Although they have been living in Myanmar for centuries, the Myanmar government does not recognize the Rohingya as citizens of Myanmar. The Myanmar government believes the Rohingya are "illegal immigrants" or "Bengalis" who have recently entered the region. As a result, the Rohingya have not been recognized as an official ethnic minority in Myanmar since the 1982 Citizenship Amendment Act. Nowadays these people are stumbling around in different countries as stateless citizens. No country is ready to accept them as its citizens. The Rohingya have a long history of living in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Rakhine state, formerly known as Arakan state, was inhabited by members of the Rohingya Muslim and Buddhist communities. However, within the last two centuries, Arakan Kingdom was conquered by the Burmese in 1784 and then Myanmar, like India, was ruled by the Britishers for a long time. From 1824 to 1948, Myanmar was a slave of the British. The British made Myanmar a colonial state and to work there, the Britishers brought laborers from Bangladesh and different regions of India which had a large number of poor Muslims. Book excerpt: In December 2019, Myanmar defended itself before the International Court of Justice against genocide charges for the atrocities committed in 2016–2017 against the Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya crisis has driven several hundreds of thousands of the Rohingya as refugees into neighbouring Bangladesh with an unsettled future. In addition, questions of perpetrator accountability remain open. The UN Human Rights Council created a fact-finding mission and an international investigative mechanism for the purpose of bringing the individuals responsible to justice. With Western states generally condemning Myanmar’s actions, China’s influence in and over Myanmar has intensified, as the country has blocked robust action before the UN Security Council, leading to charges of political inaction. There is growing legal pressure against Myanmar at the national and international level, forcing it to respond. While accountability proceedings are important, problems may emerge when several courts deal with the same situation. Their capacity to provide immediate relief in relation to the crisis is also small.

Book excerpt: The Rohingya are a Muslim group who live in Rakhine state (formerly Arakan state) in western Myanmar (Burma), a majority Buddhist country. According to the United Nations, they are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They suffer routine discrimination at the hands of neighboring Buddhist Rakhine groups, but international human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) have also accused Myanmar's authorities of being complicit in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya face regular violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, extortion, and other abuses, a situation that has been particularly acute since 2012 in the wake of a serious wave of sectarian violence. Islam is practiced by around 4% of the population of Myanmar, and most Muslims also identify as Rohingya. Yet the authorities refuse to recognize this group as one of the 135 ethnic groups or 'national races' making up Myanmar's population. On this basis, Rohingya individuals are denied citizenship rights in the country of their birth, and face severe limitations on many aspects of an ordinary life, such as marriage or movement around the country. This expose of the attempt to erase the Rohingyas from the face of Myanmar is sure to gain widespread attention.
