.

Book excerpt: This is a riveting triple murder story shrouded in mystery, suspense and traditional intrigue. The hero, Ohemeng, was a catechist of the Methodist Church and the headteacher of the local school at Nkwantapon, a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He was married to the queenmother of the town. His bid to develop the town and reform the custom and practices was vehemently opposed by the elders and the fetish priest. The bitter power struggle that ensued culminated in his murder and that of his daughter. The sole witness to Ohemengs murder was also killed. The story is woven around a labyrinth of cultural practices that are unique to the famous Asante tribe. It probes deeper into the conflict between Christianity and traditional African religion. It reaches its climax with the eventual triumph of Good over Evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A wonderfully evocative compilation of seven life histories from Kumasi, Ghana, of women Gracia Clark encountered in the course of a lifetime of fieldwork.” —African Studies Review In these lively life stories, women market traders from Ghana comment on changing social and economic times and on reasons for their prosperity or decline in fortunes. Gracia Clark shows that market women are intimately connected with economic policy on a global scale. Many work at the intersection of sophisticated networks of transnational commerce and migration. They have dramatic memories of independence and the growth of their new nation, including political rivalries, price controls, and violent raids on the market. The experiences of these women give substance to their reflections on globalization, capital accumulation, colonialism, technological change, environmental degradation, teenage pregnancy, marriage, children, changing gender roles, and spirituality. Clark’s commentary illuminates the complex historical and cultural setting of these deeply revealing lives. “Shows, in direct speech, how family, kinship, marriage and age/generation work together in a daily life which is shaped by political, demographic, cultural, and wholly accidental change in people’s circumstances.” —Jane Guyer, Johns Hopkins University “Overall, this is an excellent book: it will be useful in undergraduate teaching and makes an important contribution to our understanding of the richness and variety of women’s lives in West Africa.” —Journal of Africa “Clark . . . offers intriguing insights into the lives of seven Akan women traders . . . Recommended.” —Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asante Court Music and Verbal Arts in Ghana is a comprehensive portrait of Asante court musical arts. Weaving together historical narratives with analyses of texts performed on drums, ivory trumpets, and a cane flute, the book includes a critical assembly of ancient song texts, the poetry of bards (kwadwom), and referential poetry performed by members of the constabulary (apae). The focus is on the intersections between lived experience, music, and values, and refers to musical examples drawn from court ceremonies, rituals, festivals, as well as casual performances elicited in the course of fieldwork. For the Asante, the performing arts are complex sites for recording and storing personal experiences, and they have done so for centuries with remarkable consistency and self-consciousness. This book draws on archaeological, archival, historical, ethnographical and analytical sources to craft a view of the Asante experience as manifested in its musical and allied arts. Its goal is to privilege the voices of the Asante and how they express their history, religious philosophy, social values, economic, and political experiences through the musical and allied arts. The author’s theoretical formulation includes the concept of value, referring to ideas, worldview concepts, beliefs, and social relationships that inform musical practices and choices in Asante.
