Book Synopsis Ecological Dynamics by : W. S. C. Gurney
Download or read book Ecological Dynamics written by W. S. C. Gurney and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1998 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Dynamics is unique in that it can serve both as an introductory text in numerous ecology courses and as a resource for more advanced work. It provides a flexible introduction to ecological dynamics that is accessible to students with limited previous mathematical and computational experience, yet also offers glimpses into the state of the art in the field. The book is divided into three parts: Part I, Methodologies and Techniques, defines the authors' modeling philosophy, focusing on models rather than ecology, and introduces essential concepts for describing and analyzing dynamical systems. Part II, Individuals to Ecosystems, the core of the book, describes the formulation and analysis of models of individual organisms, populations, and ecosystems. Part III, Focus on Structure, introduces more advanced readers to models of 'structured' and spatially extended populations. Approximately 25% of the book is devoted to case studies drawn from the authors' research. Readers are guided through the many judgment calls involved in model formulation, shown the key steps in model analysis, and offered the authors' interpretation of the results. All chapters end with exercises and projects. While the book is designed to be independent of any particular computing environment, a well-tested software package (SOLVER), including programs for solution of differential and difference equations, is available via the World Wide Web at http: //www.stams.strath.ac.uk/external/solver. Ideal for courses in modeling ecological and environmental change, Ecological Dynamics can also be used in other courses such as theoretical ecology, population ecology, mathematical biology and ecology, and quantitative ecology.

Book Synopsis David & Winston by : Robert Lloyd George
Download or read book David & Winston written by Robert Lloyd George and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “splendid book” recounts the relationship between twentieth-century Britain’s two great wartime prime ministers (The Spectator). Both were outsiders. Neither attended university. Above all, both loved political sparring—often together, in the epic parliamentary battles of the start of the century. Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George shared a deeply personal friendship. For ten years between 1904 and 1914 they met every day for a private discussion. Lloyd George profoundly influenced Churchill’s political philosophy and played a formative role in his career. Drawing on unseen family archive material, Robert Lloyd George provides an intimate biography of the friendship between his great-grandfather and Churchill, from their public politics to their private passions. He throws fresh light on the two greatest statesmen of twentieth century Britain in peace and in war, and on one of the most enduring friendships in modern politics. “Lively and readable.” —Mail on Sunday
Download or read book Young Titan written by Michael Shelden and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern memory, Winston Churchill remains the man with the cigar and the equanimity among the ruins. Few can remember that at the age of 40, he was considered washed up, his best days behind him. In Young Titan, historian Michael Shelden has produced the first biography focused on Churchill’s early career, the years between 1901 and 1915 that both nearly undid him but also forged the character that would later triumph in the Second World War. Between his rise and his fall, Churchill built a modern navy, experimented with radical social reforms, survived various threats on his life, made powerful enemies and a few good friends, annoyed and delighted two British monarchs, became a husband and father, took the measure of the German military machine, authorized executions of notorious murderers, and faced deadly artillery barrages on the Western front. Along the way, he learned how to outwit more experienced rivals, how to overcome bureaucratic obstacles, how to question the assumptions of his upbringing, how to be patient and avoid overconfidence, and how to value loyalty. He also learned how to fall in love. Shelden gives us a portrait of Churchill as the dashing young suitor who pursued three great beauties of British society with his witty repartee, political f lair, and poetic letters. In one of many never-before-told episodes, Churchill is seen racing to a Scottish castle to prepare the heartbroken daughter of the prime minister for his impending marriage. This was a time of high drama, intrigue, personal courage, and grave miscalculations. But as Shelden shows in this fresh and revealing biography, Churchill’s later success was predicated on his struggles to redeem the promise of his youth.
Book Synopsis Understanding Williams Syndrome by : Eleanor Semel
Download or read book Understanding Williams Syndrome written by Eleanor Semel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-10-17 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and readable, Understanding Williams Syndrome: Behavioral Patterns and Interventions is an essential guide for all those professionally, scientifically, or personally involved with this so frequently misunderstood and underserved population--psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and other mental health professionals; special educators and vocational counselors; speech-language, physical, and occupational therapists; audiologists; physicians; and parents. In the last 20 years, Williams syndrome has captured the interest of large numbers of scientists and attracted considerable media attention in spite of its rarity (estimated at no more than one in 30,000 births). Those diagnosed display a unique pattern of behavioral, cognitive, and physical limitations and strengths with fascinating neurogenetic implications--a pattern that poses enormous challenges to their parents and caregivers. The authors, a specialist in learning disabilities and a developmental psychologist, review basic information about Williams syndrome, its medical conditions, paradoxical profile, and neurobiological mechanisms; and discuss distinctive features of the language and perceptual and motor performance of children and adults with the syndrome. Other features include: * Strategies for working with patients. * An examination of the difference between Williams syndrome and other developmental disorders. * Problem-specific alternatives for treatment. * Analysis of new directions in research, clinical intervention, education, and systems for care delivery. Throughout, they stress variations among individuals and subgroups in ability level, skills, talents, and problem severity; and emphasize the necessity of recognizing these components in planning treatment on an individual basis.
