Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows someone who's sick or suffering. Yet when a friend or relative is under duress many of us feel uncertain about how to cope. Throughout her recent bout with breast cancer, Letty Cottin Pogrebin became fascinated by her friends' and family's diverse reactions to her and her illness: how awkwardly some of them behaved; how some misspoke or misinterpreted her needs; and how wonderful it was when people read her right. She began talking to her fellow patients and dozens of other veterans of serious illness, seeking to discover what sick people wished their friends knew about how best to comfort, help, and even simply talk to them. Now Pogrebin has distilled their collective stories and opinions into this wide-ranging compendium of pragmatic guidance and usable wisdom. Her advice is always infused with sensitivity, warmth, and humor. It is embedded in candid stories from her own and others' journeys, and their sometimes imperfect interactions with well-meaning friends. How to Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick is an invaluable guidebook for anyone hoping to rise to the challenges of this most important and demanding passage of friendship.

Fearing that England will support the Confederate cause, President Lincoln sends Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy Adams, to London. But when Charles arrives, accompanied by his son Henry, he discovers that the English are already building warships for the South. As Charles embarks on a high-stakes game of espionage and diplomacy, Henry reconnects with his college friend Baxter Sams, a Southerner who has fallen in love with Englishwoman Julia Birch. Julia’s family reviles Americans, leaving Baxter torn between his love for Julia, his friendship with Henry, and his obligations to his own family, who entreat him to run medical supplies across the blockade to help the Confederacy. Book excerpt: WEB LOG Blog. New word. Old usage. You've been 'blogging' for years without the 'interweb', even if you didn't realise it. Blog is derived from 'Web Log'. Blogging is recording comments or opinions on facts of the day, and placing it (posting) on social media outlets for all to see. It is like keeping a public diary, which is what Rex and Katie have done singly and together over the years. "Life's a Blog" is the sixth dive into those diaries and the resultant stories, all based on fact, are an eclectic mix of memoir, travel, opinion and everyday living. Some are told with humour in verse. In some, fact may have been embellished a tiny bit. Join them on their journey. Enjoy the foibles of the people they come across. Marvel at the way 'the other lot' live life, love life and worry about life at the same time. And laugh out loud as you do! There might be a tear on one page, a smile on the next, then a frown, a laugh, some concern and an understanding that there is a sole universe for every single person on this planet.

Book excerpt: Like a photo that captures a moment, I am sharing moments of my life that highlight and explain how love exists in every detail of your life. Love is glamorised, used, abused, and sold. Love is all you need and all you have. Understanding love makes your life unique. You are love. How love is handled creates the story. This insightful book will bring you understanding of love, sex, and relationships. Time runs fast so we end up living on empty. You have more control than you think if you stop what you are doing and observe. Life can run away with us. My life started out in my search for love and has taken me to where I am now. I didn’t stop when I found my self- love. I didn’t stop when I shared my love. I didn’t stop when I had everything that I needed in my life. I felt, what is the point in knowing all this knowledge if I don’t share it? This is why I took ten years out of my life to gather all this wisdom and write it over five books so that I could share it with you. I didn’t share it because I wanted to make money. I didn’t share it to be a celebrity. I shared it because I love you all and want you to have access to 100 percent of you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George C. Zidbeck is the author of a six-volume collection of stories focusing on family dysfunction as a result of parental alcoholismcreative fiction based on the true events of his life. In Observations and Reflections of a Country Squire, Zidbeck recounts his life story and considers the lasting effects of his early years on the rest of his life. After spending those early years in the American Canal Zone in Panama occasionally getting into trouble, he found himself moving to California with his mother and siblings in an attempt to start a new life after his father left to join the Merchant Marines. As a teenager, Zidbeck continued to learn some things the hard way when it came to growing up, enlisting in the US Army at the age of seventeen. He served during the Korean War, was hospitalized for hepatitis, and was then honorably discharged in October 1952, thus beginning his life as a free man in Long Beach, California. Thereafter his life required constant adjustment from his earlier ways, presenting challenges of paying the bills, finding love, and trying to decide what he truly wanted for his future. In this memoir, one man offers a candid description and exploration of the events of his life, reflecting on the many changes and bumps in the road over the years.

This book was released on 2005-11-08 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of what really happens when battling a very serious disease, in this case leukemia. It tells about the human reaction of the author and his wife when told by an oncologist, Mr. Rennie, you have prolymphocytic leukemia, and then being told on a cancer telephone hot-line that you may have only three months to live. It translates, in human, detailed, non-medical terms, such things as the hours spent in leather recliners receiving IVs of chemotherapy and other drugs too numerous to count, getting stuck with needles ten times to find a vein, sometimes confounding interactions with doctors, nurses, and insurance companies, and nearly shaking to death one morning in the leather recliner. It also tells some funny stories like Miss Blabbermouth in the surgeons waiting room, and the time the author mooned an oncologist. It also exposes the hopefully outdated poor bastard with cancer syndrome. Finally, it totals up some interesting things such as number of needle sticks, hours in an IV chair, CT and PET scans, bone marrow extractions, and the amount of money that the disease has cost so farbilled versus paid. It is also a legacy book in that it tells many of the unforgettable lessons learned while growing up in a blue-collar, sports-minded neighborhood in the guts of Philadelphia. It tells about a dad with two very separate and distinct personalities, one a very bad drunk dad and one an outstanding good dad, and a perfect mother loving to the very end. It outlines the authors two older brothers and two younger sisters and their important roles in the family, a strong one to this day, all of whom volunteered to be stem-cell donors. It describes the authors wifes warmth, understanding and stoic battle alongside of her husband. Above all, this is a good news book, one which is intended to inform as well as bring a few knowledgeable smiles to those who have been through similar experiences, and even bigger smiles to those who havent.

Book excerpt: “Hot sex, looking good, scoring journalistic triumphs . . . nothing made Alyssa love herself enough until she learned to cook. There's a racy plot and a surprising moral in this intimate and delicious book.” --Gael Greene, creator of Insatiable-Critic.com and author of Insatiable: Tales from a Life of Delicious Excess Apron Anxiety is the hilarious and heartfelt memoir of quintessential city girl Alyssa Shelasky and her crazy, complicated love affair with...the kitchen. Three months into a relationship with her TV-chef crush, celebrity journalist Alyssa Shelasky left her highly social life in New York City to live with him in D.C. But what followed was no fairy tale: Chef hours are tough on a relationship. Surrounded by foodies yet unable to make a cup of tea, she was displaced and discouraged. Motivated at first by self-preservation rather than culinary passion, Shelasky embarked on a journey to master the kitchen, and she created the blog Apron Anxiety (ApronAnxiety.com) to share her stories. This is a memoir (with recipes) about learning to cook, the ups and downs of love, and entering the world of food full throttle. Readers will delight in her infectious voice as she dishes on everything from the sexy chef scene to the unexpected inner calm of tying on an apron.
