Book excerpt: The 1987 Fontevraud Conference gathered more than 100 physicists for the purpose of discussing the latest developments of research on few-body problems. In addition to participants from most European countries representatives from Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, South Africa, and the USA took part in the meeting. In the conference program special emphasis was laid on bringing together the various fields, where few-body problems play an important role. Beyond the traditional areas of nuclear and particle physics, in recent years interest has been focussed especially on atomic and molecular physics. This developent is due to the design of new techniques for solving few-body problems under rather general premises. The proceedings contain all plenary talks and the contributions presented orally at the conference. They cover such topics as: few-quark systems and short-range phenomena, two- and three-body forces in quark as well as nucleonic systems, few-hadron bound states, response of few-body systems to electromagnetic and hadronic probes, form factors, hypernuclei, atomic and molecular few-body systems, hyperspherical method, separable expansions, numerical techniques, etc. It appears that recently, even in one year after the Tokyo-Sendai Conference, much progress has been achieved in research on various few-body systems. The present volume gives a comprehensive summary of the modern state of the art and at the same time a proper account of the most recent results obtained in the different institutions and laboratories.

Book excerpt: This volume gives a detailed account of the current trends in the interface areas of medium and high energy nuclear physics. Special stress is given to topics like chiral models, relativistic models, hot nuclei, quark-gluon plasma and other reactions with non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. The articles present the state-of-the-art research in these areas and also suggest unsolved problems which will form the main thrust of future research work in nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume brings together the contributions of experts from different fields within the nuclear physics community. Topics such as rare kaon decays, astrophysics, relativistic heavy ion collisions, and few-GeV electromagnetic probes are covered. The strange quark plays a vital role in understanding such diverse phenomena as CP violation (article by Lincoln Wolfenstein), the ?spin crisis? (article by Brad Filipone), and supernova explosions (article by Chris Fryer). Additional topics of interest are parity violation experiments, strangeness content of the proton, and enhanced strangeness production at CERN and RHIC. This unique blend of recent results, with a focus on the role of the strange quark, shows the prominence of strangeness in nuclear physics over the past 50 years.

Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Contents: Introduction and Review: Experimental and Theoretical Status: Duality in the Polarized Structure Functions (H Blok); Spin Structure of the Nucleon and Aspects of Duality (Z E Meziani); Duality and Confinement: Quark Models of Duality in Electron and Neutrino Scattering (W Melnitchouk); Hadron Structure on the Back of an Envelope (A Thomas); Spin-Flavor Decomposition and Duality in Polarized SIDIS (X Jiang); Hadron Structure on the Back of an Envelope (A Thomas); Duality in Photoproduction: Duality in Vector Meson Production (A Donnachie); Onsef of Scaling in Exclusive Processes (M Mirazita); Duality in Nuclei: A Partonic Picture of Jet Fragmentation in Nuclei (X-N Wang); Quark Gluon Plasma and Hadronic Gas on the Lattice (M P Lombardo); Duality in Neutrino Experiments: Neutrinos: Local Duality and Charge Symmetry Violation (F Steffens); Duality and QCD: Higher Twist Effects in Polarized DIS (D Stamenov); Quark-Hadron Duality and High Excitations (M Shifman); Highly Excited Hadrons in QCD and Beyond (M Shifman); Future Perspectives: Transverse Polarization and Quark-Hadron Duality (O Teryaev); Research Perspectives with the Jefferson Lab (K de Jager); Perspectives with PANDA (P Gianotti); Summary Talk (P Hoyer); Transverse Polarization and Quark Gluon Duality (O Teryaev); and other papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.
