Book excerpt: A lot is happening behind the scenes in the Rage Universe, and many stories are still left to be told. Most of these stories will be told in Worlds of Rage. • Serena: Who is Serena? The young and innocent priestess going to the Gonthor Mountains with her companions Mark and Orin? The giant blond mercenary-bashing warrior woman? The mysterious young woman on her way to Trall with Basilius’ party featured in Rage #6? Or maybe the one who got killed by mercenaries a while ago? And what is Serena’s mission anyway? All these questions are answered in this chapter! And hey, let’s take this opportunity to introduce a new Serena! • Arcana: What really happened in the fortress of Kahel? How did it end up a nest of demons, with an Hell’s Pit in the dungeons? How did Master Demon Torg become its new lord and master? Well, it’s Answers Time in Arcana too! In the last chapter, Torg, Sibelius and an army of mercenaries were on their way to the fortress of Kahel. With the fortress in sight, Brann saw his lover, Aelwen, daughter of the Lord of Kahel, entering the fortress with her party. Now, Sibelius and Torg are at the doors of Kahel, ready to fight its Lord and soldiers, and if Brann does nothing, Aelwen will be caught in the middle! • The Rage Universe isn’t limited to the European Kingdom of Arthkan. Events are beginning to unfold in Kusha, the African continent of the Rage Universe, which will ultimately have an impact on the Rage Series. The origin of these events will be told in the very first Rage Strip, Curse of the Panthermen, and it all begins in a tunnel, in the diamond mines of the Bathu City. M’jala, Bwerani and Hokwui are slaves working in the mines. Outside of the mines are a little group of mercenaries led by chief Gakere, and waiting for sorcerer Asukile’s green light to take the mine. After an accident which set them free, Hokwui, possessed by Asukile, becomes the leader of a group of rebel slaves, while M’jala and Bwerani flee in the tunnels. The rebels are losing, and Gakere is angry. He needs the guards to die, and the slaves to stay in the mines. So now, Asukile is speeding up the next part of his plan. For this part, he will need a spell. And for the spell, he will need sacrifices. But one of the sacrifices isn’t going to make this easy… • Discover more Black and White and Color pages of Rage Bane of Demons, the original Rage Graphic Novel, in the Bonus Pages section!

Book excerpt: 2022 Edition! A lot is happening behind the scenes in the Rage Universe, and many stories are still left to be told. Most of these stories will be told in Worlds of Rage. • Serena: While Serena is settling at Deer Antler Inn, three mercenaries are planning to ask her a few questions about one of her pouches with a strange sign on it, and from the look on their faces, she’d better have the right answers. Will all this sit well with Helena, Clara, Jen, and Enyd; waitresses (among other things) at Deer Antler Inn who seem to have taken a liking to Serena? You’ll have to read this chapter to find out! • Arcana: Ennis, Baron of Mendor; Arlin, Count of Dubrios; Lorne, Count of Orbis; and Aldaro, Duke of Calbriga are plotting to dethrone King Kothas. To this end, Brann of Dubrios, Arlin’s right hand man, has been sent to recruit other rich and powerful lords in the Arthkan Kingdom, but something has happened to Brann, and instead of a new ally, the cabal seems to have made a new enemy. In order to gather as much information as possible, Ennis called Khain Alhazred, a powerful seer who can show images of the past, present and future. So far, the four lords know that Brann has joined a team of mercenaries who were going to Castle Arvenskar. It seems that on their way to the castle, the mercenaries encountered a tribe of picts, and that Brann gained the trust of his fellow mercenaries after the battle that ensued. Once at castle Arvenskar, Brann managed to have a meeting with its master: Lord Sibelius. After an accident which has set them free, Hokwui is slowly becoming the leader of a group of rebel slaves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deflecting the attention from Hollywood, Stars in World Cinema fills an important gap in the study of film by bringing together Star Studies and World Cinema. A team of international scholars here bring their expertise and in-depth knowledge of world cultures and cinema to the study of stars and stardom from six continents, exploring their cultures, their local history and their global relevance. Chapters look at the role of acting, music, singing, painting and martial arts in the making of stars from Australia's indigenous population, Austria, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Japan, North and South Korea, Nigeria, the Philippines, the former Soviet Union, Spain, North and South America. Since the very beginnings of cinema, actors and stars have been central to its history and have been one of the medium's defining characteristics. They have also been fundamental to the marketing of cinema and have played a major part in the reception of films in many cultures. Stars in World Cinema examines stardom and the circulation of stars across borders, analysing how local star systems or non-systems construct stardom around the world. Contributors put into practice their local knowledge of history, language and cultural systems, to consider issues of hybridity, boundary crossing, the mobility of stardom, and embodied spectatorship, in order to further the understanding of stars in light the of recent interest in reception theory. Rooted in a multidisciplinary and polycentric approach, this book throws light on unexpected connections between stars and stardoms from different parts of the world, cutting across chronology, geographies and film history.

Book excerpt: “The many facets of Middle Eastern history and politics are admirably represented in this far-ranging anthology.” —Publishers Weekly In this insightful anthology, historians Marvin E. Gettleman and Stuart Schaar have assembled a broad selection of documents and contemporary scholarship to give a view of the history of the peoples from the core Islamic lands, from the Golden Age of Islam to today. With carefully framed essays beginning each chapter and brief introductory notes accompanying over seventy readings, the anthology reveals the multifaceted societies and political systems of the Islamic world. Selections range from theological texts illuminating the differences between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, to diplomatic exchanges and state papers, to memoirs and literary works, to manifestos of Islamic radicals. This newly revised and expanded edition covers the dramatic changes in the region since 2005, and the popular uprisings that swept from Tunisia in January 2011 through Egypt, Libya, and beyond. The Middle East and Islamic World Reader is a fascinating historical survey of complex societies that—now more than ever—are crucial for us to understand. “Ambitious . . . A timely work, it focuses mainly on sociopolitical texts dating from the rise of Islam to the debates concerning U.S. foreign policy in the post-9/11 world.” —Choice
