Book Synopsis Teaching Social Work Practice by : Mark Doel
Download or read book Teaching Social Work Practice written by Mark Doel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Social Work Practice is a lively, practical guide to developing your knowledge and skills as a teacher of social work practice in an agency setting. Social work students learn to practise in college and agency settings, and this book will help to integrate the student’s experience of learning. Teaching social work is different from practising social work, and this book is designed to help practitioners to develop their teaching abilities with students. The author uses a combination of exercises, activities, notes and further reading to guide and encourage the reader through seven ’modules’, which include Anti-oppressive practice teaching, Models of adult learning, and Methods of practice teaching. Each module is designed to help you learn how to teach social work practice. There is an emphasis on self-directed learning and active teaching. The book also gives advice on collecting evidence of your developing abilities, and examples of how to demonstrate this in a portfolio. This is especially useful to people who are studying for the Practice Teaching Award. Finally, Teaching Social Work Practice provides useful digests of the relevant literature in the area of practice teaching and learning - helpful pointers for busy practitioners. Teaching Social Work Practice will be of interest to social workers who are considering practice teaching as well as those existing practice teachers who want to continue to develop their skills. College-based teachers and trainers will also find useful material. In addition, the book has much to offer social work managers who wish to develop their skills in staff and supervision and staff-development.

Download or read book Rescuing Reason written by R. Nola and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do knowledge and science arise from the application of canons of rationality and scientific method? Or is all our scientific knowledge caused by socio-political factors, or by our interests in the socio-political - the view of sociologists of "knowledge"? Or does it result from interplay of relations of power - the view of Michel Foucault? Or does our knowledge arise from "the will to power" - the view of Nietzsche? This volume sets out to critically examine the theses of those who would debunk the idea of rational explanation. The book is wide-ranging. The theories of method of Quine, Kuhn, Feyerabend (amongst others) are discussed and related to the views of Marx, Foucault, Wittgenstein and Nietzsche as well as sociologists of science such as Mannheim and Bloor. The author provides a wide interpretative framework which links the doctrines espoused by many of these authors; it is argued that they inherit many of the difficulties in the Strong Programme in the sociology of "knowledge", and that they fail to reconcile the normativity of knowledge with their naturalism. It is argued that neither relativists, sceptics, nihilists, sociologists of "knowledge" nor the postmodernists successfully debunk the claims of rational explanation, far from it: these theorists presuppose much of the theory of methodology they deny.
