Download or read book Intersection Theory written by W. Fulton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the ancient origins of algebraic geometry in the solution of polynomial equations, through the triumphs of algebraic geometry during the last two cen turies, intersection theory has played a central role. Since its role in founda tional crises has been no less prominent, the lack of a complete modern treatise on intersection theory has been something of an embarrassment. The aim of this book is to develop the foundations of intersection theory, and to indicate the range of classical and modern applications. Although a comprehensive his tory of this vast subject is not attempted, we have tried to point out some of the striking early appearances of the ideas of intersection theory. Recent improvements in our understanding not only yield a stronger and more useful theory than previously available, but also make it possible to devel op the subject from the beginning with fewer prerequisites from algebra and algebraic geometry. It is hoped that the basic text can be read by one equipped with a first course in algebraic geometry, with occasional use of the two appen dices. Some of the examples, and a few of the later sections, require more spe cialized knowledge. The text is designed so that one who understands the con structions and grants the main theorems of the first six chapters can read other chapters separately. Frequent parenthetical references to previous sections are included for such readers. The summaries which begin each chapter should fa cilitate use as a reference.
Book Synopsis Some Mathematical Questions in Biology by : Louis J. Gross
Download or read book Some Mathematical Questions in Biology written by Louis J. Gross and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986-12-31 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguishing itself among other books on mathematics in plant biology, this book is unique in that it presents a broad overview of how plant biologists are currently utilizing mathematics in their research, and the only one to particularly emphasize plant ecology. Each article is unified by an attempt to tie models at one level of organization to an understanding at other levels. This approach strengthens the connections between theoretical development and observable biology, facilitating the testing of new predictions. Intended for mathematicians, plant biologists and ecologists alike, this book requires only a basic knowledge of differential equations, linear algebra and mathematical modeling; a knowledge of plant biology is helpful. Readers will gain a perspective on what types of biological systems can benefit from mathematical treatment and an appreciation of the current important problems in plant biology.

Book Synopsis The Shameful State by : Sony Labou Tansi
Download or read book The Shameful State written by Sony Labou Tansi and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in a fictitious African nation, this novel by the distinguished writer Sony Labou Tansi takes aim at the corruption, degeneracy, violence, and repression of political life in Africa. At the heart of The Shameful State is the story of Colonel Martillimi Lopez, the nation's president, whose eccentricity and whims epitomize the "shameful situation in which humanity has elected to live." Lopez stages a series of grotesque and barbaric events while his nation falls apart. Unable to resist the dictator's will, his desperate citizens are left with nothing but humiliation. The evocation of this deranged world is a showcase for the linguistic and stylistic inventiveness that are the hallmark of Sony Labou Tansi's work. This first English translation by Dominic Thomas includes a foreword by Congolese writer Alain Mabanckou that contextualizes the novel's importance in literary history and the significance of Sony Labou Tansi for future generations of writers.

Book Synopsis The Oldest Orphan by : Tierno Monänembo
Download or read book The Oldest Orphan written by Tierno Monänembo and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tierno Monänembo was among the African authors invited to Rwanda after the 1994 Tutsi-Hutu massacre to ?write genocide into memory.? In his novel The Oldest Orphan, that is precisely what Monänembo does, to devastating effect. Powerful testimony to an unspeakable historical reality, this story is told by an adolescent on death row in a prison in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Dispassionately, almost cynically, the teenager Faustin tells his tale, alternating between his days in jail, his adventures wandering the countryside after his parents and most of the people of his village have been massacred, and his escapades as a cheerful hoodlum in the streets of Kigali. Only slowly does the full horror of his parents? death and his own experience return to Faustin. His realization strikes the reader with shattering force, for it carries in its wake the impossible but inescapable questions presented by such a murderous episode of history and such a crippling experience for a child, a people, and a nation.

Book Synopsis The Knight and His Shadow by : Boubacar Boris Diop
Download or read book The Knight and His Shadow written by Boubacar Boris Diop and published by Michigan State University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant tour de force, The Knight and His Shadow tells the tale of Lat-Sukabé’s quest to find his former lover, Khadidja, who writes him to “come before it’s too late.” As Lat-Sukabé recounts his past with Khadidja, reality shapeshifts and takes on a dreamlike quality. He describes how Khadidja is hired by a wealthy stranger to sit before an open door and tell stories into an uncertain darkness, unable to see the person to whom she speaks. Like Lat-Sukabé and Khadidja, the reader feels farther from home with every page, as the world turns and morphs. With those shifts, the symbolic order, the basis of meaning and sanity, begins to tremble. Postmodernist sensibilities meet postcolonial concerns in this lyrical novel from a master of Senegalese literature.
