Book Synopsis Letters and Documents by : Søren Kierkegaard
Download or read book Letters and Documents written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first English translation of all the known correspondence to and from S ren Kierkegaard, including a number of his letters in draft form and papers pertaining to his life and death. These fascinating documents offer new access to the character and lifework of the gifted philosopher, theologian, and psychologist. Kierkegaard speaks often and openly about his desire to correspond, and the resulting desire to write for a greater audience. He consciously recognizes letter-writing as an opportunity to practice composition. Unlike most correspondence, Kierkegaard's letters expressly "do not require a reply"--he insists on this as a principle, while he clearly and earnestly yearns for a response to his efforts. Among his other principles are purposefulness, directness, and the equality of a letter to a visit with a friend (Kierkegaard preferred the former to the latter). Perhaps more than anything else in print, Kierkegaard's Letters and Documents reveal his love affair with the written word.

Book Synopsis Selected Letters by : Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Download or read book Selected Letters written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coleridge was an outstanding letter-writer, but until now readers were forced to choose between the limited selection given in anthologies, and the six volumes of the standard edition. This volume contains the best of Coleridge's published letters, concentrating on those of literary and biographical interest and linking them wherever necessary with explanatory passages to create a sense of continuous narration. Jackson has included letters from every phase of Coleridge's career, revealing his complex personality in evolution. These vivid and intimate letters also record the progress of his association with Southey and Wordsworth, and his struggle against addiction to opium. Useful supplementary material includes a chronology of Coleridge's life, brief biographies of the main correspondents as well as the people they mention in their letters, and translations of foreign phrases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Handy is one of the giants of contemporary thought. His books on management – including Understanding Organizations and Gods of Management – have changed the way we view business. His work on broader issues and trends – such as Beyond Certainty and The Second Curve – has changed the way we view society. In his new book, Handy builds on a life's work to glimpse into the future and see what challenges and opportunities the next generation faces. How will people cope with change in a world where the old certainties no longer apply? What goals will and should they set themselves? How will they find purpose and fulfilment in their lives? Clear-eyed and optimistic by turns, he sets out the questions that everyone needs to ask themselves, and points us in the direction of the answers.

Book Synopsis Letters from Illinois by : Morris Birkbeck
Download or read book Letters from Illinois written by Morris Birkbeck and published by . This book was released on 1818 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of these Letters were written to my intimate friends; others are in reply to applications made to me by entire strangers, for advice or information, some directing their inquiries to one point, and some to another. In answering, I generally kept pretty much to the tenor of the questions, as there would have been no end of the labour of communicating to every one, separately, information on every topic; yet, to some or other of my correspondents, I have had occasion to touch on most subjects interesting to an emigrant. This consideration has induced me to publish the Letters, in the hope that, as a collection, they may be useful to others, as well as to the individuals to whom they were severally addressed. --
