Book Synopsis Introduction to Forest and Shade Tree Insects by : Bozzano G Luisa
Download or read book Introduction to Forest and Shade Tree Insects written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehenisive text approaches the subject from an ecological/evolutionary biological perspective. The assumption is that one cannot study forest insects without understanding the dynamics of the relationship between an insect and its host plant. This relationship includes knowing what factors control forest insect populations such as food, food quality, tree vigor, host selection, and symbiotic relationships. The authors also discuss tree-injuring insects from the perspective of their influence on tree physiology and growth as well as economic and commercial effects. The book represents a "modern" approach to the topic of forest and shade tree insects; is well-illustrated; and includes a comprehensive primary reference list.

Book Synopsis Physiological ecology of plants of the wet tropics by : Ernesto Medina
Download or read book Physiological ecology of plants of the wet tropics written by Ernesto Medina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the results of a Symposium on the physiological ecology of plants of the lowland wet tropics held in Mexico in June 1983 organized by the Instituto de Biologla of the National University of M"exico (U. N . A. M. ), and sponsored by UNAM, CONACYT, NSF and UNESCO (CIET). A workshop portion of the Symposium was held at the tropical research station at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz. This Symposium originated in response to the increasing interest in the physiological ecology of tropical plants, because of the potential. of this field to provide a basic understanding of functioning of tropical plant communities. The study of physiological ecology of tropical plants has been delayed in some cases by the lack of conceptual framework, but also by the absence of appropriate instrumentation and techniques with which to conduct precise measurements under high temperature, high humidity field conditions. Hypotheses and concepts of the physiological ecology of tropical plants have been based mainly on observational data and the analysis of growth forms and leaf anatomf. The early work of A. F. W. Schimper and o. Stocker in Asia, and the extensive surveys made by H. Walter on the osmotic potentials of plants in the tropics and subtropics, constituted, until relatively recently, the only available information on the water and carbon relations of tropical plants.

Book Synopsis Xylem Monoterpenes of Some Hard Pines of Western North America by : Richard Harrison Smith
Download or read book Xylem Monoterpenes of Some Hard Pines of Western North America written by Richard Harrison Smith and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monoterpene composition was studied in a number of hard pine species and results were compared with earlier work. (I) Intratree measurements showed strong constancy of composition in both single-stemmed and forked trees of ponderosa, Jeffrey, Coulter, and Jeffrey x ponderosa pines. In grafts of these and other pines, the scion influenced the root stock, but not the reverse. (2) Large intcrtree variation in composition was found in a small sample of seven hard pines native to Mexico; the value of monoterpenes in clarifying taxonomy of these pines remains uncertain. (3) An 80-tree plot of ponderosa is adequate to determine average monoterpene composition. For the best estimate of the kinds and abundance of types of composition, a 350-tree plot is needed. Short-column chromatographic analysis is acceptably accurate for rapid classification of a large number of samples.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms and Deployment of Resistance in Trees to Insects by : Michael R. Wagner
Download or read book Mechanisms and Deployment of Resistance in Trees to Insects written by Michael R. Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanisms and Deployment of Resistance in Trees to Insects is a worldwide synthesis of tree resistance to insects. The contributions are by senior scientists and represent all the major forested regions of the world. The book constitutes a comprehensive treatment of the state of our knowledge on patterns of resistance by insect guilds and how this knowledge can be deployed to achieve the management of damaging forest insects. This book will serve as an essential reference book for all researchers and practitioners attempting to manage forest pests using genetic resistance.
