Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microorganisms have simultaneously served and assaulted man throughout history. Man is totally dependent on some microbes for life processes, while remaining subject to the destructive capacities of others in diseases not yet conquered.Microbes can be marshaled to aid in solving many important global problems including food shortages, resource recovery and reuse, energy shortages, and pollution. Microbiology is particularly suited to make important contributions to human needs in developing countries, yet it has received comparatively little attention. The range of possible applications covers uses by individuals and industries in rural settings, villages, and cities. This book covers examples of microbial processes that may be useful in developing countries. Although many of these processes may not have a direct and immediate use, their scope and diversity should serve to indicate the strong potential for microbial applications.

This book discusses the mutation, selection, and optimization of mutagenesis; fermentation substrates; and published accounts of computer-coupled fermentation systems. The waste materials as SCP substrates, immobilized cell processes, and microbial transformations of organic compounds are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the microbiological and enzymatic conversion of ß-lactam antibiotics, microbiological production of chemical feedstocks, and aeration systems and their performance. Other topics include the toxicology and regulation of enzyme use, general considerations of immobilized enzyme systems, mutational biosynthesis, and biotransformations and the role of precursors. This volume is a good reference for students and researchers interested in fermentation research and developments.

This cooperation has been fostered by the setting up of Biotechnology Centres to promote the exchange of ideas and enterprise. This volume consists of major articles from Industrial Biotechnology which reflect both the educational nature of much of the journal's output and the very wide range of its subject matter. The articles cover some of the basic biological processes that are the resources of biotechnology and consider major applications in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, biosensors and other areas. The future of biotechnology and its progress in other countries is also considered. This will be of vital interest for all workers in the field of biotechnology and those who have an interest in the development of this exciting and diverse field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Bacillw; has a long history of importance, both from an economic point of view and as a source of experimental microorganisms. This volume critically reviews aspects of identification, molecular biology, and growth that are of impor tance for the current and anticipated future exploitation of members of this group. In addition, the volume includes a chapter on taxonomy, as the importance of good taxonomy is often not fully appreciated; on sporulation, since so many important products are produced concomitantly with this process and we are beginning to understand the mechanisms by which the process is controlled; and, finally, on the cell envelope, as we are only just beginning to appreciate the significance of dif ferences between the cell walls of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for productivity and processing. The commercial importance of Bacillus lies mainly in the area of enzyme pro duction for the food, drink, and detergent markets. Increasingly, however, the ability of Bacillus to secrete proteins, coupled with its regulatory acceptability, has resulted in strenuous efforts to develop species of Bacillus as hosts for the produc tion of value-added heterologous proteins. Difficulties have often been encoun tered, indicating a need to divert more resources to improving our understanding of the molecular biology of members of this grou p. Experience with Escherichia coli, a far from ideal organism from a commercial point of view, suggests that an in creased investment in Bacillus is likely ultimately to be productive.
