The first modern crossword puzzle is widely attributed to a journalist named Arthur Wynne, who created the first puzzle for the New York World newspaper in 1913. The puzzle, which was a diamond-shaped grid with clues, was an instant hit and soon became a regular feature of the newspaper. The popularity of crossword puzzles continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s, with many newspapers and magazines adding them to their publications. During this time, the puzzles also began to evolve, with new types of grids and clue structures being developed. One of the most famous early crossword puzzle constructors was Margaret Farrar, who worked for the New York Times and was responsible for creating many of the paper's early crossword puzzles. Her puzzles were known for their clever clues and creative grid designs, and helped to cement the popularity of crosswords as a popular form of entertainment. Today, crossword puzzles can be found in newspapers, magazines, and online, and remain a popular pastime for millions of people around the world. They continue to evolve, with new types of puzzles and clue structures being developed, but the basic concept of a grid of words with clues remains the same.
