Download or read book Robert A. Dahl written by David Baldwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the work of Robert A. Dahl, who passed away in 2014. Dahl was one of the most important American political scientists and normative democratic theorists of the post-war era, and he was also an influential teacher who mentored some of the most significant academics of the next two generations of American political science. As an incredibly productive scholar he had a career that spanned more than half a century, his first book was published in 1950 his last was in 2007 at the age of 92. As a political scientist, he was respected even by those who were critical of his works. This theoretical significance and profound influence is reflected in the collection of chapters in this volume, which reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the contemporary US political science scene. His co-author Bruce Stinebrickner documents the evolution of his and Dahl’s seminal text, Modern Political Analysis and how it became the standard introduction to American political science for nearly fifty years. Katharine MacKinnon’s chapter is of significance for its insights upon Dahl and also represents a succinct statement of a feminist reading and critique of contemporary political science. Steven Lukes contributes a highly concise statement of the difference between one-dimensional and three-dimensional power. This work will be a standard reference work for any researchers or those interested in the work of Robert Dahl, among both established academics and students. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Political Power.

Book Synopsis The Word Before the Powers by : Charles L. Campbell
Download or read book The Word Before the Powers written by Charles L. Campbell and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this examination of the ethical significance of preaching, Charles Campbell provides both fresh insights into the relationship between preaching and ethics and a challenging moral vision for the contemporary church. Moving beyond a narrow focus on moral decision-making or social-issues sermons, Campbell argues that a particular ethic--nonviolent resistance--is inherent in the practice of preaching and shapes the moral life of the church. In the face of the powers, the fundamental ethical task of preaching involves building up the church as a community of resistance. Employing three dimensions of character ethics--vision, practices, and virtues--Campbell demonstrates the concrete ways in which preachers may undertake this task.
Book Synopsis The Four Vision Quests of Jesus by : Steven Charleston
Download or read book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus written by Steven Charleston and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique look at Christian biblical interpretation and theology from the perspective of Native American tradition. This book focuses on four specific experiences of Jesus as portrayed in the synoptic gospels. It examines each story as a “vision quest,” a universal spiritual phenomenon, but one of particular importance within North American indigenous communities. Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is the first quest. It speaks to a foundational Native American value: the need to enter into the “we” rather than the “I.” The Transfiguration is the second quest, describing the Native theology of transcendent spirituality that impacts reality and shapes mission. Gethsemane is the third quest. It embodies the Native tradition of the holy men or women, who find their freedom through discipline and concerns for justice, compassion, and human dignity. Golgotha is the final quest. It represents the Native sacrament of sacrifice (e.g., the Sun Dance). The chapter on Golgotha is a discussion of kinship, balance, and harmony: all primary to Native tradition and integral to Christian thought.

Download or read book Vision Quest written by Peter James Ford and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “VISION QUEST” is a book recording the continual soul expansion of the seeker, Peter James Ford. Peter’s journey began after a powerful spiritual experience in the little historic seaport in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In Peter’s late night meditations which were along the Merrimac River, the boardwalk, the Salisbury Reservation on the Atlantic Ocean, Plum Island, Maudsley Estate State Park, Pow Wow Hill (Native American Burial Grounds) and Old Hill Burial Grounds he was having vivid explosions in his mind of ‘seemingly’ past life experiences and powerful insights. Peter began seeing the hidden secrets of this quaint little seaport that people never take the time to see. Peter’s intuition and senses increased in an almost scary powerful way giving Peter wisdom from unseen sources. The source may be the Akashic Records/Library that is not a physical library but a place in the ethers that contains all the wisdom and knowledge ever known to anyone over the eons. We can access this power through ancient spiritual practices and apparently Peter has done just that. Stories and Tales began flowing from Peter and he wrote his first book. In the last three years Peter has written eight more books and shares everything he has found from his journeys to the inner worlds. Peter wrote a seven-book series under the title “MYSTICISM IN NEWBURYPORT” with an eighth bonus/companion book called “MYSTIC”. Now you are holding his new writings in your hands. Peter laughingly calls himself “An Unlikely Messenger” as his younger years were nothing resembling anything spiritual. So, here is the story of just another seeker realizing his divinity and returning to his own heart...
Download or read book The Quest written by Jay J. Drummond and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So here we are, soaring through the depths of space as if we belong here. Twelve years ago, we had no deep space program and we'd never ventured past the moons of Jupiter. We were forced into this sci-fi existence. Scientists from all around the world had warned us to take care of our fragile environment, which had already been suffering from rising sea levels and global extremes. They tried to prepare us for the consequences of neglect and the cost of our ruthless consumption of the planet's natural resources, but greed is a powerful thing, as is lack of foresight. Our planet went into a global whiteout that began during the 21st century. It was expected to cause the annihilation of all advanced life on planet earth. In an attempt to save humanity, an enormous self-contained spaceship, lovingly christened The Enterprise, set off for the Orion nebula in January of the year 2120 in the hopes of finding an inhabitable planet to claim as our own. Able to make great leaps into the galaxy, through an induced wormhole, this vessel enabled us to be found by a Federation of different species of advanced humanoids inhabiting planets in over one hundred solar systems. We now know for sure that we are not alone in this universe. We were invited to join this federation. We also found a planet we could inhabit. There are also two dangerous and surprisingly advanced reptilian adversaries, the Palchek and the Crau, who have terrorized the Federation for several millenia. After thousands of years of this aggression, Kotar, the leader of the Federation, declares an all out war.... --Commander Robert Manning, First Mate of New Earth's Flagship, The Elusive.

Download or read book The Powers of Music written by Ruth Katz and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this cultural history, Ruth Katz conceives of opera as a laboratory dedicated to exploration of the powers hidden in the interaction between words and music. Opera combines not only music and libretto, but the sensuality, acting out, and lyricism that characterize the popular culture of the Italians. The Powers of Music is thus a contribution to cultural studies, providing unique insight into the social meaning of opera in Italy. According to Katz, opera's origins in Renaissance Italy can be traced to numerous characteristics of life at that time. Among them are: the belief of the Humanists that the magical properties of music could be harnessed; the transition from polyphony to monody that gave musical expression to individualism; the melodramatic propensity of Italian culture reflected in its literary and theatrical arts; and the salons of Florentine aristocrats, scientists, and artists whose agenda included the challenge to rediscover how the ancient Greeks succeeded in heightening the rhetorical power of words by allying them with music. Katz discusses each of these factors in detail. In her new introduction, Katz reconsiders her original work by discussing three topics. The first has to do with the perception that there has been a major change in the academic climate for this kind of analysis. The second relates to her concern with the eighteenth-century expansion of the Florentine comparison of the attributes of the arts, from which music emerges as the purest of all, for being freest of external reference. Third, she reconsiders her initial impression that opera was on the wane. The Powers of Music is an intriguing study that will be of interest to sociologists, cultural historians, and scholars of communication and popular culture.
Book Synopsis The Death of God and the Meaning of Life by : Julian Young
Download or read book The Death of God and the Meaning of Life written by Julian Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of life? In today's secular, post-religious scientific world, this question has become a serious preoccupation. But it also has a long history: many major philosophers have thought deeply about it, as Julian Young so vividly illustrates in this thought-provoking second edition of The Death of God and the Meaning of Life. Three new chapters explore Søren Kierkegaard’s attempts to preserve a Christian answer to the question of the meaning of life, Karl Marx's attempt to translate this answer into naturalistic and atheistic terms, and Sigmund Freud’s deep pessimism about the possibility of any version of such an answer. Part 1 presents an historical overview of philosophers from Plato to Marx who have believed in a meaning of life, either in some supposed ‘other’ world or in the future of this world. Part 2 assesses what happened when the traditional structures that give life meaning began to erode. With nothing to take their place, these structures gave way to the threat of nihilism, to the appearance that life is meaningless. Young looks at the responses to this threat in chapters on Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, Camus, Foucault and Derrida. Fully revised and updated throughout, this highly engaging exploration of fundamental issues will captivate anyone who’s ever asked themselves where life’s meaning (if there is one) really lies. It also makes a perfect historical introduction to philosophy, particularly to the continental tradition.
