Book Synopsis Values and Development in Southern Africa by : Hans-Peter Müller
Download or read book Values and Development in Southern Africa written by Hans-Peter Müller and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development has been on Africa's agenda for a long time but progress has been both varied and limited, partly due to the diverse levels of the discussions on the challenges and the interventions for tackling them. Africa's greatest challenge is the uneven development within and between its countries, and the pressing issues of extreme poverty in southern Africa, and the continent as a whole. Poverty causes its victims to suffer social exclusion and political repression. In addition, societies that experience poverty are also mostly under continuous threat of ecological disasters and diseases. This book focuses on the social and cultural dimensions of development dynamics and, in particular, the role of values in shaping development. Values are at the core of the hopes and aspirations of individuals, communities, and societies. The book therefore explains the values that motivate and inform African communities and societies, with a view to facilitating a dialogue about sustainable development in Africa among academics, intellectuals, policy and decisionmakers, and the communities themselves.

Book Synopsis Facing Trajectories from School to Work by : Hans-Uwe Otto
Download or read book Facing Trajectories from School to Work written by Hans-Uwe Otto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book promotes a radical alternative impact on youth policy in Europe to overcome the situation of vulnerability and discrimination of a growing number of youngsters in their transition from school to work. It follows a Human Development perspective in using the Capability Approach (CA) as analytical and methodological guiding tool to improve the social conditions of the most socially vulnerable young people in European societies. The mission of the interdisciplinary authors is to expand the actual chances of the young to actively shape their lives in a way they have reason to choose and value. This book is based on the research of the EU Collaborative Project “Making Capabilities Work” (WorkAble), funded by the EU within the Seventh Framework Programme. It is the first empirical project to pursue a justice theory perspective on a European level. It also contributes to a fundamental change in the currently mostly insufficient attempts within the human capital approach to use the labour market to ensure desired lifestyle forms and a secure income for vulnerable youth.

Book Synopsis Decentering Comparative Analysis in a Globalizing World by :
Download or read book Decentering Comparative Analysis in a Globalizing World written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decentering Comparative Analysis in a Globalizing World aims to go beyond the traditional criticism in comparative analysis. It wants to shed new light on the question of comparing as a form of categorizing. In this perspective, three relevant dimensions to question the naturalized categories of comparison are mobilized: ethnocentrism, the nation, and academic disciplines. Based on original empirical work, the volume proposes to use comparative categories by mixing and shifting the analytical perspectives. It brings together contributions that come to terms with the historicity of the comparative method in the social sciences. It eventually deals with the key issue of comparability of various cases, in the enlarged context of a globalizing world. Contributors are: Anna Amelina, Camille Boullier, Catherine Cavalin, Serge Ebersold, Andreas Eckert, Mouhamedoune Abdoulaye Fall, Isabel Georges, Olivier Giraud, Aïssa Kadri, Wiebke Keim, Michel Lallement, Marie Mercat-Bruns, Luis Felipe Murillo, Kiran Klaus Patel, Léa Renard, Ferruccio Ricciardi, Paul-André Rosental, Pablo Salazar-Jaramillo, Stéphanie Tawa-Lama, Nikola Tietze, Tania Toffanin, Michel Vincent and Bénédicte Zimmermann.

Book Synopsis Education for Sustainable Development in Primary and Secondary Schools by : Güliz Karaarslan-Semiz
Download or read book Education for Sustainable Development in Primary and Secondary Schools written by Güliz Karaarslan-Semiz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides teachers with pedagogical approaches and practical applications to implement Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and with assessment strategies to evaluate the learning outcomes of ESD in primary and secondary education. In addition to appropriate pedagogical approaches for ESD, the book also presents practical examples that teachers can use as a guide in their classes. The pedagogical approaches related to ESD not only aim to facilitate sustainability knowledge, but also promote attitudes, new perspectives, values, skills and competencies related to sustainability. Thus, holistic and transformative approaches are embraced to develop a deeper understanding of sustainability, values, respect towards the environment, connection to nature, systems thinking to understand complex problems, exhibiting responsible behaviours for sustainability and promoting action competence for sustainable development. This book also provides examples of assessment strategies for ESD. The assessment of ESD learning outcomes and learning processes is usually challenging, but it is important to determine how to evaluate ESD learning outcomes to reveal whether we achieve our ESD goals or not. For this reason, the assessment section of the book includes theoretical concepts and measurement tools for evaluating sustainability competencies and learning outcomes. Through the close and active collaboration of 22 authors from Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, and the UK, good models for ESD implementation in primary and secondary education are presented.
