Book excerpt: This book is a great general guide to all the skiing areas in the Alps. Better than any other book I looked at. One bone to pick: It doesn't include Verbier, Switzerland. The authors had to cut the book off somewhere, I guess. The book is paperback and small -- easy to carry with you while you travel. Since I was unfamiliar with the Alps, I referred to it often on my ski trip to Switzerland and France. It gave the perfect amount of background info to each location and then had good, concise sections re: where to eat, where to party and where to stay. Bravo to the authors for obviously putting effort into creating an easy-to-read, concise and informative resource. -- Rahmit Olsen (Amazon reviewer). An avid skier and hiker, the author has explored terrain ranging from Switzerland's Matterhorn to South Korea's Muju Mountain. The author of more than 800 travel features, hotel reviews and destination guides, she shares her vast knowledge of ski and adventure travel in the Alps and Europe. --Ingram Advance Magazine. As portable as they are helpful and heavily illustrated as well, the volumes in this series remain very reliable in making certain that adventure is a major ingredient of your trip. --Booklist. Designed to be used while you re on the go, Hunter's Pocket Adventures fit in your pocket with ease and make the perfect take-along reference. They contain all the practical travel information you need - places to stay and eat, tourist information resources, travel advice, emergency contacts and more - plus condensed sections on history and geography that give you good background knowledge of the destination. The authors are fascinated with the destination and their passion comes across in the text, which is lively, revealing and a pleasure to read. Sidebars highlight unusual facts and tell of local legends, adding to your travel experience. Detailed town and regional maps make planning day-trips or city tours easy. Adventures covered range from town sightseeing tours and nature watching to sea kayaking and organized jungle excursions. Travelers looking for a more relaxed vacation may want to sign up for language classes or take a course on traditional regional cooking - these cultural adventures will introduce you to the people and afford you a truly unique travel experience. Maps and photos throughout.

Book excerpt: The stage is set for the Beijing Olympiad to be the greatest mega-event, sporting or otherwise, in history. Still, the issues taxing many minds include whether the Beijing Games will be successful; whether they will be wrought with and wrecked by troubles; and who they will benefit. What value will the 2008 Games be to the people of China? Will they mainly serve the purposes of the dominant political, economic and cultural groups at and between the local, regional and global levels of modern social life? The Beijing Olympiad examines these among other questions, providing a range of original insights of interest to an array of scholars, researchers and students from Sports Studies to Sociology, Politics, Economics, International Relations and Legal Studies.

Book excerpt: Security Games: Surveillance and Control at Mega-Events addresses the impact of mega-events – such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup – on wider practices of security and surveillance. "Mega-Events" pose peculiar and extensive security challenges. The overwhelming imperative is that "nothing should go wrong." There are, however, an almost infinite number of things that can "go wrong"; producing the perceived need for pre-emptive risk assessments, and an expanding range of security measures, including extensive forms and levels of surveillance. These measures are delivered by a "security/industrial complex" consisting of powerful transnational corporate, governmental and military actors, eager to showcase the latest technologies and prove that they can deliver "spectacular levels of security". Mega-events have thus become occasions for experiments in monitoring people and places. And, as such, they have become important moments in the development and dispersal of surveillance, as the infrastructure established for mega-events are often marketed as security solutions for the more routine monitoring of people and place. Mega-events, then, now serve as focal points for the proliferation of security and surveillance. They are microcosms of larger trends and processes, through which – as the contributors to this volume demonstrate – we can observe the complex ways that security and surveillance are now implicated in unique confluences of technology, institutional motivations, and public-private security arrangements. As the exceptional conditions of the mega-event become the norm, Security Games: Surveillance and Control at Mega-Events therefore provides the glimpse of a possible future that is more intensively and extensively monitored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Governance and Policy in Sport Organizations introduces readers to the power and politics of sport organizations. It explores the managerial activities essential to governance and policy development, and it looks at the structure and function of organizations like those with which readers will interact in the workplace. It also demonstrates where the power lies in an organization or industry segment and how individual sport organizations fit in to the greater industry. Current policy issues and the ethical questions they raise are also addressed. Real-world case studies demonstrate the types of dilemmas that sport managers face every day. In addition, professional administrators from a wide variety of sport organizations contribute their perspectives, giving readers a glimpse into the real concerns of sport professionals and the impact of governance and policy on their jobs. The book's practical foundations, readability, and logical organization all help readers to understand the big picture of the sport industry and their place in it as future sport managers. New to the third edition is a chapter on individual professional sport, which explores how this industry segment differs from professional sport leagues. In addition, contributions from Thierry Zintz, from the Universite catholique de Louvain, offer insights into European sport organizations.
