The pathways to the formation of each soil type are discussed against the background of such soil-forming factors as climate, lithology and physiography. The distribution of the different soil types is explained, based on the relationships between soils and soil-forming factors. This the first reference on the topic since 1948.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological capabilities of the ancient world have long fascinated scholars and the general public alike, though scholarly debate has often seen material culture not as the development of technology, but as a tool for defining chronology and delineating the level of interactions of neighboring societies. These fourteen papers, arising from a conference held in Oxford in September 2000, take the approach that technology plays a vital role in past socioeconomic systems. They cover the Near East and associated areas, including Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Anatolia, the Levant, Mesopotamia and Egypt from the end of the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Bronze Age (1650-1150 BC), a period when many technological innovations appear for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground stone artefacts were widely used in food production in prehistory. However, the archaeological community has widely neglected the dataset of ground stone artefacts until now. 'New Approaches to Old Stones' offers a theoretical and methodological analysis of the archaeological data pertaining to ground stone tools. The essays draw on a range of case studies - from the Levant, Egypt, Crete, Anatolia, Mexico and North America - to examine ground stone technologies. From medieval Islamic stone cooking vessels and late Minoan stone vases, to the use of stone in ritual and as a symbol of luxury, 'New Approaches to Old Stones' offers a radical reassessment of the impact of ground-stone artefacts on technological change, production and exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the climates, landscapes, ecosystems and hazards that comprise the Mediterranean world. It traces the development of the Mediterranean landscape over very long timescales and examines modern processes and key environmental issues in a wide range of settings. The Mediterranean is the only region on Earth where three continents meet and this interaction has produced a very distinctive Physical Geography. This book examines the landscapes and processes at the margins of these continents and the distinctive marine environment between them. Catastrophic earthquakes, explosive volcanic eruptions and devastating storms and floods are intimately bound up within the history and mythology of the Mediterranean world. This is a key region for the study of natural hazards because it offers unrivalled access to long records of hazard occurrence and impact through documentary, archaeological and geological archives. The Mediterranean is also a biodiversity hotspot; it has been a meeting place for plants, animals and humans from three continents throughout much of its history. The Quaternary records of these interactions are more varied and better preserved than in any other part of the world. These records have provided important new insights into the tempo of climate, landscape and ecosystem change in the Mediterranean region and beyond. The region is unique because of the very early and widespread impact of humans in landscape and ecosystem change - and the richness of the archaeological and geological archives that chronicle this impact. This book examines this history and these interactions and places current environmental issues in long term context. This study will be of interest to students of environmental studies.

Not only has he participated in and directed excavations at many sites, his professional standards are of the first order, and what's more, his publication record is enviable: he has never begun a new major project before the final publication of the previous excavation was well underway. Here, more than 55 colleagues gather to honor him with a wide range of essays, organized in 7 sections: I. Early Bronze Age Studies II. Middle and Late Bronze Age Studies III. Philistine/Sea Peoples Studies IV. Iron Age Studies V. Historical, Biblical, and Epigraphic Studies VI. Jerusalem Studies VII. Post-Iron Age Studies An international group of contributors includes: E. Braun, I. Finkelstein, D. Ussishkin, P. M. Fischer, R. Gophna, D. Gazit, R. Greenberg, P. de Miroschedji, B. Sass, M. Nieuwenhuis** *Laboratory of Geophysics, Aarhus University Finlandsgade 6, DK-8200 Aarhus N, Denmark **Ministry of Transport and Public Works Rijkswaterstaat, Deltadienst Van Alkemadelaan 400, 2597 AT the Hague The Netherlands The NATO Science Committee Special Programme Panel on Marine Sciences decided in September 1979 that a work ing group should prepare a document dealing with the prob lems of marine slides. The working group submitted to the Panel a proposal for the arrangement of an interdisciplinary workshop on Marine Slides and other Mass Movements, and the Panel decided to fund such a workshop. Mass movement of soils and rocks on subaerial slopes is a subject which has been intensely studied over the past fifty years, and its literature is becoming extens ive. The submarine phenomenon, although similar in its pbysical basis, is much less studied, but has become an important subject (particularly during the past decade) because of the increase of man's use of the coastal en vironment and the intensified exploration for oil and minerals on the continental margins and ocean basins.
