Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New EU Physical Agents Directives on Noise and Vibration will be incorporated into UK law by February 2006. Explicit action levels for vibration will be introduced, while the action levels for noise will be drastically cut. In order to comply with these Directives, companies need to assess noise and vibration levels and provide necessary protection for their employees. They are also required to monitor and if necessary reduce noise and vibration risks. Managing Noise and Vibration at Work introduces noise and both hand-arm and whole-body vibration by explaining what they are and how they can affect the body, drawing out the similarities and differences between the hazards. It provides clear explanations of the requirements of the EU Directives and explains how to fulfill them. Practical information on measurement, making noise and vibration assessments, and approaches to controlling risk help the reader to understand the issues of noise and vibration exposure in the workplace. The text is supported by information and diagrams of measuring equipment, advice on how to plan a survey, worked examples of necessary calculations, and charts and diagrams that can be used in place of the calculations. Suitable hearing and vibration protection is detailed. Case studies help to set the subject in context and highlight common errors and pitfalls. The book fully covers the syllabuses of the Institute of Acoustics’ certificate courses in Workplace Noise Assessment and Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand-arm Vibration. It will also be of use to those studying for the Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. For those studying for the NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety, this book satisfies modules 1E and 2E. As the Institute of Acoustics syllabuses are based on the Health and Safety Executive's guidelines, the book will also be a useful up-to-date reference for: risk managers; Health and Safety advisors and managers; occupational hygienists; environmental health officers; and HSE inspectors, especially in the Construction, Manufacturing, Agriculture and Forestry sectors. Tim South is a Senior Lecturer in Acoustics at the School of Health and Human Sciences at Leeds Metropolitan University, and a member of the Institute of Acoustics’ Education Committee. He teaches the Institute of Acoustics courses for the Certificate of Competence in Workplace Noise Assessment, the Certificate in the Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand-arm Vibration, and also the Institute’s Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control. He has extensive consultancy experience in workplace noise assessments, hand-arm vibration and whole-body vibration exposure assessments.

Book excerpt: Through continued collaboration and the sharing of ideas, data, and results, the international community of researchers and practitioners has developed an understanding of many facets of the human response to vibration. At a time when the EU is preparing to adopt a directive on health risks arising from occupational exposure to vibration, Human Response to Vibration offers authoritative guidance on this complex subject. Individual chapters in the book examine issues relating to whole-body vibration, hand-arm vibration, and motion sickness. Vibration measurements and standards are also addressed. This book meets the needs of those requiring knowledge of human response to vibration in order to make practical improvements to the physical working environment. Written with the consultant, practitioner, researcher, and student in mind, the text is designed to be an educational tool, a reference, and a stimulus for new ideas for the next generation of specialists.

Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2010 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: N/A, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: This research project is about the Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) which construction workers suffer from. Are the daily exposure levels of vibration to which construction workers are exposed within acceptable limits? HAVS is a group of symptoms related to the use of equipment and tools that vibrate. Symptoms range from vascular and neurological to musculoskeletal, and affect different parts of the hand-arm system. Vibration is the oscillatory motion of bodies. It is divided into hand transmitted vibration, which is vibration entering the body through hands, and whole-body vibration, which enters the body when it is supported by some vibrating surface. There are over 8 million workers that are exposed to vibration, and as an occupational hazard, it is not given much attention in Botswana and in most parts of the developing world. A quantitative cross-sectional study design was used since there were different groups whose results were compared. The vibrometer was be used to quantify the daily vibration levels in each sample population, and the questionnaire distributed provided additional information as to the presence of symptoms or history of any discomfort resulting from the type of work. The population of interest includes the workers at a construction site within the University of Botswana, and these were divided into 5 groups, each group comprised 2 to 3 workers selected systematically, from whom data was collected depending on the tools available on the construction site. This means that the study population was 15. When one looks at its negative effects on the human body, which range from simple nausea to HAVS, it is safe to say that vibration is not getting the attention it needs. Various technical developments in society have led to an increase in the number and types of sources of vibration to which people are exposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational and environmental health is the public health and multidisciplinary approach to the recognition, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control of disease, injuries, and other adverse health conditions resulting from hazardous environmental exposures in the workplace, the home, or the community. These are essential elements of public health practice and the core course in Environmental Health in Masters of Public Health programs. Thoroughly updated and expanded upon, the sixth edition of Occupational and Environmental Health provides comprehensive coverage and a clear understanding of occupational and environmental health and its relationships to public health, environmental science, and governmental policy. New chapters include Toxicology, Risk Communication, Health Equity and Social Justice, Occupational and Environmental Health Surveillance, Food Safety, Protecting Disaster Rescue and Recovery Workers, Implementing Programs and Policies for a Healthy Workforce, and Addressing the Built Environment and Health. The authors also expand on chapters included in previous chapters, and the book features practical case studies, numerous tables, graphs, and photos, and annotated bibliographies. Reviews for previous editions: "This text goes a long way in meeting the need for a brief overview of the entire field. The quality of writing is in general excellent, and this is a physically attractive book. Chapters are concise and to the point. The use of illustrative cases in many of the chapters is a definite plus. This an excellent book and a mainstay for introductory courses in the field."--The American Journal of Industrial Medicine "It achieves a good blend of practical application, together with the elements of the supporting sciences, such as toxicology and epidemiology, as well the social context. It is a useful text to inform and support day-to-day practice, to educate students, and to help with examinations. If I had not received a reviewer's copy, i would have bought the book out of my own pocket."--Occupational and Environmental Medicine "The book is geared primarily to medical personnel and professionals, but it contains many chapters that would be of use to nearly everyone. It is a delight to read."--Journal of Community Health
