Laser energy and emittance acceptance in the high gain regime for XUV light are examined using the FEL amplifier simulation code FRED. Assuming 50% mirror reflectivity, oscillation is shown to be feasible down to 220 A with a realizable wiggler magnet placed in the 27 meter straight section of the 1 GeV SXRC ring. Laser output power and time structure are determined for a 960 A oscillator operating in both 'cw' and slow pulsed modes.

Book excerpt: In an rf-linac-driven xuv free-electron laser oscillator, the gain depends on the details of the shape of the electron beam's phase-space distribution, particularly the distribution of electrons in the transverse (to the direction of propagation) position and velocity coordinates. This strong dependence occurs because the gain in this device is inhomogeneously broadened. Our previous theoretical studies have assumed that the transverse phase space distribution is a product of uncorrelated Gaussian functions. In the present work, we shall present the results of a theoretical study of the gain for non-Gaussian phase-space distributions. Such distributions arise either from a better representation of the electron beam from an rf-linac or from an emittance filter applied to the beam after the linac.

This can provide up to tens of milliwatts of power in the VUV. Operation of the FEL at the fundamental might enhance this power by up to a factor of 1000. With minor upgrades to the accelerator now underway and a new undulator proposed by Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. we show that we can lase in the fundamental at 124 nm. The predicted output is higher by four orders of magnitude on an average power basis and six orders of magnitude on a peak fluence basis than the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

As proposed, this facility would consist of a sequence of up to 15 FEL oscillators and amplifiers, driven by a single, rf-linear accelerator, that will generate broadly tunable, picosecond-pulse, coherent radiation over the range from 1 to 400 nm. Below 300 nm, the peak- and average-power output of these FEL devices should surpass the capabilities of any existing, continuously tunable photon sources by many orders-of-magnitude. We describe the design parameters and predicted output of these FELs and make comparison with synchrotron radiation sources. Book excerpt: Jefferson Lab operates a pair of oscillator-based continuous-wave Free Electron Lasers (FELs) as a linac-based next generation light source with pulse repetition rates up to 75 MHz. The facility uses an energy recovered linac design for efficiency of operation. Recent advances in superconducting technology have been implemented to produce higher acceleration gradients in the linac to produce higher electron beam energies that result in higher photon energies. Thus, while the system originally operated only in the IR, it now covers the photon energy range from the UV to THz, with harmonics upwards of 10 eV with an average spectral flux that is calculated to be 5x1017 photons/sec/0.1%BW. Pulse lengths are in the sub-picosecond regime, and the fully coherent nature of the source, both transversely and longitudinally, results in peak and average brightness values that are several orders of magnitude higher than storage rings. The system provides an R & D test-bed for studies of electron beam dynamics in a regime appropriate for next generation light sources operating at MHz repetition rates.
