Book Synopsis Regionalism, Trade and Economic Development in the Asia-Pacific Region by : Muhammed Abu B. Siddique
Download or read book Regionalism, Trade and Economic Development in the Asia-Pacific Region written by Muhammed Abu B. Siddique and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editor of this book is to be congratulated for providing us with the works of a group of authors who combine proficient technical skills with elegant and lucid writing capabilities. . . This book would make excellent recommended reading for both undergraduate and graduate classes in international trade and finance. Herb Thompson, Journal of Contemporary Asia This book is based on the premise that Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) in the Asia-Pacific significantly impact on the material progress of the peoples of this region. These impacts in terms of the benefits and costs associated with RTAs will vary greatly from country to country. The internationally acclaimed contributors examine the theoretical perspective of RTAs in relation to exchange rates, the role and goals of the WTO and agriculture. The tensions and trade frictions resulting from the formation of trade blocs and their conflicts with the roles and goals of the WTO are also examined in the book. Those economies that are considered the economic powerhouses of the region including China, Japan, South Korea, major ASEAN countries and Australia are discussed in depth. The findings of the book suggest that RTAs are becoming increasingly popular in the Asia-Pacific region. However the associated costs and benefits depend on a number of complex factors including exchange rates, negotiation skills, the sectors included or excluded from the RTA, and the level of economic development of the nations signing the RTAs. The book will be particularly useful to academics, researchers, consultants, students, policy makers (including trade negotiators), and practitioners involved in trade and development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Book Synopsis Kyrgyz Republic by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Kyrgyz Republic written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-05-05 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews economic developments in the Kyrgyz Republic during 1995–99. After having contracted by about 50 percent between 1992 and 1995, real GDP recovered strongly in 1996, with a growth rate of more than 7 percent. The main source behind this increase was a strong growth of the agricultural sector, which continued the following year, and, combined with the startup of the Kumtor gold mine, led to a real GDP growth rate of almost 10 percent in 1997. During 1998, growth slowed down to about 2 percent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previous observations, there is no doubt that trade enhanced economic growth. This is especially valid in regard to international trade as it can help or hinder entire regions, thus adding to the issue of international security. In this book, we tried to collect texts that would not repeat known facts on international trade but would rather discuss special issues. Furthermore, we also wanted to bring regional perspectives. Therefore, this book is organized into two sections: "Selected Perspectives on International Trade" and "Regional Specific Issues of International Trade".
Book Synopsis Work in a Warming World by : Carla Lipsig-Mummé
Download or read book Work in a Warming World written by Carla Lipsig-Mummé and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming is perhaps the greatest challenge facing the twenty-first century. Environmental polices on the one hand, and economic and labour market polices on the other, often exist in separate silos creating a dilemma that Work in a Warming World confronts. The world of work - goods, services, and resources - produces most of the greenhouse gases created by human activity. In engaging essays, contributors demonstrate how the world of work and the labour movement need to become involved in the struggle to slow global warming, and the ways in which environmental and economic policies need to be linked dynamically in order to effect positive change. Addressing the dichotomy of competing public policies in a Canadian context, Work in a Warming World presents ways of creating an effective response to global warming and key building blocks toward a national climate strategy.
Book Synopsis Rachet Effects in Currency Substitution by : Mr.Joannes Mongardini
Download or read book Rachet Effects in Currency Substitution written by Mr.Joannes Mongardini and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currency substitution is now a common issue in the design of monetary policy in most transition economies. This paper analyzes the persistence of this phenomenon in the Kyrgyz Republic by including a ratchet variable in the model specification. The main conclusion of the paper is that, while some degree of persistence is present in the allocation of bank deposit, currency substitution in the economy at large has not yet reached a point where reversing it would be difficult. In this regard, there is still room for monetary policy to influence currency allocation in the private sector.
